Why China's Largest Volcano Is So Unusual
Mount Paektu (also known as Changbai Mountain) is one of the largest volcanoes on earth and yet, for the longest time, nobody could explain where it came from or why it exists. Here we will discuss why this volcano is so unusual and how the geological mystery surrounding it could eventually be solved.

The Active Volcano in North Korea; Paektu / Baekdu
Did you know that South Korea and North Korea both contain several active volcanoes? One of these volcanoes was responsible for one of the largest eruptions in human history. I am referring to Paektu, which last erupted in 1903. This video covers the recent eruptions from this volcano, and states the general hazard which it poses in the future.
This video was made by a geologist who is based in Arizona.

North Korea state TV airs video of Kim Jong-un riding a horse up the sacred mountain, Mount Paektu
North Korea's state-run television KRT broadcast a new video of leader Kim Jong Un riding white horse at a sacred mountain with his aides in late 2019.
In the about one-hour footage, Kim, North Korean first lady Ri Sol Ju and high-ranking officials were seen riding horses in snow-capped Mount Paektu and visiting historical places where the state founder Kim Il Sung stayed.
Mount Paektu, a volcano straddling North Korea's border with China, is sacred to many Koreans, both in the north and south, who revere it as the mythical birthplace of a unified and independent peninsula.
According to North Korean history, Kim's grandfather, Kim Il Sung, based his anti-Japanese military campaign on the mountain. North Korea says Kim Jong Un's father, Kim Jong Il, was born at Mount Paektu, though histo...

Lyrics: Ri Ji-song (늏ì§ì±)
Recorded appr. 2015.04.27 Mokran Video DPRK
The song in this video became the north Korean big hit of 2015. The catchy tune with rhythmic elements from traditional Korean music and lyrics with direct religious references tells a lot of north Korean culture. Actually this is a sort of gospel song and when Ryu Jin-a (ë„ì§ì) improvises in the end it sounds very similar to a gospel choir in an American church!
The sacred mountain Mt Paektu (ë°±ëì°) plays an important role for the whole Korean people. The still active stratovolcano is located on the Chinese - Korean border and reaches an altitude of 2744 m.
The very deep crater on the top is filled with water forming the very beautiful Heavens Lake (ìČì§). Mythologically this ...

Background on Baekdu Mountain ahead of President Moon Jae-in's visit
ë°±ëì°ì ë°°êČœ
This was not on the initial schedule for President Moon Jae-in's trip to Pyeongyang.
But it's decided today, he will be visiting Baekdusan with his North Korean counterpart tomorrow.
Seo Bo-bin fills us in on the significance of this mountain.
Korean President Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un have decided to visit Mount Baekdu together tomorrow.
During the April summit in Panmunjom, President Moon mentioned that he really wanted to visit Mount Baekdu and that he wants to visit the mountain and see its crater lake, Lake Cheonji, from the Korean side and not the Chinese side. He repeated his wish when he arrived in North Korea earlier this week.
With a height of two-thousand-seven-hundred-forty-four meters, Baekdu Mountain is the highest mountain on the Korean...

Ecosystems are so sensitive that minor external impact can destory them easily.
Especially the human impacts are critical to the fates of other species.
Species may become endangered because of the human impact, but on the one hand they surprisingly recover themselves if those interventions vanish.
Nature is known to have great resilience.
Through these wild creatures which became endangered because of human species yet flourished as human impacts disappeared, we want to investigate the great power of resilience and cure of the Mother Nature.
[Return] Part 1, Return of the Tigers
The most inaccessible, and the most powerful creature on Earth.
Siberian Tigers are especially the most fearful yet familiar predators to Koreans.
In South Korea, there is no official record of discovery of them. In North Korea, these are no credible records left.
Due to constant hunting and destruction of habitats, Siberian Tigers were near extinct, only about 30 entities were living in Primorsky, Russia in 1930s.
Fortunately thanks to Russia's protection policy, they avoided extinction and the entities are estimated to have grown steadily to 600 in the wild these days. Amur leopards, also known as Korean leopards, are at worse status; only 150 entities are living in the wild which makes them the most rare cats on Earth.
EBS followed these 2 species through Central Sikhote-Alin(Latest habitat of Siberian Tigers) to North Korea-Russia Border and filmed them alive! It is evident that these 2 beasts are expanding their territories to Korean Peninsula.

Music: U Jong-hui (ì°ì íŹ) 2015
Mythologically this is the spiritual birthplace of the Korean people and many want to visit this place as a sort of pilgrimage. The border goes right through the lake so south Koreans can visit from the Chinese side.
In early spring 2015 north Korean marshal Kim Jong-un visited the place. One can drive all the way up but due to snow this is usually only possible in summer. They probably had to dig through some snow to manage to the top at this early time of the year. The footage on the backdrop in this video shows him standing proudly at the top in heavy winds.
Mt Paektu is the very base of spiritual life in north Korea. When people bows and places flowers in front of the statues of former leaders Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-il at the Mansuade Grand Monument in Pyongyang they also pay respect to the large mosaic of Mt Paektu behind the statues and to the whole Korean people.

On September 20, 2015 we did the spectacular Mt. Paektu hike to the top. We started from the end point of the funicular, which was still not the easiest hike, as we were at 9000 feet of altitude. It was nice to see the North Korean students at the top. The view was breathtaking!

With a height of two-thousand-seven-hundred-forty-four meters, Baekdu Mountain is the highest mountain on the Korean Peninsula and Northeast China. It's bordered by Hamgyong province in North Korea and Jilin province in northeast China.
It's had several different names since ancient times.
The modern Korean name Mount Baekdu, meaning white-head mountain, was first recorded over 13-hundred years ago. Around that time, it was also called Taebaek Mountain, meaning great-white mountain.
Its crater lake at the top of the mountain, which is called Heaven Lake, or Lake Cheonji in Korean, is one of the highest crater lakes in the world.
A lot of international visitors, including many South Korean visitors, climb the mountain from the Chinese side. It is also a very popular tourist destination for visitors to North Korea as well.
In the inter-Korean summit agreement in 2007, the South and North agreed to implement tours of Baekdu Mountain, and even establish a direct Baekdu Mountain-Seoul air route.
