SHOTLIST
Cardinal Dionigi Tettamanzi, seen as a top candidate to succeed Pope John Paul II, took up his new post as head of the archdiocese of Milan on Sunday to the cheers of a crowd of well-wishers outside the Italian financial capital's cathedral.
The crowds were also out to greet him at the church in Renate, where he was born, on the outskirts of Milan.
Tettamanzi, who was appointed in July by the pontiff to the highly visible and prestigious post as head of the Milan archdiocese, had been serving as cardinal in Genoa.
On the steps outside the entrance to the Duomo, Milan's Gothic cathedral, Tettamanzi, 68, embraced his predecessor, the high-popular Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini, a frank-speaking Jesuit who himself was widely seen as having the qualities to be a Pope.
Martini, 75, had retired from the post he had held since 1979, on health grounds.
In the service inside the cathedral, Martini handed over the Archbishop's crook.
The symbol of the Archdiocese of Milan, it is almost 5-hundred years old.
The first holder was Saint Charles Borromeo, who had been Archbishop of Milan and who died in1584.
Tettamanzi, a moderate, took up his new role with a call for honest government in a city where prosecutors probing corruption scandals helped topple a generation of Christian Democrats and other politicians nationwide a decade ago.
Applauded by Milan's mayor and other local politicians, Tettamanzi also called for "a spirit of enterprise at the service of man and society."
He urged more solidarity to those in need, including immigrants.
The conservative government of Premier Silvio Berlusconi recently cracked down on immigration, trying to stamp out the practice of hiring illegal workers, who often work for low wages in jobs that many Italians shun, such as picking crops and cleaning houses and offices.
Tettamanzi is considered a churchman with a gift for mediation and a natural pastoral ability.
While in Genoa, he used to go around with volunteers from a church group on New Year's Eve, comforting the homeless in the city's streets and train stations.
When the Pope named him to the Milan post, the Vatican praised Tettamanzi for his loyalty to Church teaching.

STORYLINE
One of the leading contenders to replace the soon to be retired Pope Benedict XVI described the decision by the 85-year-old to step down as "surprising" as he led a mass in Milan on Tuesday.
Cardinal Angelo Scola, the 71-year-old archbishop of Milan, has been tipped as one of the leading candidates to replace Pope Benedict XVI, who will become the first pontiff to step down in nearly 600 years at the end of the month.
Benedict XVI announced his resignation on Monday, citing frail health.
At a holy mass in Milano's Duomo Cathedral on Tuesday, Cardinal Scola told the faithful that the "surprising move made by Pope Benedict XVI only enlarges and strengthens our way, to a life full of Jesus' glory."
Scola is close to Benedict, has a fierce intellect and leads the most important archdiocese in Italy - no small thing given that Italians still dominate the College of Cardinals.
The Vatican went out of its way earlier on Tuesday to declare that for Pope Benedict XVI, retirement means just that: retirement.
With speculation swirling about his future role, the Vatican's chief spokesman explicitly stated that Benedict will not influence the election of his successor.
Benedict unexpected resignation opens the door to an array of possible successors, from the conservative Scola to a contender from Ghana and several Latin Americans.
Leading Latin American possibilities include Brazilian Cardinal Odilo Pedro Scherer, the 63-year-old archbishop of Sao Paulo, and Argentine Cardinal Leonardo Sandri, 69, head of the Vatican's office for Eastern rite churches.
Cardinal Peter Kodwo Appiah Turkson of Ghana is one of the highest-ranking African cardinals at the Vatican, currently heading the Vatican's office for justice and peace.
Besides Scola, other leading Italians include Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi, head of the Vatican's culture office.
No date for a conclave to choose the next pope has yet been announced, but it must begin within 20 days of Benedict's February 28 retirement.
That means a new pope will likely be elected by the College of Cardinals by Easter - March 31 this year.
