Could Asiatic Lions Survive in Africa?
Several lion subspecies are found in the wild. Two of them are the African lion and the Asiatic lion.
When the two subspecies of Panthera leo are seen side by side, differences between them might seem relatively minor -- but appearances don't tell the whole story. Today, fewer than 30,000 African lions and only about 400 Asiatic lions are left in the wild. Asiatic lions once prowled from the Middle East to India. LIONS in India - Wildlife Documentary HD
LIONS in India - Wildlife Documentary HD
This film explores the extraordinary story of Asia’s last lions and their recovery from near extinction. From a mere 20 individuals a century ago, they now number over 400. But the lions have outgrown their sanctuary and spilled out into the surrounding countryside and villages. Yet here, a unique relationship has developed between lions and people, revealing a story, not of continual conflict as we might expect, but one of survival and tolerance.

Male Asiatic lions do not live in prides. In fact, they tend to only associate with female lions when mating or at large kills. Otherwise, they live alone or in partnership with another male lion. These partnerships allow male Asiatic lions to control larger territories and more easily scare off rival males.

The lion is one of the big cats in the Felidae family and a genus Panthera member. It has been listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List since 1996, as populations in African range countries declined by about 43% since the early 1990s. Lion populations are untenable outside designated protected areas. Although the cause of the decline is not fully understood, habitat loss and conflicts with humans are the greatest causes of concern. The West African lion population is listed as Critically Endangered since 2016.

The Asiatic lion, a subspecies that split from African lions around 100,000 years ago, once prowled across Asia and the Middle East. Sadly, the lions were hunted nearly to extinction, with as few as ten individuals left in existence by the late 1800s.
Today in Gujarat, India, the tiny population of wild Asiatic lions has found refuge in Gir National Park. With the help of conservation groups and local communities, the population has grown to around 500 individuals.

In the province of Gujarat, in the Northeast of India, there is a semi-arid region with vegetation and landscape which resemble the savannahs of East Africa.
Inland, there is a 1,883 square kilometres national park which shelters and protects animals which are increasingly threatened by the incessant growth of the human population. This is a reserve for many Indian species, but it owes its status to one species in particular, the most powerful one in the region: the Asian lion.
Gir’s ecosystem has attained significant stability since the park was created.
More than 300 Asian lions enclosed in their small, little-known, Indian sanctuary conserve the genetic make-up inherited from the legendary Assyrian Lions. Man has driven them to the verge of extinction, but paradoxically it is thanks to their relation with the indigenous people of this area that the Asian lions have survived in the forest of Gir.
The maldharis live in small settlements surrounded by thorny fences known as “nesses”. When the park was created, a large number of the 845 maldhari families were rehoused outside the protected area and today there are 361 families housed in 54 nesses still remaining inside the park.
Many generations of life with the big cats have taught both man and animals to tolerate each other so that the maldharis can wander at their leisure through the thick forest without risking their lives and without carrying guns with which to kill the lions.
Asian lions started evolving differently from their African counterparts at some stage between 55,000 and 200,000 years ago. Now, the two subspecies have different genetic, osteological and morphological features the latter being obvious from the outside. The Asian lions have a characteristic crease on their stomachs, virtually non-existent in African lions. Although the lock of hair at the end of the tail is bigger in the Asian lion, the mane is much shorter than in the African lion: they are slightly smaller and as the population fell to a minimum of 20, their genetic variability has been lost. However, the characteristic which most distinguishes the two species of lion is their behaviour towards man.
Today the forest of Gir protects the last bastion of a legendary animal. The number of lions in the park has reached the maximum limit that the eco-system can stand, and the lions need new settlements. But in an over-populated India, the job of finding new lands is getting more and more difficult. And today, Gir keeps hope alive for the forgotten Asian lion.

Asiatic Lion
The Asiatic lion (Panthera Leo Leo) is found only at the Gir national park in the Gujarat state of India in the world, which is listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List because of its small population. Asiatic lions were once found in the plains and forests of North to East and West Bengal and Madhya Pradesh. But currently, the only Gir forest and the surrounding countryside are the only habitats of lions. Since 2015, Gir Forest National Park has steadily increased. In June 2020, the 15th Asiatic Lion Census was conducted over 30,000 km (18641.136 sq mi), the lion population was estimated at 674 individuals, comprising 159 adult males, 262 adult females, 115 Subadults, And 138 cubs. The lion population in and around a Growth rate of 28.87 % (But now the lion estimated population is about 1000 above)
Conservation
In 1904, only 11 Asiatic lions remained. Then Nawab Mohabbat Khanji of Junagadh banned hunting and started conservation work. Since then the lion population has been steadily increasing. The lion conservation operation started by the forest department with the support of the local people is today considered to be the world's most successful story. Asiatic lion is a royal social animal, lion and man consider each other as friends, and they never attack humans, lions mostly live around villages and farms so farmers benefit, and the tourism industry is benefiting people economically.
