Irish government admits defeat over referendums on family and women's roles
The Irish government has been defeated in twin referendums aimed at changing the country's constitution, Prime Minister Leo Varadkar has conceded.
Mr Varadkar, who said he wanted to remove "very old-fashioned language" in Ireland's constitution, said it was clear the amendments were "defeated comprehensively".
The family amendment had proposed extending the meaning of "family" beyond marriage, while the care amendment proposed deleting references to the centrality of a woman's "life within the home".

Irish voters reject referendum to remove 'sexist' language from the constitution | SBS News
A dual referendum in Ireland on redefining family and women's roles in the constitution has been "comprehensively" defeated.
The result came despite the fact that the government - and most opposition parties - had supported the proposed changes.
Prime Minister Leo Varadkar had pitched the vote, held on Friday to coincide with International Women's Day and counted on Saturday, as a chance to delete some "very old-fashioned, very sexist language about women".

29th December 1937: Constitution of Ireland comes into effect following a plebiscite
The process leading to the adoption of the constitution was a reflection of Ireland’s evolving status. Having gained dominion status within the then British Empire in 1922 under the Anglo-Irish Treaty, the new Irish Free State operated under the 1922 Constitution. While this marked a significant step on the road towards full independence, the country maintained its connection to the British Crown.
The 1937 Constitution of Ireland was born out of a desire to fully assert Irish independence following the Statute of Westminster 1931, which granted parliamentary autonomy to the six British Dominions. The then-Prime Minister and later President of Ireland, Eamon de Valera, played a key role in its development. The Constitution reflected Ireland’s identity as a republic and affirmed the Irish p...

Irish government concedes defeat in referendums
Ireland’s government has conceded defeat in the nation's referendums on modernising its constitution.
The campaign sparked debate over the meaning of family and the role of women in the home.
One referendum was to try and expand the definition of family as being founded on marriage to “durable relationships” – a vague term that many lawyers criticised.
The ‘Women in the Home’ referendum – which grabbed a lot of international headlines – was to replace old-fashioned language around a mother’s duties within the home with a clause recognising care provided by family members to one another.
“I think it’s clear at this stage, that the family amendment and the care amendment referendums have been defeated,” Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar said.

Will the Irish remove sexist language in their constitution? | DW News
On International Women's Day Irish voters are voting in a referendum to decide whether or not to switch out language that is deemed sexist and old-fashioned in their constitution.
If approved, the new proposals would largely be symbolic. But they have still caused controversy and a lot of confusion during the government-led campaign.

The Constitution reflected Ireland’s identity as a republic and affirmed the Irish people’s right to self-determination while expressing a commitment to democratic principles, establishing the country as a republic in all but name. Notably, the document emphasized the importance of Gaelic culture and the Irish language.
Key features of the Constitution of Ireland included the establishment of a President as the ceremonial head of state and the recognition of the Taoiseach (Prime Minister) as the head of government. It also enshrined fundamental rights and laid the groundwork for the Irish legal system. A plebiscite on 1 July 1937 saw 56% of voters approve the new Constitution.
The adoption of the new Constitution on 29 December, 1937, signalled a break from the historical ties with the British Crown. This underlined Ireland’s emergence as a sovereign nation and set the stage for Ireland to define its path as a republic. While the Constitution has been subject to a total of 32 amendments in subsequent years, it is the longest continually operating republican constitution within the European Union.

On International Women's Day Irish voters are voting in a referendum to decide whether or not to switch out language that is deemed sexist and old-fashioned in their constitution.
If approved, the new proposals would largely be symbolic. But they have still caused controversy and a lot of confusion during the government-led campaign.

BREAKING | How Ireland SOLVED the Immigration Crisis
Today, one in five residents (22%) in Ireland are foreign-born. Over the past two decades, immigration to Ireland has more than doubled. This unprecedented increase has strained public infrastructure amid a severe housing crisis and rising living costs. Schools, hospitals, and housing services are overwhelmed, leading to frustration among the Irish population, who feel neglected in their own country. It's not just about the numbers; it's about feeling like a stranger in a place that once felt like home. The communal warmth that once characterized Irish society now seems to be fraying as communities clash over national identity and resource allocation.

Why did 1 million people die? - The Great Famine in Ireland ''Gorta Mór''
Great Hunger or simply the Famine and outside Ireland as the Irish Potato Famine, was a period of starvation and disease in Ireland lasting from 1845 to 1852 that constituted a historical social crisis which subsequently had a major impact on Irish society and history as a whole.
The Great Famine in Ireland led to the loss of millions of lives and the emigration of many. This deeply impacted Ireland's demographic structure, causing a significant change in historical terms. The death of over a million people and the emigration of more than a million caused a profound shift in Ireland's demographic makeup. The famine period brought about profound changes in social and economic structures. Many peasant families became unable to afford the high rents paid to landowners, leading to criticism of the rental system. The famine exacerbated the gap between social classes and contributed to the evolution of the social structure.
The Great Famine in Ireland, occurring between 1845 and 1852, is considered one of the most tragic events in Irish history. The primary cause of this disaster was the widespread destruction of the potato harvest by a fungal disease known as "Phytophthora infestans." Potatoes were the main source of food in Ireland at that time, and this damage resulted in the loss of a significant portion of the population's primary food source. The economic, social, and political conditions in Ireland at that time further worsened the famine. Ireland was under the dominion of England, and most Irish peasants paid rent to English landowners. Additionally, due to England's policies, Ireland's agricultural products were often exported to England, making it difficult for the Irish people to access their own products.
During the famine, more than a million people died, and over a million had to leave the country. This massive wave of migration significantly impacted Ireland's population structure and social fabric. This catastrophe left deep scars in Ireland's history and remained a painful memory in the minds of the Irish people for a long time. The famine period also brought about radical changes in Ireland's social and political structure, influencing Ireland's struggle for independence. The Great Famine is not just a historical event but a tragedy that left profound marks in the memory of a nation. This period stands as a significant milestone in Ireland's historical, cultural, and political evolution.

The Great Famine (Irish: an Gorta Mór [ənˠ ˈɡɔɾˠt̪ˠə ˈmˠoːɾˠ]), also known within Ireland as the Great Hunger or simply the Famine and outside Ireland as the Irish Potato Famine,[1][2] was a period of starvation and disease in Ireland lasting from 1845 to 1852 that constituted a historical social crisis which subsequently had a major impact on Irish society and history as a whole.[3] The most severely affected areas were in the western and southern parts of Ireland--where the Irish language was dominant--and hence the period was contemporaneously known in Irish as an Drochshaol,[4] which literally translates to "the bad life" and loosely translates to "the hard times". The worst year of the famine was 1847, which became known as "Black '47".[5][6] During the Great Hunger, roughly 1 million people died and more than 1 million more fled the country,[7] causing the country's population to fall by 20–25% (in some towns, populations fell as much as 67%) between 1841 and 1871. Between 1845 and 1855, at least 2.1 million people left Ireland, primarily on packet ships but also on steamboats and barques—one of the greatest exoduses from a single island in history.
The proximate cause of the famine was a potato blight[13] that infected potato crops throughout Europe during the 1840s, causing an additional 100,000 deaths outside Ireland and influencing much of the unrest in the widespread European Revolutions of 1848.
Crop loss in 1845 has been estimated at anywhere from to as high as one-half of cultivated acreage.
