Bats are mammals of the orderChiroptera (/kaɪˈrɒptərə/; from the Greek χείρ - cheir, "hand" and πτερόν - pteron, "wing") whose forelimbs form webbed wings, making them the only mammals naturally capable of true and sustained flight. By contrast, other mammals said to fly, such as flying squirrels, gliding possums, and colugos, can only glide for short distances. Bats do not flap their entire forelimbs, as birds do, but instead flap their spread-out digits, which are very long and covered with a thin membrane or patagium.
Bats are the second largest order of mammals (after the rodents), representing about 20% of all classified mammal species worldwide, with about 1,240 bat species divided into two suborders: the less specialized and largely fruit-eating megabats, or flying foxes, and the highly specialized and echolocatingmicrobats. About 70% of bat species are insectivores. Most of the rest are frugivores, or fruit eaters. A few species, such as the fish-eating bat, feed from animals other than insects, with the vampire bats being hematophagous, or feeding on blood.
Bats (also Batsi, Batsbi, Batsb, Batsaw, Tsova-Tush) is the language of the Bats people, a Caucasian minority group, and is part of the Nakh family of Caucasian languages. It had 2,500 to 3,000 speakers in 1975.
There is only one dialect. It exists only as a spoken language, as the Bats people use Georgian as their written language. The language is not mutually intelligible with either Chechen or Ingush, the other two members of the Nakh family.
History
Until the middle of the 19th century, the Tsovians lived in Tushetia, the mountain region of Northeast Georgia. They were expected to have come settled with Tush people in mid centuries later became assimilated with other Tush people and now are known as one of four tush subgroups. The Tsova Gorge in Tushetia was inhabited by four Bats communities: the Sagirta, Otelta, Mozarta and Indurta. Later they settled on the Kakhetia Plain, in the village of Zemo-Alvani, where they still live. Administratively they are part of the Akhmeta district of Georgia.
Human echolocation is the ability of humans to detect objects in their environment by sensing echoes from those objects, by actively creating sounds – for example, by tapping their canes, lightly stomping their foot, snapping their fingers, or making clicking noises with their mouths – people trained to orient by echolocation can interpret the sound waves reflected by nearby objects, accurately identifying their location and size. This ability is used by some blind people for acoustic wayfinding, or navigating within their environment using auditory rather than visual cues. It is similar in principle to active sonar and to animal echolocation, which is employed by bats, dolphins and toothed whales to find prey.
Background
Human echolocation has been known and formally studied since at least the 1950s. In earlier times, human echolocation was sometimes described as "facial vision". The field of human and animal echolocation was surveyed in book form as early as 1959. See also White, et al., (1970)
Echolocation, also called bio sonar, is the biological sonar used by several kinds of animals
Echolocating animals emit calls out to the environment and listen to the echoes of those calls that return from various objects near them. They use these echoes to locate and identify the objects. Echolocation is used for navigation and for foraging (or hunting) in various environments. Some blind humans have learned to find their way using clicks produced by a device or by mouth.
Echolocating animals include some mammals and a few birds; most notably microchiropteranbats and odontocetes (toothed whales and dolphins), but also in simpler form in other groups such as shrews, one genus of megachiropteran bats (Rousettus) and two cave dwelling bird groups, the so-called cave swiftlets in the genus Aerodramus (formerly Collocalia) and the unrelated OilbirdSteatornis caripensis.
Early research
The term echolocation was coined by Donald Griffin, whose work with Robert Galambos was the first to conclusively demonstrate its existence in bats in 1938.
As Griffin described in his book, the 18th century Italian scientist Lazzaro Spallanzani had, by means of a series of elaborate experiments, concluded that bats navigate by hearing and not by vision. In 1912, Sir Hiram Maxim had independently proposed that bats used sound below the human auditory range to avoid obstacles. In 1920, the English physiologist Hartridge proposed instead that bats used frequencies above the range of human hearing, which ultimately proved to be the case

It’s getting late, close to half past eight
when Mum suddenly screamed. „Ahhhh!“
Flying in the garden, over the tomatoes
What creature has she seen? „Hihihi! Huhu!“
What’s it doing here - with its pointy ears?
Can you hear it cheep? „Piepspieps“
Emma’s happy: „He is there!“ Her furry friend up in the air!

Ronan's a tiny bat who just wants to fly like his older friends. But he's still just a baby! He's great at hanging upside down, but before he can try flying, he'll have to get much bigger. He'll have to practice flapping his wings, eating on his own so he can get really strong, and pickup up tips from the other bats in the colony!

Bobby the cheeky Bat – flies by night - and catches insects
Bobby the cheeky Bat – why can’t you be my pet!
Dad is in the park, but emerging from the dark.
What flew past his face? „Ohh, ahhh!“
Barky gets excited, what creature’s swooping by him?
He can’t help but chase
Granny gets a shock, she’s throwing some old socks.
The bathroom’s her hiding place. „Help!“
But Henry really loves that guy, “Bobby! My friend, - up in the sky!”
Bobby the cheeky Bat – flies by night - and catches insects
Bobby the cheeky Bat – why can’t you be my pet!
Bobby is so dear! Be thankful he is here.
No mosquitos anywhere!
Henry’s feeling bad, not telling mum n dad,
It’s in his closet – and sleeps in there.
Bobbys upside down, and doesn't make a sound,
Till Mister Moon comes around: “Wake up, Bobby!”
Bobby the cheeky Bat – flies by night - and catches insects
Bobby the cheeky Bat – why can’t you be my pet!
