Bird migration

Bird migration is the regular seasonal movement, often north and south along a flyway, between breeding and wintering grounds. Many species of bird migrate. Migration carries high costs in predation and mortality, including from hunting by humans, and is driven primarily by availability of food. It occurs mainly in the northern hemisphere, where birds are funnelled on to specific routes by natural barriers such as the Mediterranean Sea or the Caribbean Sea.

Historically, migration has been recorded as much as 3,000 years ago by Ancient Greek authors including Homer and Aristotle, and in the Book of Job, for species such as storks, turtle doves, and swallows. More recently, Johannes Leche began recording dates of arrivals of spring migrants in Finland in 1749, and scientific studies have used techniques including bird ringing and satellite tracking. Threats to migratory birds have grown with habitat destruction especially of stopover and wintering sites, as well as structures such as power lines and wind farms.

The Mission (band)

The Mission (known as The Mission UK in the United States) are a gothic rock band formed in 1986 by former members of The Sisters of Mercy.

Initially known as The Sisterhood, the band was started by frontman Wayne Hussey and bassist Craig Adams (both from the Sisters of Mercy), soon adding drummer Mick Brown (Red Lorry Yellow Lorry) and guitarist Simon Hinkler (Artery and Pulp). Aside from Hussey, the line-up has changed several times during the years and the band has been on hiatus twice.

The band's catalogue consists of nine main albums (God's Own Medicine, Children, Carved in Sand, Masque, Neverland, Blue, Aura, God is a Bullet and The Brightest Light) with several complementing albums, compilations and other miscellaneous releases also in existence.

History

Incarnation

After an aborted recording session with Andrew Eldritch in the summer of 1985, Wayne Hussey and Craig Adams left the Sisters of Mercy. Based in Leeds, the duo continued to work on various musical ideas and recorded them over the autumn. Dismissing the use of a drum-machine, Adams and Hussey asked Mick Brown (Red Lorry Yellow Lorry) to help out with the sessions. By the end of the year, he had joined the band on a permanent basis. With Hussey as both the frontman and principal songwriter, the trio required second guitarist to facilitate a live set-up. They eventually recruited Simon Hinkler (Artery) who also contributed keyboards and thus completed the four-piece. The name 'The Sisterhood' was chosen with a nod to past and rehearsals for the first shows started in January 1986. The new name quickly became a point of discussion in the English music-press, giving the four-piece significant amount of publicity. As 'The Sisterhood' the band made their live-debut on January 20, 1986 at the Alice in Wonderland, London.

Each year in spring, Israel witnesses a unique spectacle. Many millions of migrating birds cross the land bridge between Africa, Asia and Europe. Storks, flamingos, pelicans, raptors and songbirds fly north from their African wintering grounds up the Great Rift Valley. Their first major roosting place after the exhausting nonstop flight over the African deserts is in southern Israel – a vital stopover. Here they replenish their energy reserves. The high concentration of migrating birds in a very limited area provides an ideal opportunity for researchers. It’s an ornithologist’s hotspot. Yet the migration phenomenon still poses a mystery to scientists. Why do birds fly thousands of kilometres over continents? What is the origin of bird migration? By means of small backpack transmitters fitted to the birds, the researcher Ran Nathan tracks them in time and space as with a “black box”. This is possible thanks to highly sensitive GPS satellite telemetry. During the migrating season, the skies above Israel are crowded, and the flyways that birds have used for millions of years cross the flight paths of aircraft. Even the collision with a pelican can be dangerous for a plane. It is like a bullet. The ornithologist Yossi Leshem has come up with a solution. He has developed an effective early warning system which is indispensible for airports particularly in coastal regions, where the migrating birds are concentrated. Each year, at the end of March, the flocks of migrating birds are pursued by flocks of ornithologists from all over the world. Hundreds of birders flood into the port city of Eilat on the Red Sea to take part in the Migration Festival. For a week, Israel’s southernmost coastal resort is home to international scientists and amateur birders. They party, research and take photos. The Berlin-based photographer Thomas Krumenacker travels to Eilat each year in his quest for that ‘special’ picture. Bird-life is his passion. And he gives the phenomenon of bird migration a face.

Each year in spring, Israel witnesses a unique spectacle. Many millions of migrating birds cross the land bridge between Africa, Asia and Europe. Storks, flamingos, pelicans, raptors and songbirds fly north from their African wintering grounds up the Great Rift Valley. Their first major roosting place after the exhausting nonstop flight over the African deserts is in southern Israel – a vital stopover. Here they replenish their energy reserves. The high concentration of migrating birds in a very limited area provides an ideal opportunity for researchers. It’s an ornithologist’s hotspot. Yet the migration phenomenon still poses a mystery to scientists. Why do birds fly thousands of kilometres over continents? What is the origin of bird migration? By means of small backpack transmitters fitted to the birds, the researcher Ran Nathan tracks them in time and space as with a “black box”. This is possible thanks to highly sensitive GPS satellite telemetry. During the migrating season, the skies above Israel are crowded, and the flyways that birds have used for millions of years cross the flight paths of aircraft. Even the collision with a pelican can be dangerous for a plane. It is like a bullet. The ornithologist Yossi Leshem has come up with a solution. He has developed an effective early warning system which is indispensible for airports particularly in coastal regions, where the migrating birds are concentrated. Each year, at the end of March, the flocks of migrating birds are pursued by flocks of ornithologists from all over the world. Hundreds of birders flood into the port city of Eilat on the Red Sea to take part in the Migration Festival. For a week, Israel’s southernmost coastal resort is home to international scientists and amateur birders. They party, research and take photos. The Berlin-based photographer Thomas Krumenacker travels to Eilat each year in his quest for that ‘special’ picture. Bird-life is his passion. And he gives the phenomenon of bird migration a face.

So you set out with the clothes on your back, your innate knowledge of the world, and zip all else. No map. No smartphone. Nada. Would you be able to travel tens of thousands of miles, across oceans and continents? And then get back home a few months later? Because lots of birds do this every year. It’s called migration. And often these birds go to the exact same summer and winter spots, using nearly the exact same routes, every time. Ornithologists have speculated that birds might use a number of sights, sounds, smells, and learned social cues to get where they’re going. But young birds making their trip for the first time have been observed migrating successfully with no chaperones. What gives? Research has revealed that migratory birds have vision-based magnetoreception: They can see magnetic fields. And Earth is lousy with magnetic fields. Earth’s molten outer core is made up of iron alloys, which are swished around by heat coming up off of the solid inner core - and by the rotation of the Earth. That motion (plus the fact that iron is good at conducting electricity) creates a dynamo: A generator of electric and magnetic fields. Which basically? Makes Earth function like a giant magnet. North is positive, South is negative, and our planet is wrapped in slopes and curves of magnetic fields arcing between them. And migratory birds can sense those fields! Experiments over the past couple decades have shown that birds prepared to migrate south will align themselves with magnetic south – even if you create an artificial “south” in a lab. And furthermore: These birds see magnetic fields. Around 2010, researchers fit European robins with clear or frosted goggles, and found that the birds needed clear vision in their right eyes to navigate magnetically. Why not their left eye? No one knows. Scientists are now studying what biological mechanism might be responsible for this. The popular theory goes that magnetic fields cause a chemical reaction in birds’ eyes that affect their sensitivity to light. So magnetic fields might show up as brighter or darker patterns spread out over everything the bird sees. Like a map on a heads-up display. Bird migration

Bird migration is the regular seasonal movement, often north and south along a flyway, between breeding and wintering grounds. Many species of bird migrate. Migration carries high costs in predation and mortality, including from hunting by humans, and is driven primarily by availability of food. It occurs mainly in the northern hemisphere, where birds are funnelled on to specific routes by natural barriers such as the Mediterranean Sea or the Caribbean Sea.

Historically, migration has been recorded as much as 3,000 years ago by Ancient Greek authors including Homer and Aristotle, and in the Book of Job, for species such as storks, turtle doves, and swallows. More recently, Johannes Leche began recording dates of arrivals of spring migrants in Finland in 1749, and scientific studies have used techniques including bird ringing and satellite tracking. Threats to migratory birds have grown with habitat destruction especially of stopover and wintering sites, as well as structures such as power lines and wind farms.
