The 800 metres, or 800 meters (US spelling), is a common track running event. It is the shortest common middle-distance running event. The 800 metres is run over two laps of the track (400 metre track) and has been an Olympic event since the first games in 1896. During indoor track season the event is usually run on a 200-metre track, therefore requiring four laps.
The event was derived from the imperial measurement of a half a mile, a traditional English racing distance. Imperial racing distances were common in the United States. American high schools (in the name of the NFHS) were the last to convert to metric distances in 1980, following the NCAA's conversion in 1976. Countries associated to the English system converted to metric distances after the 1966 Commonwealth Games. 800Β m is 4.67Β m less than half a mile.
The event combines aerobic endurance with anaerobic conditioning and sprint speed. Both the aerobic and anaerobic systems are being taxed to a high extent, thus the 800 metre athlete is required to combine training between both systems.

Relive the Olympic 800m race at Munich 1972 with us and remember David Wottle's incredible spirit that led him to Olympic gold!
Tendinitis in his knees hampered David Wottle's training in the weeks leading up to the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich. His start in the 800m final was rather slow. Things looked kind of hopeless for Wottle for the first 200m. But Wottle did not give up and fought his way back to the leading group of the athletes to finally securing the 800m gold in the last few metres of the track.

Don't play football We play Fenders We chop fish in kitchen blenders We're a disgrace to our gender We're the men! Always together night and day It makes our girlfriends think we're gay But who needs women when you've got friends? We're the men! The men will never let me down The men will always be around The men won't argue, scratch, or fight The men won't say, "I've got a headache tonight"! On Friday night we'll all jump in a car And blow all our money at a go-go bar Sober up for a week to do it over again because We're the men! We're twenty-one, but we act like we're ten We're as immature as we've ever been Maybe we'll grow up, but I don't know when because We're the men! We'll get together Drink together Sweat together Stink together Laugh together Cry together Live together And die together!
