Highlights: Kinyan Mesechta 2023 - Bell Works Transformed Into Bais Medrash
On Sunday January 8 2023, the soaring atrium in the Bell Works building was transformed into a singular bustling makom Torah. In a specially constructed beis medrash, a booming kol Torah burst forth, as hundreds of lomdim from around the world and from all walks of life joyously learned Torah. Their Torah, let’s call it, as this was the Kinyan Hamasechta Worldwide event celebrating 1,500 chavrei, Kinyan Hamasechta and their families.
For that is the premise of the hundreds of Kinyan Hamasechta global chaburos. Every yid has his cheilek of Torah waiting to be claimed, line by line, blatt by blatt, chazarah after chazarah. Regardless of age, background, profession, location, or income level, every lomed in every chabura comes to own their masechta through meticulous learning, steady reviews...

On Carlton Road in the heart of Monsey sits a treasure.
It’s a treasure that has been giving forth diamonds for four decades, enriching the community around it and benefitting many people beyond its immediate environs.
That treasure is Yeshiva Shaarei Torah, a pioneering mosad haTorah that continues to serve as a mainstay in the greater olam haTorah, standing at the forefront of the Torah world, producing bnei Torah who have gone on to spread what they’ve learned and to be marbitz Torah in communities across the globe.
As Yeshiva Shaarei Torah prepares for its gala expansion dinner on March 26, it is enlightening to take a look back at the history of this bastion of Torah.

R' Yehuda Kaszirer | From The Bais Medrash to the Front Lines Saving Of Lives
Rabbi Yehudah Kaszirer is the director of Bikur Cholim of Lakewood.
Yehuda was born and raised in Flatbush. His mother, Mrs. Suri Kazsirer, is known as a one-person engine of giving. The Kazsirer family was close with the Novominsker Rebbe, and Yehudah attended the Novominsker yeshivah. Prior to becoming director of Bikur Cholim, he a third-grade rebbi at a local cheder.
He made national news during the pandemic when Dr. Michael Joyner of the Mayo Clinic asked him to “do what you can” to collect as many samples of blood plasma as possible. 36 hours later, Yehuda boarded a jet with roughly 1,000 vials of blood stored in coolers, NBC reported: “It had been drawn from members of the community through a blood drive organized with military-like speed.”

Regardless of age, background, profession, location, or income level, every lomed in every chabura comes to own their masechta through meticulous learning, steady reviews and constant chizuk from the chevra and Rosh Chaburah.
And there is no greater joy than coming to own your masechta as the chavrei Kinyan do with great devotion and commitment. This joy exploded as the learning segment turned into a mass siyum with music and dancing reminiscent of a chasunah combined with Simchas Torah.
As Rabbi Yosef Elefant emotionally exclaimed during the lavish, delectable seudah served afterwards, Torah becomes areiv, sweet when it becomes me’urav, combined and part of the lomed Torah. And that kinyan comes about through ameilus, the hard work of learning the gemarah clearly and reviewing them till they’re “in the bones”.
In a sign of his respect for the gathered, Rabbi Elefant flew in from Eretz Yisroel especially for this event. Similarly, besides the members from Lakewood, Monsey, Brooklyn, and the Five Towns, the crowd contained significant delegates from Los Angeles to Rhode Island, Toronto to Panama, and Gateshead to Johannesburg. Torah has no limits, no barriers.
At the conclusion of the dinner the Kinyan members and their families attested in the heartwarming video presentation how this program has had a positive impact on their lives, that of their husbands and fathers. Torah when absorbed within inspires growth and greatness as was alluded to in the evening’s theme L’gadlus – Inspiring Greatness.
The evening climaxed with a hartzege kumzitz and more dancing with Yisroel Wulliger. All the guests left with memories – but more importantly, a renewed drive and commitment to continue on their personal journey to Greatness.
The yeshiva was known as Monsey Mesivta when it was first founded in 1968 by Rabbi Emanuel Schwartz and Rabbi Leibel Reznick, with Rabbi Gavriel Bodenheimer and Rabbi Dovid Nojowitz as Rebbeim. In 1977, it was renamed Yeshiva Shaarei Torah and was brought under the leadership of Rav Berel Wein. At the time, Shaarei Torah was just one of two mesivtos in all of Monsey, an astounding fact when one views the broad Torah landscape of Rockland County today.
Comprised of 4 classes with 80 bochurim, the yeshiva was located in a humble building on Viola Road, which later became the Bais Mikroh building.
A few years later, the yeshiva founded a kollel, which was led by Rav Zev Hoberman, author of Ze’ev Yitrof and a renowned marbitz Torah. Members of the kollel included Rav Yisroel Gettinger and Rav Yitzchok Heimowitz, who is a rebbi at the yeshiva today. Rabbeim at the time included Rav Dovid Katzenstein and Rav Chaim Zev Levitan.
In 1985, the yeshiva settled into its present building on West Carlton Road, operating for the next twelve years under the leadership of Rav Wein.
In 1997, Rav Wein moved to Eretz Yisroel and Rav Mordechai Wolmark assumed the position of Rosh Hayeshiva, with Rav Chaim Wein serving as Menahel. Under the leadership of Rav Wolmark, the yeshiva blossomed, seeing unprecedented expansion and becoming a desired destination for young men seeking aliyah in Torah in an environment conducive to their growth.
In the year 2000, in conjunction with a hachnosas Sefer Torah, Shaarei Torah celebrated the dedication of a newly-constructed state-of-the-art student residence hall accommodating 150 talmidim.
In 2006, Rav Chaim Schwartz assumed the position of Menahel of the mesivta, which experienced a resurgence, drawing outstanding bochurim to its ranks, providing them with exceptional limudei kodesh and high-level limudei chol as part of a well-rounded chinuch approach.
Eight years ago, with the active involvement of Rav Nosson Tzvi Finkel zt”l, Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshivas Mir Yerushalayim, Rav Asher Weiss was appointed Rosh Bais Medrash and Shaarei Torah became a popular choice of bnei Torah returning to the United States after learning at Yeshivas Mir Yerushalayim and other yeshivos in Eretz Yisroel. Rav Weiss’ initial group of sixteen talmidim burgeoned to well over a hundred.
In 2013, the yeshiva expanded its bais medrash and converted classrooms into an auxiliary bais medrash to accommodate its tremendous growth. A year later, the kollel was renamed Kollel Zichron Zev in memory of Rav Wolmark’s father-in-law, R’ Zev Wolfson z”l, the legendary Torah builder and supporter.
This year, as the yeshiva marks its 42nd year, the growth continues, with Yeshiva Shaarei Torah opening a new post-mesivta, first-year bais medrash under the leadership of Rav Tzvi Elimelech Weinberg, himself an alumnus of the yeshiva.
In fact, most of the current staff members of Yeshiva Shaarei Torah are former talmidim of the yeshiva, bringing the unique flavor of the yeshiva full circle.
The calendar has moved forward, but the values and ideals of Yeshiva Shaaei Torah remain unchanged since the day of its founding. That unwavering commitment to its talmidim and to instilling and teaching the purest devar Hashem remain key ingredients in the recipe of success that has come to define this distinctive makom Torah.
