The Baal Cycle from Ancient Canaanite Mythology
This video is a creative production of the story of how Baal became king of the Canaanite pantheon. This myth was discovered on tablets in the ancient Canaanite city of Ugarit in Syria. The translation for this video was used from "Stories From Ancient Canaan" by Michael D. Coogan and Mark S. Smith.
Ancient people did not always leave behind labeled
statues of their gods; therefore, we cannot know exactly
how Baal, El, Asherah, etc. were meant to look.
However, all figures and artifacts in this production

therefore offer a fairly good representation of how
the ancient Canaanites saw their world.

I actually read the Baal myth...here's what I found! (Part 1)
In this series we are looking at the story of Baal from the Ras Shamra texts found at Ugarit. Baal is one of the main Canaanite gods whom Israel was tempted to worship in the Hebrew Bible alongside their pagan neighbors. The more we know about the Baal myth, the more we recognize when the Biblical authors use imagery associated with it and what Scripture proclaims about the TRUE “rider on the clouds”, YHWH!

Is Yahweh NOTHING More Than A Copy of The God BAAL?
In the Baal Cycle, religious texts from Ugarit, we have a line about Baal and he's called 'the charioteer of the clouds'. Now in Ugaritic material, this was a stock description of Baal. No one in the ancient world would have thought Baal was less than deity, Baal was a deity. Baal worship was ubiquitous in the ancient world. Why is it important? Because the Old Testament writers, on five occasions, will lift this title of Baal and attributed to the God of Israel, to Yahweh. Check it out!

The Story of Baal as Told in the Baal Cycle | Canaanite Mythology
This video tells the the story of Baal, the Canaanite storm god associated with fertility. The story comes from the so-called Baal Cycle text, which was discovered on a series of clay tablets in the 1920s in Ugarit (modern day Ras Shamra), situated on the Mediterranean coast of northern Syria.
The Baal Cycle can be summarized as two parts:
In Part 1, Baal fights Yam (god of the seas and symbolic of chaos), and with the help of the war goddesses Anat and the mother goddess Asherah, becomes king of the gods and is rewarded with his own temple, establishing him as the protector of order and vanquisher of chaos.
In Part 2, Baal seeks to subjugate Mot (god of death and the underworld). But he fails and Mot kills him. Again it is Anat who comes to his rescue, helping him to overcome death.

The Sea Myth, the Ba'al Cycle, and the Bible
Ba'al shows up a lot in the Bible. Today we are going to look at a series of myths related to Ba'al recovered from the ancient city of Ugarit (modern Ras Shamra). These stories conform quite well to what is called the "Sea Myth" which we discussed in last weeks video. We will see what's in these stories, how we can understand them, and what, if any, significance they have for understanding the Bible.

Canaan 7 - The Baal Cycle - Oldest Stories Podcast
Today we begin perhaps the most significant of the surviving myths from Canaan, the Baal cycle. In the Baal cycle, we look at Ba'al Hadad, the mighty storm god, as he battles various foes in a great contest over the kingship of heaven. It is a subject we have seen before, but of course the Canaanites do things a bit differently than their neighbors. In this, the first of three major sections, Baal fights against Yamm, the god of rivers and seas. The story is sadly very damaged, but there is still a good bit of interesting things here, even if it does get a bit of the character of a radio show fighting against the static to be heard.

Interestingly, where Yam is slayed and not mentioned again, both Baal and Mot return to life after having been killed. So, where Yam stays dead and beaten, Mot eventually only submits to Baal, implying that death can ultimately not be defeated.

Notes for the episode are on the webpage at oldeststories.net
The Oldest Stories podcast tells the history and myth of bronze age Mesopotamia beginning with the first written clay tablets circa 3000 BCE. Using their stories and histories, we can learn a great deal about the people of the ancient world and see how the people of the very first civilizations were not all that different from us nowadays, except of course for the places where they were very different. The past is a foreign country after all.
