The Bingham Canyon Mine, more commonly known as Kennecott Copper Mine among locals, is an open-pit mining operation extracting a large porphyry copper deposit southwest of Salt Lake City, Utah, USA, in the Oquirrh Mountains. The mine is owned by Rio Tinto Group, an international mining and exploration company headquartered in the United Kingdom. The copper operations at Bingham Canyon Mine are managed through Kennecott Utah Copper Corporation which operates the mine, a concentrator plant, a smelter, and a refinery. The mine has been in production since 1906, and has resulted in the creation of a pit over 0.6 miles (0.97km) deep, 2.5 miles (4km) wide, and covering 1,900 acres (770ha). It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1966 under the name Bingham Canyon Open Pit Copper Mine. The mine experienced a massive landslide in April 2013 and a smaller slide in September 2013.
History
Minerals, in the form of copper ore, were first discovered in Bingham Canyon in 1848 by two brothers, Sanford and Thomas Bingham, sons of Erastus Bingham, Mormon pioneers of September 1847, who grazed their cattle there. They reported their find to their leader, Brigham Young, who advised against pursuing mining operations because the survival and establishment of settlements was of paramount importance at that time. The brothers applied themselves to that purpose as directed and did not stake a claim. In 1850, the Bingham family went to settle what is now Weber County, leaving the canyon still today known by their name.

Bingham Canyon Mine, The Largest Open-Pit Mines in the World
The Bingham Canyon Mine, also known as the Kennecott Copper Mine, is an open-pit mining operation extracting a large porphyry copper deposit southwest of Salt Lake City, Utah, USA, in the Oquirrh Mountains. The Bingham Canyon Mine is one of the largest open-pit mines in the world, measuring more than 4 kilometers or 2.5 miles wide and 1,200 meters or 3,900 feet deep. Since 1906, when the first steam shovels began removing waste rock from the sides of the mountain to reach the low-grade copper ore deposits, Bingham Canyon Mine has yielded more than 19 million tons of copper, 23 million ounces of gold, 190 million ounces of silver, plus other minerals. The value of the resources extracted from here is greater than the Comstock Lode, Klondike, and California gold rush mining regions combined!
Bingham Canyon discovered in 1848 by two brothers, Sanford and Thomas Bingham. Although they reported the find to their leader, Brigham Young advised against pursuing mining operations because the survival and establishment of Mormon settlements was of greater importance at that time. It was not until 1863 that extraction of low-grade porphyry copper ore began. These nineteenth-century mines, though, were relatively small. However, in 1903, Daniel Jackling and Enos Wall organized the Utah Copper Company and began construction of a pilot mill at Copperton, just beyond the mouth of the canyon. Serious mining efforts got underway in 1906. The Kennecott Copper Corporation that operated mines in Kennecott, Alaska, acquired the company in 1936. this mine, which is on the National Register of Historic Sites, is just one of the two man-made objects on earth that can be seen by astronauts from outer space. The other is the Great Wall Of China.
On April 10, 2013, Bingham Canyon also produced the largest, non-volcanic landslide in the history of North America when 65–70 million cubic meters of dirt and rock thundered down the side of the pit. The event was large enough that seismic networks designed to record earthquakes detected the rumble of sliding debris.
Today, the mine is owned by Rio Tinto Group, an international mining and exploration company headquartered in the United Kingdom. The copper operations at Bingham Canyon Mine are managed through Kennecott Utah Copper Corporation (KUCC) which operates the mine, a concentrator plant, a smelter, and a refinery. As of 2010, KUCC is the second largest copper producer in the United States and meets about 13-18% percent of the country’s needs for copper.
A big tire from one of the mine's 190-ton capacity dump trucks that serves as a photo op, and a tape loop that spouts facts 'n figures about the mighty hole in English, Spanish, German, and Japanese. "The Bingham Canyon Mine produces a quarter-millions tons of copper annually," it announces. "The mine has been dubbed, 'The Richest Hole on Earth'."

The Visitor center reopens in the spring of 2019, just in time for the visit by the "Big Boy" the worlds bigger steam locomotive on May 10! The visitor center was opened in the late fall of 2018 for a few days to test the format, check safety and let the staff meet the public. AND we were invited!! AND so are you.
The new visitor center is located in the pit, right next to the massive slide - cave-in that closed the mine so that visitors can also see what ended up being the largest ever man made landslide, well over a mile long and over 3000 feet high!!! The mine has also now passed the 4000 feet deep mark, not just the worlds largest man made excavation, but by far the worlds largest man made hole!
The new rules at the mine bar all private vehicles from the property. ALL personal car and trucks are parked in lots, the main mine lot at the site of the old town of Lark. Karyn's mom grew up in Lark, a town that no longer exists, berried under a thousand feet of mine debris.
The visitors will be transported to the visitor center in a fleet of 10 shuttle buses. The new gift shop is located at the Lark Gate and so you can visit it without taking the tour of the mine.

Other top-ranked counties include Madison, which grew 32.8% to $58,000; Idaho, 28.1% to $60,975; Gem, 26.6% to $66,000; and Bingham, 23.1% to $77,000. How are incomes shifting in Ada, Canyon counties?.
Mr Black had told Ray Bingham, Imagination’s chairman and the head of CanyonBridge, that the board appointments would face national security scrutiny from the government and that allowing it would be in breach of directors’ legal duties.
