In general, an assistance dog is trained to aid or assist an individual with a disability. Many are trained by an assistance dog organization, or by their handler, often with the help of a professional trainer.
Classification
Assistance dogs fall into two broad categories: service dogs and facility dogs.[1] Service dogs are defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act as dogs that are individually trained to do work or perform tasks for people with disabilities. State and local governments, businesses, and nonprofit organizations that serve the public generally must allow service animals to accompany people with disabilities in all areas of the facility where the public is normally allowed to go.[2] Facility dogs are used by working professionals to aid multiple people.[3]
Common examples of service dogs include:
• Guide dogs assist the blind and the visually impaired.
• Hearing dogs, or signal dogs, help the deaf and hard of hearing.
• Mobility assistance dogs
• Medical alert dogs
• Psychiatric service dogs

Service Dogs and Invisible Disabilities | Sarah Meikle | TEDxDeerfield
Psychiatric service dogs are misunderstood; very few people produce them and there is a desperate need for more people to do so. A Labrador has transformed his disabled partner's life by learning how to pay at tills, load the laundry and collect money from cash machines.
Chloe Bellotti, 29, from Suffolk, suffers with spinal muscular atrophy – a genetic condition that causes muscle weakness – meaning she relies on an electric wheelchair for mobility and requires around the clock care.
But optimistic Chloe can’t thank her assistant dog enough as Morris, five, the black Labrador, enough for giving her ‘normality and independence’ for the first time in almost three decades.
She can now carry out day to day duties with the help of her four-legged friend who is able to load the washing machine, collect money from the cashpoint and even pay for the groceries – to name a few.

Psychiatric service dogs are misunderstood; very few people produce them and there is a desperate need for more people to do so. There are even more people that could benefit from these animals that do not realize that exist--and that they represent a treatment that can often meet needs that no other option can.
There is also a desperate need for more members of the public to be well informed regarding how to interact with people with service dogs. Did you know that it is common for people to bark (yes, that’s right, people barking!) at service dogs?

Lily's classmates noticed that humans are not the only ones who provide services; service dogs also play an important service role. "They are more than beacons of hope, accompanying people with disabilities and providing unwavering support. They are more than animals, they are dedicated partners, working tirelessly to improve the lives of the humans they help in amazing ways." In general, an assistance dog is trained to aid or assist an individual with a disability.
