Bedford High School was established in 1976 when the town's grammar schools were abolished by the 1976 Education Act. It was formed by merging Leigh Boys´ Grammar School and neighbouring Manchester Road Secondary Modern School. The former grammar school buildings now form the upper school and the secondary modern buildings form the lower school. In 2003 the school gained specialist Business and Enterprise College status and opened a construction training facility in conjunction with the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB).
Performance
In 2008, 37% of pupils achieved five GCSE passes at grade A* to C including Mathematics and English, while 75% achieved five A* to C grades overall. These results were a significant improvement over 2007, when 29% of pupils achieved five GCSE passes at grade A* to C including Mathematics and English,
The school's Ofsted inspection in September 2004 stated that GCSE results were above that of similar schools.
The same Ofsted report rated the school as satisfactory with effective leadership and praised the school's relationship with the local community. It also highlighted issues with year 9 performance, the provision of modern languages and personal development, and the attitudes and behaviour of a number of boys in the school.
In 2011, the graduation rate was 5%. In 2010, the Pennsylvania Department of Education issued a new, 4 year cohort graduation rate. Bedford Area High School's rate was 50% for 2010.

Academics
In 2011, Bedford Senior High School improved to achieving AYP status. In 2010 the school is in Warning status for AYP due to a 23% decline in Reading on grade level, among low family income students.
2011 - 69% on grade level, (19% below basic). State - 69.1% of 11th graders are on grade level.
Bedford High School is neighbors with St. Peter Chanel High School. With both schools winning championships in sports, The City of Bedford renamed a portion of Northfield Road, the Avenue of Champions. Both schools were under construction at the same time in the 1950s.
Bedford High School was erected in 1955-57, it is built in Norman Brick-style architecture with limestone. When Bedford High opened it cost $2.1 million, during this time neighboring St. Peter Chanel was being built. In the 1950s, Northfield Road was called construction road due to these high schools being built. In 1957, new Bedford High Opened at the same time as its neighbor. In 1961, the Bedford Board of Education Building 475 Northfield Road was built on the campus. In the 1970-72 school years Bedford added two wings which are connected by two glass enclosed walkways.
Bedford High School is a public high school located in Bedford It is one of two High Schools in Taylor County. A majority of the student population comes from the towns of Bedford, Blockton, Gravity, Conway, and New Market while some students open enroll from neighboring districts in the area. The school's enrollment is approximately 160 students (9–12) and is administered by the Bedford Community School District. Its official mascot is the Bulldog, and its official colors are Navy and White.
Academics
Bedford offers a wide variety of courses for students to choose from. They also allow students to take college courses through Iowa Western Community College in Clarinda, Iowa. Many students choose to further their educations at various colleges in the United States, while some students choose to enter military service, or the workforce following graduation. Currently, 26.66 credits (plus 1 credit of Physical Education)are required for a student to receive their diploma at graduation.
Bedford was founded at a ford on the River Great Ouse, and is thought to have been the burial place of Offa of Mercia. Bedford Castle was built by Henry I, although it was destroyed in 1224. Bedford was granted borough status in 1165 and has been represented in Parliament since 1265. Bedford is included in the Bedford parliamentary constituency, which includes Kempston and is represented by Richard Fuller. Bedford is well known for its large population of Italian descent. It also has an increasingly large south Asian population, especially Punjabis, and is home to the largest SikhGurdwara in the UK outside London.
Bedford Depot is a historic railroad depot at 80 Loomis Street and 120 South Road in Bedford, Massachusetts. Bedford was the junction of the Reformatory Branch and the Lexington Branch of the Boston and Maine Railroad; it saw passenger service until 1977 as the stub of the Lexington Branch. The original 1874 depot and 1877 freight house are listed on the National Register of Historic Places; along with a restored Budd Rail Diesel Car, they form the centerpieces of the Bedford Depot Park.
History
Early service
The Lexington and West Cambridge Railroad was built to what is now Lexington Center in 1845-46, and bought by the Boston and Lowell Railroad in 1870 in order to prevent the line from building an alternate route to Lowell via Bedford. In August 1873, the subsidiary Middlesex Central Railroad opened an extension to Concord Center via Bedford. A Victorian-style passenger station was built in 1874.
In 1877, the Billerica and Bedford Railroad, a 2ft (610mm) narrow-gauge line, opened from Bedford Depot to North Billerica. The line built a two-stall engine house and a turntable at the Bedford terminus. The Billerica and Bedford was markedly unsuccessful, and closed down in 1878. In 1879, the Middlesex Central was extended to Reformatory station in Concord; this permitted short-lived through service to Nashua via a connection to the Nashua, Acton, and Boston Railroad. In 1885, the Boston & Lowell rebuilt the route to Billerica as part of their standard gauge network. The depot, originally west of South Road, was moved to its present location at the junction. The narrow gauge engine house was also moved and turned into a freight depot. Two years later, the Boston and Maine Railroad absorbed the Boston & Lowell, including the two routes through Bedford.
