Bates originally wrote the words as a poem, "Pikes Peak", first published in the Fourth of July edition of the church periodical The Congregationalist in 1895. At that time, the poem was titled "America" for publication.
Ward had originally written the music, "Materna", for the hymn "O Mother dear, Jerusalem" in 1882, though it was not first published until 1892. Ward's music combined with the Bates poem was first published in 1910 and titled America the Beautiful.
The song is one of the most popular of the many American patriotic songs.
History
In 1893, at the age of 33, Bates, an English professor at Wellesley College, had taken a train trip to Colorado Springs, Colorado, to teach a short summer school session at Colorado College. Several of the sights on her trip inspired her, and they found their way into her poem, including the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, the "White City" with its promise of the future contained within its alabaster buildings; the wheat fields of America's heartland Kansas, through which her train was riding on July 16; and the majestic view of the Great Plains from high atop Zebulon's Pikes Peak.
America the Beautiful is a 2007 American documentary film directed by Darryl Roberts about self-image in the United States. The film had a limited release on August 1, 2008.
The Rascals were inducted into the Hit Parade Hall of Fame in 2010 and also reunited in 2012 for a series of shows in New York and New Jersey. The reunion continued on in 2013 with shows on Broadway.
History
Eddie Brigati (vocals), Felix Cavaliere (keyboard, vocals), Gene Cornish (guitar) and Dino Danelli (drums) started the band in Brigati and Danelli's hometown of Garfield, New Jersey. Brigati, Cavaliere, and Cornish had previously been members of Joey Dee and the Starliters. Eddie's brother, David Brigati, an original Starliter, helped arrange the vocal harmonies and sang backgrounds on many of the group's recordings (informally earning the designation as the "fifth Rascal"). When Atlantic Records signed them, they discovered that another group, Borrah Minnevitch's and Johnny Puleo's 'Harmonica Rascals', objected to their release of records under the name 'The Rascals'. To avoid conflict, manager Sid Bernstein decided to rename the group 'The Young Rascals'.
In August 2009, it was announced that Miles Kane had left The Rascals to focus on a solo career.
History
Early years
Hailing from Hoylake (The Wirral, on Merseyside) in England, the band began jamming and writing material as a three piece in September 2007.
The Rascals were immediately signed to Deltasonic Records and played their first gig supporting bands including Arctic Monkeys.
Initial releases
They released their debut EP, Out Of Dreams EP, on 9 December, 2007, which contains their first single Out of Dreams
Then, on 18 February, 2008, they released a single, called Suspicious Wit.
Rascalize
The Rascals' debut album Rascalize was released on 23 June, 2008 (first released on iTunes on 15 June, 2008). Although it was not a commercial success only peaking at #100 on the UK Albums Chart for one week the album was generally well received by critics.
Thee Rascals 13, also known as TRS, RSCS, and ATW, is a predominantly Hispanic criminal street gang based in the Atwater Village neighborhood of Los Angeles. The Atwater Boys, who later became "Thee Rascals" were originally formed in the late 1970s by kids in Atwater for protection from two larger and older street gangs, Toonerville Rifa and The Avenues. Some were the children of a third gang Frogtown, whose fathers and families discouraged gang involvement. At first, rivalries were settled through hand-to-hand fist fighting, but, as time went on shootings became the most efficient way to deal with rival gang-members, due mainly in part to the drug trade. Even to this day rival gang members will shoot it out with one another when the time calls for it.
In a society where "celebutantes" like Paris Hilton dominate newsstands and models who weigh less than 90 pounds die from malnutrition, female body image is one of the more dire problems facing today's society. "America the Beautiful" illuminates the issue by covering every base. Child models, plastic surgery, celebrity worship, airbrushed advertising, dangerous cosmetics - no rock is left unturned.

AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL 1945 WORLD WAR II PATRIOTIC FILM 70934
Created in 1945 by the Warner Bros. Studio to sell U.S. Savings Bonds, “America the Beautiful” opens to the patriotic strains of the song of the same name. The film paints a picture of the United States as an industrious society on the move. Shot in Technicolor and directed by six-time Academy Award-winner Gordon Hollingshead, the film begins at mark 00:35 “on your front door, on the street where you live” and spans the American continent through the ranches and farms of the West and the National Parks, to the bustling cities of the East including the metropolis of New York. Wherever the view calls home, the narrator explains at mark 01:25, they arrived there via “paths enchanted that lead to the wonderful pages of a storybook, filled with a glorious living picture that tell the story of America the beautiful.”
With a view of the sprawling landscape of North Dakota (at mark 01:38), the narrator wonders if a farmer fantasizes about watching the ocean (even though his already in the middle of an ocean “of amber grain”). The same is wondered of the fishermen on the coasts of Maine (shown at mark 02:18), and whether they would want to change their surroundings, or of the lumberjacks in the Pacific Northwest (shown at mark 02:36). Following the philosophizing, the film visits Pike’s Peak, Mount Hood, Mount Whitney, all starting at mark 03:11, before traveling a mere 80 miles to Death Valley at mark 03:45. Scenic views of rivers (Wabash, Tennessee, Columbia, Ohio, Mississippi) follow, as does views of the Great Lakes starting at mark 05:40, “inland oceans” that serve as passageways for the transport of wheat, iron, copper, lumber, and other materials. From views of the Pacific Ocean from San Francisco (shown at mark 06:25) to scenic national parks such as Yellowstone and Old Faithful Geyser (mark 08:27), the film continues to take its viewer to places such as Niagara Falls, Bryce Canyon, Carlsbad Caverns, and the Rocky Mountains. “America the beautiful goes on and on and on being beautiful,” says the narrator at mark 11:56.
America is filled with other wonders, the viewer is told, such as magnificent skyscrapers (“steel and stone rising high in the sky”), as well as mills, factories, ranches, and orchards. “In every part of America you’ll find ‘beautiful’ defined differently,” it is said at mark 14:44. That includes sun-worshippers and entertainment-seekers at Coney Island, shown at mark 15:23, as throngs of people crowd the beach and ride the ride. No matter where you may call home, the narrator reminds us that we are all Americans, as the Statue of Liberty is shown at mark 15:47.
To keep America great, the narrator explains in conclusion, all Americans must continue to produce as well as conserve, “and share our blessings with those who need and deserve them.” And citizens must save regularly … including the purchase of United States Savings Bonds … “the safest investment on Earth.”

I've been lonely too long, I've been lonely too long In the past it's come and gone, I feel like I can't go on without love. I've been lonely too long. (He's been lonely too long.) I've been lonely too long. (He's been lonely.) As I look back, I can see me lost and searching. Now I find that I can choose, I'm free. Oh, Yeah! So funny I just have to laugh, All my troubles been torn in half. I been lonely too long. (He's been lonely too long.) Lonely too long. (He's been lonely.) In the past it's come and gone, I feel like I can't go on without love. (Lonely), lonely too long I've been lonely too long. (He's been lonely) Just see me now Makes it worth the time I've waited. She was all I need to make me see, Oh, Yeah! I keep hopin' with all my mind, Everything gonna turn out right. I've been lonely too long. (He's been lonely too long). I've been lonely too long. (He's been lonely.) Now look at me Gliding through this world of beauty Everything I do brings ecstasy, Oh, Yeah! No wonder I could die I feel like I'm 'bout ten miles high! I've been lonely too long. (He's been lonely too long.) Lonely too long. (He's been lonely.) Found myself somebody. (He's been lonely) Don't have to be alone no more. (He's been lonely, He's been lonely.) Don't have to alone no more, no more. (He's been lonely, He's been lonely.)
