Royalty To Working Class: The British Social Class System, Explained
Social class - that enigmatic, all-encompassing, and life-altering term that - for better or worse - has been synonymous with the history of the United Kingdom for close to 1,000 years.
Indeed, the British class system holds particular global notoriety - with the notions of monarchy, landed gentry, and the working class continuing to define the contours of Britain's society to this very day.

"Traditional Chinese Clothing: Symbols and Social Class"💖👌 #shorts #viralshorts
Women wore long tunics which went to their ankles with a tie around their waists; men's tunics were shorter, only to their knees, and sometimes they wore pants with cloth boots or sandals. In the colder seasons, they would wear a thick jacket made of hemp, which was padded for additional warmth. Chinese women would sew an image of a tiger onto the clothing of their children as a sign of protection. The tiger was thought to be the king of the beasts and its image would ward off evil. Sometimes mothers sewed images of toads or snakes onto clothing along with the tiger to add more protection against danger.
This practice spread to the upper classes where dragons and tigers were embroidered on silk gowns for the same purpose. In the Sui Dynasty (589-618 CE), the emperor decreed that there was...

In the United States, the concept of “social class” diverges significantly from the hereditary aristocracy of Europe, which has long been defined by genetic lineage and centuries-old family fortunes.
America, in its original experiment with meritocracy, created a social hierarchy that lacks the clear-cut divisions of “nobility” versus “commoners,” resulting in a more subtle and complex class system.
This system, while often denied, is very much present and perceptible to those navigating it, manifesting in a hierarchy that evolves even in the 21st century.
In 1983, cultural historian Paul Fussell provided a bold analysis of American social classes, identifying unspoken behaviors and indicators of class status, a framework we revisit today with modern updates.
We begin our exploration at the top of the social ladder with the “Top Out-of-Sight” class, which Fussell described as possessing immense wealth and power, yet remaining largely invisible to the public eye.
This class includes families with vast fortunes accumulated over generations, such as the Mellons and Cargill-MacMillans, who exert significant influence without seeking public attention.
Descending from this elusive tier, we find the “Upper Class,” who, despite their prominence and influence, do not maintain the same degree of privacy, including well-known families like the Kennedys and Roosevelts.
Below them, the “Tech Elite” represents a new dimension in social stratification, composed of influential figures from the technology sector whose wealth and visibility challenge traditional class boundaries.
The “Upper Middle Class” is characterized by educational attainment and professional success rather than inherited wealth, often residing in prestigious neighborhoods and holding influential positions.
This group is followed by the “Middle Class,” whose members embody the pursuit of stability and modest success through hard work, evident in characters like Phil Dunphy and Leslie Knope.
The “High Proletarian” class consists of skilled workers whose trades are vital yet often undervalued, exemplified by figures like Tim Taylor and Mike Rowe.
Below them, the “Mid-Proletarian” class includes semi-skilled and unskilled laborers who perform essential roles while facing job insecurity and limited upward mobility, as illustrated by characters in “Hillbilly Elegy” and “Fargo.”
The “Low Proletarian” class struggles with chronic unemployment or low-wage work, their hardships captured in films like “Winter’s Bone” and “8 Mile.”
At the very bottom, the “Destitute” endure extreme poverty, battling for basic needs with minimal support, a plight portrayed in “Precious.”
Finally, the “Bottom Out-of-Sight” class remains almost entirely invisible to society, dealing with severe hardships and marginalization, often featured in the YouTube channel Soft White Underbelly.

"Welcome to 'Royalty To Working Class: The British Social Class System Explained,' a comprehensive deep dive into the multifaceted world of the British social class system. From the pomp and tradition of British royalty to the ever-evolving working class, this video unfolds the rich tapestry of the United Kingdom's societal hierarchy. 🇬🇧
We begin with a historical overview of British old money, tracing the lineage of aristocrats and discovering the persistence of noble roots that have shaped the nation's class landscape. As we journey through the British social class, we explore various facets, including the distinct accents that offer insights into one's class standing, with examples ranging from London's 'glottal stop' to the Received Pronunciation (RP) favored by upper-middle-class individuals.
Next, we delve into the 21st-century U.K. social structure, unraveling the layers from the Royals, Aristocracy, Upper-Middle Class to the Middle, Lower Middle, Working Classes, and the Underclass. Learn about King George V's name change to Windsor amid World War I, the charitable ethos of King Charles The Third, and the aristocracy's hold on 20% of the nation's land.
The dynamics of the upper-middle class's economic vitality and the growth of the lower-middle class spurred by industrialization are examined. We further discuss the working classes' evolution, from traditional industries like coal mining to their current engagement in various fields.
Immigration's profound impact on the United Kingdom is also highlighted. We touch upon the historical migration from Ireland and its cultural legacy, represented by figures like The Beatles, and the significant influx of immigrants from Asia, Africa, and the Middle East, reshaping Britain's class structure.
Whether you're curious about the subtle nuances of British accents or the royal family's commitment to public service, this video is an enlightening exploration of a system deeply ingrained in British culture. Join us as we navigate the remarkable complexity of the British social class, from royalty to the working class, reflecting shifts in wealth, cultural values, political dynamics, and professional roles.

In the Sui Dynasty (589-618 CE), the emperor decreed that there was too much similarity between what the peasants and the upper classes wore (even though the wealthy nobles were still the only ones who could wear silk) and passed a law that all peasants had to wear either blue or black clothing; only the wealthy were allowed to wear colors. suggest titles

4716 cab tour Eskbank NSW. Wed 08th Apr 2020
The 47 class only came to exist due to A. E. Goodwin ALCO at Auburn NSW going into receivership due to financial woes. The NSWGR wanted another 20 of the reliable 48 class (48166-48186) but Goodwins declined the order. Clyde Engineering was flat out with other orders and thus Goninan's were awarded the contract for 20 branch line locomotives.
The A Goninan & Co built 47 class units were built in the period 1972-73 for the then Public Transport Commission of NSW at their Newcastle plant, and weighing it at around 85 tons, were to serve the branch lines of the Newcastle NSW colliery's, namely Redhead, Lambton and Belmont etc in that period.
They were well received by train crews and renown for low cab noise, plenty of cab room and good riding under speed, however, they were plagued with...

A return of a NSW SRA Electric Locomotive - 8606
Thanks For Watching! Enjoy!
Here is some information about the 86 class:
With the extension of electrification from Gosford to Newcastle (opened June 1984) and to Port Kembla (from December 1985), additional electric locomotives were required to service these new routes and add to the existing fleet of aging 46 class and newer 85 class electrics. The Commonwealth Engineering Company of Granville was again successful in winning the tender for 50 locomotives using Mitsubishi electrical equipment from Japan. They had previously built the 85 class, which were first introduced in May 1979. The 86 class electric locomotives were a further development from these, with an electrical design similar but not identical to that of the previous class. Compared to the 46 class, the 86 class had roomier...

NR32 & NR85 North Borambil NSW. Wed 21st June 2023
Running near to time NR32 & NR85 pass through North Borambil NSW at a leisurely pace with Pacific National's steel train service 3YN2 from Whyalla SA to Newcastle NSW. Being the Wednesday service, this train will have an additional locomotive or two added at Goobang Junction NSW for the forward journey across the Blue Mountains, via Lithgow NSW.
North Borambil opened on the 08th of March 1902 with a siding on the Down Main side, opposite roughly from where the video was recorded. The wide open cleared area indicates that this was the siding area. There was also reports that a small passenger platform also existed here (where the video was recorded on Up Main side) at one time although not confirmed.

8011 cab tour Goobang Jnc East NSW. Tue 06th Sep 2002
Cab layout of the 80 class resembles that of the former 442 class, the 80 class features a fully airconditioned cab plus a gas powered refridgerator the only real differences plus, a slightly different control stand layout. 8011 was delivered new on the 22nd of May 1979.
Since new there have been some modern adjustments made, gone is the ceiling cord horn pull cord, replaced with a town & country toggle. The co-driver has a writing desk and an AM/FM CD player has been added for crew entertainment. The old fashioned Hasler-Bern speedo and data logger however, still remains. The fridge has been upgraded to an electric powered version.
The 80 class marked the end of an era as the last ALCO locomotives built in Australia, 50 were built by Comeng (who took over the ALCO licence from the f...

They were well received by train crews and renown for low cab noise, plenty of cab room and good riding under speed, however, they were plagued with over heating problems in summer months and also electrical problems. One unit caught fire in 1974 and was so badly damaged it was written off.
They also seen service out west at Bathurst during their tenure but were normally based at Broadmeadow loco. They were only the second batch of Caterpillar powered loco's purchased with the other being the 50 units of the diesel hydraulic 73 class built by Walkers in QLD.
The 47 class are powered by a Caterpillar four stroke 16 cylinder 16-D399TA engine giving 1,000hp and are renown for their "pleasant" idle. They were gradually taken out of service in 1989 and many were scrapped or sold off to private operators. Lachlan Valley Railway at Cowra purchased some with 4701 & 4702 still is use today, mainly on the AK inspection cars.
4716 is also owned by LVR and is seen in this video as the Eskbank Yard shunting engine at Lithgow NSW. 4715 & 4719 were converted to HTV2000 heavy test vehicle with their cabs being used at each end of HTV2000, it was based at Clyde Yard in western Sydney. 4705 is mounted on public display in a small park near Werris Creek railway station reflecting the towns railway history.
Red and white R&H Transport liveried 4717 sits in a storage paddock at the CFCLA compound in Goulburn NSW. 1030hrs Wednesday the 08th of April 2020.

Compared to the 46 class, the 86 class had roomier cabs, modern amenities and were better riding for the crew, but their traction control system was less direct and slower to respond to the driver's commands.
The class leader 8601 was delivered in February 1983 and the penultimate member of the class, 8649, was delivered during late August 1985. However, the last of the class, 8650, was not delivered until January 1986 and underwent its trial trip on 6 January that year. 8650 was an experimental departure from the NSW norm in featuring the Bo-Bo-Bo ("tri-Bo") wheel arrangement. It was built as a prototype for the electric locomotive design Commonwealth Engineering planned to construct for Queensland Railways, having also successfully tendered for these locos.

Although North Borambil was listed as closed in 1940 (some locals say 1948), according to the NSWR published SWTT, it was still open as far as 1951 and was a timetabled school children pick up and set down point.
The siding may have been for local farmers (or more than likely the Borambil sheep station) to convey their produce to markets, common along the main western line. No trace remains today of the siding, except for lots of old broken beer bottle glass indicating the siding labourers and farm hands must have had a "merry" old time.
It was reported in June 1901 that the late Queen Elizabeth II's father H. M. King George, then the Duke of York was picked up from Derriwong railway station and taken to "Borambil Estate" for some game shooting and afternoon "high tea" at the "Borambil Homestead". In 1905 Borambil Estate was running 26,117 sheep and 10,881 lambs at the time on around 47,000 acres.
Ironically, the Mayor of Condobolin requested that the royal train stop at Condobolin but the request was denied, so it was Derriwong and North Borambil that scored the royal visit. Mrs Morton and Mrs Munro of Derriwong, scored a tour of the royal carriage at Derriwong. It was said that the Duke remarked "It is the most superior I have ever travelled in."
Borambil is aboriginal for the "projecting root of a tree", the property on the other side of the main line is called "Borambil North" and maybe has a connection with the railway or vice versa. The area is renown for grain crops and sheep farming.
The NR class were built especially for high speed point to point express train running with the first 60 (NR1-NR60) built by Goninan's at Newcastle NSW and the other 60 (NR61-NR120) built between 1996 & 1998.
The class were built in Australia under licence from General Electric of the USA with the majority of the main parts shipped to Australia from the USA for assembly. Powered by a four stroke turbo charged GE 7FDL-16 prime mover delivering 4,020hp, published track speed is 115KMh.
To conserve fuel the NR class feature a three setting power position which is set in relation to the total tonnage to be hauled at the time. Settings are 2,850hp, 3,560hp or full power, at 4,020hp. Fuel capacity is 13,500 litres and the loco weighs 132 tonnes.
NR32 was built at Newcastle NSW and delivered new on the 19th of June 1997 whilst NR85 was built at Bassendean WA and handed over new on the 25th of May 1997.
Many said the GE powered NR class wouldn't last in a railway dominated mostly by EMD, ALCO and EE at the time. However, the critics were proved wrong with the NR class covering millions of kilometres since their inception and still going strong today. Pacific National started overhauls of the class back in February 2002 ensuring another 10 to 15 years of life for them.
All of the class remain in operation today, except for NR33 which was scrapped after being badly damaged in a level crossing accident on the 25th of May 2006 at Lismore VIC. NR32 was deemed "beyond repair" at the time and subsequently scrapped.
Did you know? The Royal Carriage that conveyed the Duke of York to Derriwong NSW in June 1901 has been preserved over the years and is now on public display at the "Powerhouse Museum" in Sydney NSW.

The 80 class marked the end of an era as the last ALCO locomotives built in Australia, 50 were built by Comeng (who took over the ALCO licence from the failed A. E. Goodwin ALCO company) at Granville NSW for the then Public Transport Commission of NSW in 1978 and 1983. The first order, placed in 1978, was for 30 units and then, in 1983 another order was placed for a further 20.
Designated ALCO model CE615A they were more or less an "upgraded" version of the much respected and well liked ALCO DL500G model 442 class. Powered by a four stroke V12 turbo charged ALCO 12-251CE prime mover delivering 2,000hp. Track speed published is 130KMh.
The prime mover of the 80 class is identical to that of the 442 class which is an ALCO 12-251C, also delivering 2,000hp, there is very little difference between the two statistically and operating wise.
The 80 class were the first locomotives to have air conditioning fitted as a standard inclusion, they also had high grade fiberglass exterior panels which reduced the need for regular painting. The first 30 were delivered in the standard tuscan/indian red livery and the latter 20 had an upgraded version with reverse colours on the front, for improved visibility.
Unlike their older "brother" the 442 class, the 80 class were not a popular locomotive and were renown for fuel and oil leaks and constant failures in traffic. They earned the wrath of Australian National crews in South Australian when the class was introduced to "through running" from Broken Hill NSW to SA from 1990 to May 1991.
Issues with the locomotive also lead to union bans in South Australia on the 80 class and they were sent packing back to NSW after a short stay. The issue of diesel fumes entering the cabs, from poorly sealed engine room doors, was another issue that haunted the class from time to time
With the formation of National Rail Corporation the entire 80 class fleet was sent to National Rail "on loan" pending the delivery of the NR class. The 80 class struggled with the fast world of high speed express freight running and were "not up to standard" by National Rail crews who relegated the 80 class to trailing units only.
During 1997 the class were progressively taken out of service and placed in storage or relegated to "Yard Shunter" status in Sydney metropolitan goods yards and the occasional metropolitan trip train working. The 80 class cabs were also adapted by Comeng for the 85 class electric locomotives, of which only 10 were built.
In their early years the majority of the class, being air conditioned, were allocated to western NSW, renown for its summer heat, and were mostly based in Lithgow, Parkes and Broken Hill.
The class were regulars hauling the Indian Pacific and numerous western freight duties. They also seen regular use on Hunter Valley, Baal Bone, Charbon, Wallerawang and Tahmoor coal plus the Kandos cement train services during their career. The class also hauled the Spirit of Progress passenger train, leading in the NSW sector, from time to time.
Few of the 80 class remain in active service today, Pacific National scrapped a large number of them, and others were left at Werris Creek in a derelict state, partially stripped of parts.
Southern Shorthaul Railroad has one in active service as does Qube Logistics. 8006 is aside for preservation by the Goodwin ALCO Group, 8026 is owned by SCT and said to be operational.
Despite some shortcomings the 80 class have a loyal following of rail enthusiasts. To date, none have been reported to be placed in preservation, hopefully, in the future, at least one will be preserved as operational.
Did you know? The bogie sets for the 80 class, were built by Bradken for Comeng. Bradken Kendall was and engineering company formed by Leslie Bradford and Jim Kendall in March 1922 at Alexandria NSW and by 1926 were making couplings and under carriage for railway locomotives and wagons.
In 1974 the name was changed to Bradken Consolidated Limited and in 1980 the company was purchased by Australian National Industries (ANI). Bradkens was moved to Newcastle in 1990 and in 2007 a factory was established in Xuzhou, China. The company was taken over by Hitachi in 2017.
