The King's Singers are a Britisha cappellavocal ensemble founded in 1968. They are named after King's College in Cambridge, England, where the group was formed by six choral scholars. In the United Kingdom, their popularity peaked in the 1970s and early 1980s. Thereafter they began to reach a wider international audience, appearing frequently on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson in the U.S. In 1987, they were prominently featured as guests on the Emmy Award winning ABC-TV special Julie Andrews: The Sound of Christmas.
Today the ensemble travels worldwide for its performances, appearing in around 125 concerts each year, mostly in Europe, the U.S. and the Far East, having recently added the People's Republic of China to their list of touring territories. In recent years the group have had several UK appearances at the Royal Albert Hall Proms and concerts as part of the Three Choirs Festival and the City of London Festival.
History
The group has always consisted of six singers in total, with their membership changing over the years. None of the original members remain. The first stable incarnation of the group, from late 1969 until 1978, comprised:
"Annie Laurie" is an old Scottish song based on a poem by William Douglas (1672?–1748) of Dumfries and Galloway. The words were modified and the tune was added by Alicia Scott in 1834/5. The song is also known as "Maxwelton Braes".
William Douglas
William Douglas became a soldier in the Royal Scots and fought in Germany and Spain and rose to the rank of captain. He also fought at least two duels. He returned to his estate at Fingland in 1694. Traditionally it is said that Douglas had a romance with Anna/Anne Laurie (16 December 1682, Barjarg Tower, in Keir, near Auldgirth, Scotland — 5 May 1764, Friars' Carse, Dumfries-shire, Scotland). Anna was the youngest daughter of Robert Laurie, who became first baronet of Maxwellton in 1685. The legend says that her father opposed a marriage. This may have been because Anna was very young; she was only in her mid-teens when her father died. It may also have been because of Douglas's aggressive temperament or more likely because of his Jacobite allegiances. It is known for certain that they knew of each because in a later letter by Anna she says in reply to news about Douglas, "I trust that he has forsaken his treasonable opinions, and that he is content."
This was the third film of Lillian Gish at MGM, and its poor boxoffice returns marked a decline in the star's career. On a down note Gish stated that her mother became ill during the production of this film and that "...she only showed up for work" as opposed to putting her all into the film.John Wayne makes an early film appearance as a crowd extra.

This anthem - originally written by Harry Dixon Loes as a Christian children's song - became a musical symbol of the civil rights movement in the 1960s and 70s. It's a song that brought people together at that time of challenge and strife, united by its central message of confidence and peace. The arrangement was made by Stacey V. He also sang at most of the Scottish Festivals and at Clan concerts before joining the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company chorus in April 1931. From then until he left the Company in 1937 Robert Wilson played many of the individual singing roles in such productions as Trial by Jury, The Mikado and The Gondoliers.
In 1938 he became a concert singer. For a number of years he headed his own concert party singing Scottish ballads on tour throughout the British Isles. He was also a radio performer and made many recordings, first for Parlophone (1932-33), and later for HMV (beginning in 1943), though none from his Gilbert & Sullivan repertoire. Wilson became one of Scotland's biggest variety stars, and his recordings of such national songs as "A Gordon for Me" and "Down in the Glen" were big sellers. He toured throughout the world until his untimely death in 1964.
Here is the second single from our EP, 'The Library, Vol. 4. It's an arrangement that's been in the library for a few decades now, and it's a total gem. The song is iconic, the harmony is delicious, and our instrumental collaborators are wonderful. The film comes from A Fly on the Wall productions.

Gibbs for our 'Finding Harmony' album which we released in 2020.

«Annie Laurie» is an old Scottish song based on poem by William Douglas (1672?-1748) of Dumfries and Galloway. The words were modified and the tune was added by Alicia Scott in 1834/5. The song is also known as Maxwelton Braes.
- Lyrics -
Maxwellton braes are bonnie
Where early fa's the dew
And it's there that Annie Laurie
Gied me her promise true
Gied me her promise true
Which n'er forgot shall be
And for bonnie Annie Laurie
I'd lay me down an' dee
Her brow is like the snawdrift
Her neck is like the swan
Her face it is the fairest
That e'er the sun shone on
That e'er the sun shone on
And dark blue is her e'e
And for bonnie Annie Laurie
I'd lay me down and dee
Like dew on the gowan lyin'
Is the fa' of her fairy feet
And like winds in summer sighin'
Her voice is low and sweet
Her voice is low and sweet
And she's a' the world tae me
And for bonnie Annie Laurie
I'd lay me down and dee
And for bonnie Annie Laurie
I'd lay me down and dee
ANNIE LAURIE Lawrie Lawry Maxwelton Braes Folk Lyrics Words Sing Along is an old Scottish song based on a poem William Douglas about Annie Laurie. Words edited & tune added by Alicia Scott.
Maxwelton's braes are bonnie,
Where early falls the dew,
and it's there that Annie Laurie
Gave me her promise true.
Gave me her promise true -
Which ne'er forgot will be,
And for bonnie Annie Laurie
I'd lay me down and dee.
Her brow is like the snow-drift,
Her neck is like the swan,
Her face it is the fairest,
That 'er the sun shone on.
That 'er the sun shone on -
And dark blue is her eye,
And for bonnie Annie Laurie
I'd lay me down and dee.
Like dew on gowans lying,
Is the fall of her fairy feet,
And like winds, in summer sighing,
Her voice is low and sweet.
Her voice is low and sweet -
And she's all the world to me;
And for bonnie Annie Laurie
I'd lay me down and dee.

Why do I do, just as you say Why must I just, give you your way Why do I sigh, why don't I try to forget It must have been, That something lovers call fate Kept me saying: "I have to wait" I saw them all, Just couldn't fall 'til we met It had to be you, it had to be you I wandered around, and finally found The somebody who Could make me be true, And could make me be blue And even be glad, just to be sad Thinking of you Some others I've seen, Might never be mean Might never be cross, Or try to be boss But they wouldn't do For nobody else, gave me a thrill With all your faults, I Love you still It had to be you, wonderful you It had to be you
