A non-navigable river, the Besós was nonetheless a link between the Catalan coast and the interior. In the 10th century, the Rec Comtal was built to use the river for irrigation.
As it passes through a highly industrialized area (Barcelona metropolitan region), it had the dubious honor of being the most contaminated river in Europe during the 1970s and 1980s. Since the mid-1990s, however, the river has been in the process of recovery. The Fòrum Universal de les Cultures, which took place in Barcelona during 2004, allowed the creation of a recreation area called Parc Fluvial del Besòs between the cities of Barcelona, Santa Coloma de Gramenet and Sant Adrià del Besòs.

Sant Andreu district is the gateway to one of the city’s newest parks: the Besòs riverbed. The lower section of the river covers an area of 115 hectares stretching from Montcada i Reixac to Sant Adrià de Besòs, where it flows into the sea. Today, this area has been regenerated and converted into the Besòs River Park, where visitors can enjoy the natural surroundings

Another of the new plans is to divert wastewater from the Besòs river to the Llobregat to be treated while the Besòs water treatment plants are not moving forward ... to treat the Besòs wastewater.
A toxic leak to the Besòs river recorded after a fire in an industrial chemical state in Polinyà, outside of Barcelona, has caused the death of over 1,000 fish in the same river ...Liquid manure in Abella river.
The factory is located between the cities of Sant Adrià de Besòs and Badalona, next to the Besòs river, north of Barcelona... "On this side of the Besòs river, we have been waiting a long time to be part of Catalonia's driving power," he said.
