Fast chess (also known as speed chess) is a type of chess game in which each side is given less time to make their moves than under the normal tournament time controls of 60 to 180 minutes per player.
Background
FIDE divide time controls for chess into "classical" time controls, and the fast chess time controls. Currently, for master-level players (with an Elo of 2200 or higher) the regulations state that at least 120 minutes per player (based on a 60-move game) must be allocated for a game to be rated on the "classical" list. Games played faster than this may be rated under the time controls of rapid play and blitz.
More recently in November 2015, Oleg Skvortsov and Christian Issler on behalf of the Zurich Chess Club have petitioned FIDE to allow the rating of 40 minute games as classical chess (instead of the current Rapid classification), but there was no response.
Overview
Various names indicate more specifically the maximum duration of a fast chess game.

Hi, Coach Russ here with Chess NYC. A very common question that we receive as chess coaches is what is the quickest way to win a game of chess? Now, everybody's idea of the game of chess, that's it's a very long, strategic, thought out game, but surprisingly enough there is a way to win a game of chess in only two moves. Now, when we're looking at the two move checkmate or also known as the foolsmate, it's going to take a sequence of bad moves by the opponent to fall into this trap of only two moves.
Now interestingly enough the two move checkmate is going to occur on the black side checkmating white in two moves. So white is going to open up and play a move, F-4. As we can notice in this position by white moving their pawn to F-4 they've opened up their king's diagonal exposing the king and creating a weakness. Black can simply open up and make space for their queen and bishop and this is black's first move. White makes their second move further opening up the king's diagonal and allowing for black to make their second move which is to bring the queen along the diagonal to H-4 and checking the king.
Now in chess when we're in check we look for three ways to get out of check. It's either to move the king, to block the check or to capture the checking piece. In this position the king has no safe squares to move. There are no pieces that can interpose or block the queen from checking the king and there are actually no pieces that can capture the checking piece or capture the queen.
So what has just happened is black has checkmated white in two moves and just to once again show you, white opens up making the move to F-4 opening up the king's diagonal. Black plays the pawn up opening up the queen to make a direct threat on white's king. White plays G-4 and black responds by bringing the queen out and making a direct threat to white's king and leaving white with no option to run, block or capture and ending the game in only two moves.

Usually when it is the championship game, you often see players slightly tensed or nervous. But you can see how Magnus Carlsen plays each and every move in this game with great confidence against Hikaru Nakamura. He has a full point lead over the field and instead of him offering a draw, it was Nakamura who had to ask for the half point.
After becoming the World Rapid Champion we show you the after-moments of Carlsen's victory, a glimpse from the interview after becoming the champion and the presentation ceremony at the end!

On 1st of June Nihal Sarin crossed 2600 Elo on the FIDE rating list. He is currently the youngest chess player who is 2600+. His classical rating is now 2606. But what is even more impressive is Nihal's blitz rating. He is 2654 and India no.3 in blitz.
Is Nihal really that strong in blitz? Can he really be India no.3 ahead of some of the stalwarts of Indian chess like Harikrishna, Adhiban. Sethuraman, Ganguly, Sasikiran, Gupta etc.
Well, all your doubts would be put to rest once you see the quick eye of the youngster in this video where he fights it out with his trainer GM Srinath Narayanan in a couple of bullet games at the ChessBase HQ in Hamburg.
Let us know in the comments section below, as to what you think about Nihal's speed.

Magnus Carlsen, the world’s top-ranked chess player, withdrew from the World Rapid and BlitzChess Championships in New York after a dispute over his attire.
Meanwhile, he also received mentorship and training from the face of Indian chess, Anand... Gukesh and his team decided to skip the year-ending Rapid and Blitz Championship, and the Indian chess star will return to action next year.
Magnus Carlsen was fined $200 and disqualified from the World Rapid and BlitzChess Championship in New York after refusing to comply with FIDE's dress code ...Watch the video to know more. lifestyle news .
