Bad blood is spilling over in Lincoln County: William Bonney has sworn revenge against the men who murdered his boss. Filmmaker King Vidor brought the bigger-than-life legend of Bonney -- Billy the Kid -- to the screen in a big way, using a rare widescreen process (unfortunately, wide prints are no longer known to exist) and filming some of the action in New Mexico locales known to the outlaw. John Mack Brown portrays the Kid, single-mindedly pursuing his vow of payback and eluding death several times (including a gun-blazing escape from a hacienda inferno). Would the Kid also elude Sheriff Pat Garrett (Wallace Beery)? The film's denouement undoubtedly delighted some moviegoers and riled others. The saddles and sidearms of a cow...

Playing the title character in "The Law vs. Billy the Kid" is Scott Brady, veteran of c. 150 films, although more noteworthy is Director William Castle, famous for the outrageous gimmicks he employed to promote dozens of his cheaply made B-movies. His telling of the ...

The saddles and sidearms of a cowboy's stock-in-trade would serve Brown, then a newcomer to the Western genre, for years to come. From the mid-1930s into the 1950s, he was a mainstay of Western B-films and serials.

These are brief excerpts from one of 23 films and television series ostensibly about Billy the Kid. Below the analysis of this source are links to clips from and a bit of analysis of other dramas about the outlaw/hero. Less important than any facts or legends that may be found or debunked in these sources is the suggestion that our views of Billy have evolved through the years and that these media may tell us as much or more about the eras in which they were produced than about the historical characters and times portrayed.
The first film purported to be about the historical Billy the Kid combines many of the myths that had come to surround the title character with enough facts to make a careful viewing of the film instructive. A more valuable insight, however, may be in recognizing how the Great Depression then underway may have influenced filmmakers' script and staging choices and audiences' reactions to the film. Scenes of actor Johnny Mack Brown as Billy singing, dancing, and playing the piano might seem a heavy-handed effort to lift Americans' spirits amid the financial panic of 1930. The scene in which Billy saves and is befriended by an Englishman turned local cattle rancher named "Tunston", in whom Billy instantly finds a father figure, is based on the real Billy's loyalty to his employer, England-born John Tunstall, whose murder seems to have been pivotal in transforming Billy into a revenge-obsessed paladin against those responsible. The film's Billy's growing feelings for the deceased Tunston's fiancee Clare is fictional, but there are historical suggestions that bi-lingual Billy was catnip to women, especially those in Mexican American settlements where he often took refuge when on the run. The film's assertion that "every killing [Billy had] done [had] been needed" and that he had made the community "a decent place to live in" is laughable, but the happy ending, featuring lawman Pat Garrett deliberately allowing Billy and Clare to escape across the border, is understandable in the context of the times.

This is the first of about two dozen films in a 1940-43 "Billy the Kid" film series, the first six starring Bob Steele, the rest featuring Buster Crabbe as the Kid. This works out to one every other month, so no one should expect high production values or deep story lines. This one is all too typical, with few revealing insights into the real Billy. He fights on behalf of the federal government's efforts to bring peace to the New Mexico frontier, perhaps reflecting Americans' accelerating awareness of the need for preparedness for the war already underway in Europe, but Billy remains outside the law and must move on in the film's finale. Of course, to keep the series going, he can't be finished off by Pat Garrett or even ride off into the sunset with "Molly", Billy's love interest in this entry. Like the 22 films that followed, "Billy the Kid Outlawed" qualifies as an "oater" or "horse opera", the cheaply made Westerns that Hollywood produced by the hundreds in that era. There's not even any singing, so avoid this one.

Playing the title character in "The Law vs. Billy the Kid" is Scott Brady, veteran of c. 150 films, although more noteworthy is Director William Castle, famous for the outrageous gimmicks he employed to promote dozens of his cheaply made B-movies. His telling of the Billy the Kid story is more restrained than his more famous fright-fest films, and he actually offered a few insights into the sources of Billy's fury, including the murders of both his real and substitute fathers. Also introduced is New Mexico Territorial Governor Lew Wallace, former Union General and author of the novel "Ben Hur: A Tale of the Christ". Sheriff Pat Garrett's dilemma in tracking down and killing his friend-nemesis Billy is fairly accurately conveyed, but an unconvincing romance between rough-born and -raised Billy and a seemingly sophisticated young woman undercuts any insightful aspects of this version of the story. The film displays director Castle's usual slap-dash touch but without the amusing excesses he exhibited in so many of his "thrillers", which you can learn about in another surreal filmmaker John Waters' 2007 tribute, "Spine Tingler: The William Castle Story". Watching Waters' film rather than Castle's would be be a far more satisfying way to pass an hour and a half.
