I took a ride in Waymo’s fully driverless car
Waymo’s fully driverless vehicles are doing passenger trips in the suburbs outside Phoenix, Arizona. We got to experience it first hand, and our ride included a close brush with a construction site, a wrong turn, and a flock of pigeons. But more importantly, it got us thinking about what it means when Waymo says the future is driverless, and what we lose when we eliminate human driving.

San Francisco Is Teeming With Self-Driving Cars And It’s A Mess
Self-driving cars without safety drivers behind the wheel have flooded San Francisco streets. In August, two of the leading autonomous vehicle companies, General Motors-owned Cruise and Alphabet-owned Waymo, were granted permission to expand operations, allowing people to hail a driverless car like an Uber. But the launch has been plagued with issues. In October, California’s Department of Motor Vehicles suspended Cruise’s permit to operate the company’s driverless fleet in the state, citing an incident in which a Cruise vehicle dragged a pedestrian for 20 feet after a collision. Cruise had been quickly expanding to other cities including Phoenix, Austin, Dallas, Houston and Miami, but the company paused driverless operations nationwide following the California suspension. Putting an autonomous vehicle to the test in downtown London
I recently had the opportunity to ride in a car made by the British company Wayve, which has a fairly novel approach to self-driving vehicles. Inside The World's Most Futuristic Driverless Taxi
This is the world’s first fully autonomous car for ride-hailing created by Waymo. While we were in San Francisco, we had to go and check out the autonomous vehicles that have been picking people up across the Californian city.
The all-electric fleet of self-driving cars works exactly like paid ride hailing apps, minus the driver.
Alex was able to see the future of ride-hailing in action, and we cannot wait to see technology like this roll out to new cities in the future!

Lidar vs. Tesla: the race for fully self driving cars
In the world of autonomous vehicles, lidar sensors are the center of debate. Self-driving car companies, like Cruise and Waymo, use lidar as the key ingredient to advance their autonomous vehicle navigation while skeptics, like Elon Musk, claim it to be useless. Transportation editor, Andrew Hawkins, explores the landscape of both and why exactly lidar continues to be at the forefront of complete autonomous driving. #technology #cars #lidar

Why Ford And VW Shut Down Their Multi-Billion Dollar Self-Driving Project
Ford invested $1 billion in self-driving startup Argo AI in 2017, and Volkswagen joined with a $2.6 billion investment 2 years later. It was an attempt to match rivals such as Uber, Tesla and Google. At its height, Argo AI was reportedly valued at $12.4 billion. But in 2022 Argo AI shut down. Ford said the it didn't attract new investors, and that profitability was "a long way off". Both automakers are spending big in electrification - $50 billion in Ford's case and more than three times that in VW's case. VW still pursued autonomous driving projects for commercial uses, and Ford focused on more modest L2 and L3 driver assistance technology.

Waymo is still operating robotaxis in San Francisco.
Before Cruise’s permit was revoked, CNBC’s Deirdre Bosa took a ride in one of its autonomous vehicles. She also gave Waymo a try and gives a comparison of the two very different rides. She also sat down with San Francisco city officials and Kyle Vogt, CEO of Cruise, to explore how the launch of robotaxis has been going for the city and what’s next.
