The Anabasis of Alexander (Latin:Anabasis Alexandri; Greek: Ἀλεξάνδρου Ἀνάβασις, Alexándrou Anábasis), also known as the History, Campaigns, or Expeditions of Alexander (De Expeditione Alexandri, abbr.DeExp.Alex.;Ἱστορίαι Ἀναβάσεως 'Αλεξάνδρον, Historíai Anabáseōs Alexandron), was a history of the campaigns or expeditions ("anabasis") into the Persian Empire by Alexander the Great. It was composed centuries after the fact by the historian Arrian. This work consists of seven books and was Arrian's most important work.
It is one of the few surviving complete accounts of the Macedonian conqueror's expedition. It is primarily a military history and has little to say about Alexander's personal life, his role in Greek politics or the reasons why the campaign against Persia was launched in the first place. Arrian was able to use sources which are now lost, such as the contemporary works by Callisthenes (the nephew of Alexander's tutor Aristotle), Onesicritus, Nearchus, and Aristobulus, and the slightly later work of Cleitarchus. Most important of all, Arrian had the biography of Alexander by Ptolemy, one of Alexander's leading generals and possibly his half-brother.

Crossing the Danube - Anabasis of Alexander the Great, by Arrian - Book 1, Chapter 2 & 3
Alexander the Great has just secured the Macedonian throne and achieved his first victory in battle as king, against the Free Thracians in the mountains. Now he moved onto his main opponents in the region: the Triballians.
Their king and noncombatants retreated to the Island Peuce, while their main force rushed around Alexander, to prevent his retreat into the mountains. But Alexander learned of this. He turned around and caught his opponents by surprise while they were encamped by a forest in a gorge of the Lyginus.
Once the skirmishing ended and the full force of the Macedonian Army pressed forward, the Triballi lines broke and they were slaughtered in the pursuit. Alexander turned towards the Danube and the island Peuce, but couldn't conquer it. He instead felt a longing, a strong de...

From Illyria to Thebes - Anabasis of Alexander the Great by Arrian (Book 1, Chapter 6 & 7)
Alexander the Great just marched towards the city of Pelium, where the revolting Illyrian tribes had been making their stand. Here, Alexander would learn that retreat doesn't necessarily mean total defeat. But he would have to use his scouts, the art of subtlety and superior army to prevail.
But that was not the only crisis at hand. At the same time, the Greek city-state of Thebes rose up in rebellion, supported by Athens. Most of Greek states already disliked Alexander, but when an eye-witness arrives, who claims to have seen Alexander fall in battle, it finally sparks open rebellion.
Will Alexander be able to match and outmaneuver his foes?

Battle of Thebes - Campaigns of Alexander the Great (Anabasis by Arrian - Book 1, Chapter 9)
In Chapter 8 of Arrian's Anabasis of Alexander the Great, We come back to Alexander's siege of Thebes and we look what exactly was the tipping point to launch the attack, as well as the general progression of the battle.
In Thebes, statesmen exiled by the orders of Philip returned, and sparked a rebellion, calling for the people to free themselves of the Macedonian yoke and regain their freedom. With Alexander’s death, they were no longer bound by the treaties imposed on them by the Macedonians. They are right… aren’t they?
The attack commenced, though historians are not unanimous how exactly it came about. What followed was a bloody battle, in which the Thebans made a brave and desperate resistance for a long time, but were in the end slaughtered by armies of both Macedonia and their a...

"The Anabasis of Alexander," written by Arrian the Nicomedian in the 2nd century AD, is a historical account of the campaigns of Alexander the Great. This ancient Greek work is one of the most important sources for understanding the life and conquests of the famous Macedonian king.
Summary:
Arrian's "The Anabasis of Alexander" is a detailed and comprehensive account of Alexander the Great's military campaigns and conquests, from his accession to the throne of Macedonia in 336 BC to his untimely death in 323 BC. The term "anabasis" refers to an expedition or journey into the interior, and the work serves as a chronicle of Alexander's epic journey into the heart of the Persian Empire and beyond.
The book is organized into seven books, each of which covers a specific period in Alexander's life and campaigns:
Book 1: This section provides background information about Alexander's early life, his education by the philosopher Aristotle, and his ascension to the Macedonian throne following the assassination of his father, King Philip II. It also describes his initial campaigns in Greece and Asia Minor.
Book 2: Arrian covers Alexander's conquest of the Achaemenid Empire, including his victories at the Granicus River, Issus, and the capture of the important city of Tyre.
Book 3: This book describes Alexander's march into Egypt, where he was hailed as a liberator and declared pharaoh. It also chronicles his founding of the city of Alexandria and his journey to the Oracle of Ammon at Siwa.
Book 4: Arrian details Alexander's further conquests in Persia, including his decisive victory at Gaugamela, the fall of the Persian capital Persepolis, and his pursuit of Darius III.
Book 5: The narrative shifts to Alexander's campaigns in the eastern regions, including his encounters with various local leaders and battles in Central Asia, Sogdiana, and Bactria.
Book 6: This section covers the final phase of Alexander's campaigns, focusing on his incursion into India, the Battle of Hydaspes, and the mutiny of his troops at the Hyphasis River (Beas River), which ultimately forced him to turn back.
Book 7: The book concludes with Alexander's return to Babylon, his deteriorating health, and his death in 323 BC. Arrian provides an account of the power struggles among Alexander's generals, which ultimately led to the fragmentation of his empire and the beginning of the Hellenistic period.
Arrian's work is notable for its meticulous attention to detail, historical accuracy, and reliance on primary sources, including the lost works of Ptolemy, one of Alexander's generals and historians. Arrian's narrative is generally considered to be a reliable and authoritative source for the life and campaigns of Alexander the Great.
"The Anabasis of Alexander" not only serves as a historical account of one of the most remarkable military conquests in history but also provides valuable insights into the character and leadership of Alexander, as well as the world he helped shape through his campaigns and the subsequent Hellenistic era.

Without a doubt, Alexander the Great was and is one of the most written-about persons of history, despite living more than two millennia ago. Interestingly, at the time of making this video, exactly 2400 years have passed since his death.
The most prominent historical source about Alexander is Arrian's Anabasis of Alexander. It's author, Arrian (Lucius Flavius Arrianus), was a Greek living in the Roman Empire and held many political and military honors and positions.
This video series will attempt to cover the entire Anabasis of Alexander, from his ascension to his death. Filled with additional information about Alexander and his armies, Arrian, and other involved historical figures, it will not only aim to present why Alexander’s path was so impressive, but also provide more background to the events and additional context where the Anabasis can fall short.
This first video will cover Arrian's preface, where he describes his primary sources, as well as the first chapter, which describes Alexander's ascension and consolidation of power, and his first military victory as king - against the Thracians at Mount Haemus, 335 BC.

Alexander the Great is one of the most extraordinary individuals in history. He became king of the fringe Greek kingdom of Macedonia in 336 BC at the age of just 20, and before his death twelve years later, had imposed Macedonian overlordship on Greece, destroyed the mighty Persian Empire and led an army deep into modern Afghanistan and to the Indian frontier.
At Opis he faced a mutiny by his Macedonian troops, angered that he wanted to send some of them home, while appearing to give preference to his new Asian subjects, and adopting many of their customs. Alexander dealt ruthlessly with the ringleaders, before (according to 'The Anabasis' by Roman historian Arrian) making a speech to his army in which he berated his troops for their disloyalty.
The speech, as it has reached us, was no doubt written by Arrian rather than Alexander. His actual words are now impossible to ascertain. But Arrian had access to eyewitness accounts which are now lost (principally Ptolemy and Nearchus), and modern historians generally agree that the speech was a real historical event, and that Arrian gives a good representation of its likely content.
Putting its (contested and debated) value as a historical source to one side, the scene - as it appears in Arrian - is a brilliantly written moment of high drama and emotion, in which Alexander first highlights his debt to his father Philip, before launching into a tirade in which he lists his own astounding achievements and qualities of leadership.
The speech has been abridged and edited by myself for this video.

He instead felt a longing, a strong desire that would come back again and again on his travels. This time it was to cross the Danube. There another enemy awaited him: The Getae.
Danube in its lower course was a sight that most, if not all of the Macedonian force hadn’t seen before. To defeat his enemies, Alexander would have formulate a plan to cross it with his large army and limited ships, all while threatened by the warriors on the opposing side.

What followed was a bloody battle, in which the Thebans made a brave and desperate resistance for a long time, but were in the end slaughtered by armies of both Macedonia and their allies.

The Anabasis of Alexander The Great by Arrian (124AD)
The Anabasis of Alexander (Greek: Ἀλεξάνδρου Ἀνάβασις, Alexándrou Anábasis; Latin: Anabasis Alexandri) was composed by Arrian of Nicomedia during the reign of Hadrian. The Anabasis (which survives complete in seven books) is a history of the campaigns of Alexander the Great, specifically his conquest of the Persian Empire between 336 and 323 BC. Both the unusual title "Anabasis" (literally "a journey up-country from the sea") and the work's seven-book structure reflect Arrian's emulation (in structure, style, and content) of the Greek historian Xenophon, whose own Anabasis in seven books concerned the earlier campaign "up-country" of Cyrus the Younger in 401 BC.
The Anabasis is by far the [...]

What followed was a bloody battle, in which the Thebans made a brave and desperate resistance for a long time, but were in the end slaughtered by armies of both Macedonia and their allies.
