NATO reporting names are so pervasive in American discourse that you could be forgiven for assuming that names like “SA-2 Guideline” and “Su-57 Felon” are simply translations of these systems' actual names. The truth, however, is that NATO reporting names are issued by NATO using naming conventions designed specifically to both quickly relay the type of weapon system or platform you're talking about, and to mitigate confusion between troops from different member nations.

(1:20) Where do these names come from?
(1:55) The meanings behind NATO reporting names.
(3:59) Here’s what NATO themselves have to say about reporting names and how they’re assigned.

When a BF-109 Sliced Through a B-17
The All American, high over the skies of Tunisia was practically split in two by a BF-109. A testament to the ruggedness of these birds was that this one kept flying and got all the crew back safely to Biskra air base. Over the years many versions of this story have been embellished with the mistruths. We tried to stick to the facts for this one, leaving out embellishments such as the lashing together of parachutes to keep the tail on and falsehoods such as landing in England over 2000 miles away ! We think it's an amazing story with just the facts.

When a Ball Turret Gunner Saved His B-17
It’s May 1, 1943 and in the ball turret of his B-17 is gunner, Sergeant Maynard H. Smith. Known to the crew as Snuffy, Smith was not a tall man which was an essential requirement for a ball turret gunner.
Due to faulty equipment the B-17’s find themselves unexpectedly low over occupied France. Set upon by German guns and FW 190s, the B-17 was damaged beyond repair and on fire. 3 of the men bailed out over the English Channel. What happened next was a feat of bravery and endurance that saved the plane and the remaining crew. Tending the sick, defending the plane with the waist guns and putting out the fire at the same time, Smith showed true grit in this incredible episode of WW2. This earned him the medal of honor, but despite this, the unruly and unpopular Smith found himself demot...

When a BF-109 spared a B-17
December 20th 1943, a badly shot up B-17 struggled to stay in the air, at the controls Charlie Brown. Passing low over a German airfield, it was spotted by Franz Stigler who raced to intercept, just one victory away from receiving the Knight's Cross. What happened next would be called one of the most incredible acts of kindness between enemies.
Thanks to Adam Makos for allowing us to use the footage of the first meeting of Stigler and Brown. You should also read the full story in the book 'A Higher Call' by Adam Makos & Larry Alexander.
We received many requests to do this in our new style. We hope you like it.

The Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress is a four-engined heavy bomber developed in the 1930s for the United States Army Air Corps (USAAC). Competing against Douglas and Martin for a contract to build 200 bombers, the Boeing entry (prototype Model 299/XB-17) outperformed both competitors and exceeded the Air Corps' performance specifications. Although Boeing lost the contract (to the Douglas B-18 Bolo) because the prototype crashed, the Air Corps ordered 13 more B-17s for further evaluation. From its introduction in 1938, the B-17 Flying Fortress evolved through numerous design advances, becoming the third-most produced bomber of all time, behind the four-engined Consolidated B-24 Liberator and the multirole, twin-engined Junkers Ju 88. The B-17 was primarily employed by the USAAF in the daylight strategic bombing campaign of World War II against German industrial, military and civilian targets. The United States Eighth Air Force, based at many airfields in central, eastern and southern England, and the Fifteenth Air Force, based in Italy, complemented the RAF Bomber Command's night-time area bombing in the Combined Bomber Offensive to help secure air superiority over the cities, factories and battlefields of Western Europe in preparation for the invasion of France in 1944. The B-17 also participated to a lesser extent in the Pacific War, early in World War II, where it conducted raids against Japanese shipping and airfields.

This earned him the medal of honor, but despite this, the unruly and unpopular Smith found himself demoted.
