“Kozmikus a szar” | életútinterjú Tarr Bélával [interview with ENG subs with Béla Tarr]
Tarr Béla még azoknak is megvan (legalább hallomásból), akik irtóznak az úgynevezett művészfilmektől. “Ja igen, a Sátántangó, amiben 20 percig nézhetjük a tehenek seggét - vágatlanul”.

Family Nest Q&A with Béla Tarr
Director Béla Tarr discusses his 1979 feature, Family Nest, as part of his recent two-day visit to FLC. Moderated by Tyler Wilson. Learn more: https://www.filmlinc.org/series/bela-tarr-in-person/#films
Tarr’s striking debut feature, begun when he was 22, has been likened to the work of John Cassavetes and Ken Loach for its warts-and-all snapshot of a seven-member family sharing a small apartment during a national housing crisis. The overcrowding puts particular pressure on the marriage of Laci, a soldier newly discharged from the army, and his wife, Irén, who spends her days searching in vain for a home of their own—and an escape from Laci’s belligerent father. Impressively acted by a cast of mostly nonprofessional actors, Family Nest offers a pungent critique of patriarchy in all its fo...

Werckmeister Harmonies - 4k Restoration Trailer
One of the major achievements of twenty-first-century cinema thus far, Béla Tarr’s mesmeric parable of societal collapse is an enigma of transcendent visual, philosophical, and mystical resonance. Adapted from a novel by the celebrated writer and frequent Tarr collaborator László Krasznahorkai, Werckmeister Harmonies unfolds in an unknown era in an unnamed village, where, one day, a mysterious circus—complete with an enormous stuffed whale and a shadowy, demagogue-like figure known as the Prince—arrives and appears to awaken a kind of madness in the citizens, which builds inexorably toward violence and destruction. In thirty-nine of his signature long takes, engraved in ghostly black and white, Tarr conjures an apocalyptic vision of dreamlike dread and fathomless beauty.

Impressively acted by a cast of mostly nonprofessional actors, Family Nest offers a pungent critique of patriarchy in all its forms, and early evidence of Tarr’s innate mastery of the moving image. New 2K restoration. A Janus Films release.

Among the world’s most respected and transformative filmmakers, Béla Tarr—whose final film, The Turin Horse, played at NYFF49—made his international breakthrough with this astonishing, singular adaptation of the novel by László Krasznahorkai about the arrival of a false prophet in a small farming collective during the waning days of Communism. Divided into 12 distinct episodes, this seven-and-a-half hour masterpiece weaves in and out of the lives of the locals as the silver-tongued Irimiás (played by Tarr’s longtime musical composer Mihály Vig) promises a bright future in a new promised land. This bleak yet mordantly funny study of domestic and social decay was ranked 36th on the most recent Sight & Sound critics’ poll of the greatest film ever made. Sátántangó has been restored in 4K from the original 35mm camera negative by Arbelos in collaboration with the Hungarian Filmlab. An Arbelos release.

Opens in New York at Film at Lincoln Center 5/26.
