The City-Center was a plan to raze and rebuild the block between the central Helsinki streets of Kaivokatu, Keskuskatu and Aleksanterinkatu, creating a unified, modern appearance for the area. The plan was originally drafted between 1958 and 1960 by Viljo Revell; Heikki Castrén continued work on the plan after Revell's death in 1964. The fulfillment of the plan would have required the demolition of several old buildings that are today considered to be a vital part of Helsinki's heritage.
The only part of the plan that was implemented as planned is the 1967 office and shopping centre building right across the street from the Helsinki Central railway station, popularly known as Makkaratalo, Finnish for "sausage house": the elevated parking lot occupying the third floor is encircled by a decorative railing which is said to resemble a sausage. The first occurrence of the name was in a caricature drawn by the Finnish cartoonistKari Suomalainen in Helsingin Sanomat. In the cartoon, a man is buying food from a snack bar near the Makkaratalo. He points at the railing, and the snack bar vendor replies, "Well, I'm just a small-time businessman."
Downtown Portland, the city center of Portland, Oregon, United States, is located on the west bank of the Willamette River. It is in the northeastern corner of the southwest section of the city and where most of the city's high-rise buildings are found.
The downtown area is usually considered to extend west from the Willamette to Interstate 405, and south from Union Station to just south of the Portland State University campus (also bounded by I-405). (The northeastern portion of this area is also part of the Old Town Chinatown neighborhood.) High-density business and residential districts near downtown include the Lloyd District, across the river from the northern part of downtown, and the South Waterfront area, currently in development just south of downtown in the South Portland neighborhood. The city recognizes a formal neighborhood called Portland Downtown, bounded by Burnside St., I-405, and the river, except for a few blocks that are part of Old Town Chinatown.
Manchester was settled by colonists around 1672 as a farming community, although at the time it was known just as Orford Parish (the name that can be found on the memorial to the Revolutionary soldiers from the town). The many rivers and brooks provided power for paper, lumber and textile industries, and the town quickly evolved into an industrial center. The town of Hartford once included the land now occupied by the towns of Manchester, East Hartford, and West Hartford. In 1783, East Hartford became a separate town, which included Manchester in its city limits until 1823.
The Pitkin Glassworks operated from 1783-1830 as the first successful glassworks in Connecticut. The Pitkin Glassworks Ruin have been preserved by a historical society.
The station has two side platforms in the median of the Interstate 110 (Harbor Freeway). The platforms can be accessed using elevators and lifts from Manchester Avenue below the freeway. This station has two parking lots, one or each side of the freeway with a total of 127 spaces. The entrance to the station is provided by stairs and elevators under the freeway. Metro Local line 115 stops directly below the station at the street level (Manchester Avenue). On September 6, 2011, the new stop located directly below the Manchester Silver Line station opened for Metro Local line: 115. The new stop is only for eastbound passengers. A westbound stop for lines 115 was not constructed. The station was upgraded with improved lighting in December 2010. CCTV and next bus trip arrival television screens were added onto the station in December 2012 and the monitors became activated on June 2013.

Here's What Downtown Portland, Oregon Looks Like Now
A downtown tour of Portland shows some real surprises!
So here we are in downtown Portland Oregon. You’ve probably heard that Portland has a lot of challenges, and is being run by a terrible liberal government that turns its back on crime and vandalism and homelessness. Those are all true. Portland suffers from mismanagement, and has for years now, and because of that lots of bad people are coming and lots of good people are leaving.
Say what you want about Portland’s politics and crime, but it IS a really pretty and charming place, despite a lot of the damage that’s been done by vandals and the homeless stain on the city. And on this drive, we’re going to take a tour through a lot of downtown Portland. We’re lucky, because the day I chose this drive was a nice one. It was evening in la...

Downtown Portland: The good, the bad and the arts
At the heart of downtown Portland are the arts organizations, many of them struggling to stay afloat as the area's bad reputation turns patrons away. The perception of downtown as unsafe has been plaguing the theaters and concert halls even as it becomes more expensive to put those shows on. But, there are some indications that the arts actually could be downtown Portland's saving grace.

It was evening in late October, right when the city’s maple trees were beginning to fall, creating a neat orange carpet.
Now I know you came to see the homeless tents, and we'll get to that part and we'll see the part of town that's in tatters from the looting too. But I have to say, while driving around downtown Portland I was surprised that the city wasn’t as destroyed or chaotic or overrun with tents like I had thought it would be. Oh I mean it was a thing, but it wasn’t as BAD as you hear about on the news. At least when I was here.
On this drive you’ll see a lot of windows broken out and graffiti and homeless people. But Portland has had some time to recover from the seemingly endless protests, where a holes battled with the cops and ruined a big chunk of downtown. The city is also actively trying to clean up all the bum poop and the needles and has begun to push some of the homeless encampments out of downtown and into surrounding areas.
Here’s where all the rioting happens that you see on TV. Based on news reports, you’d think that the whole city was up in flames and gutted out. But it’s actually just in one small part of downtown that’s about 5 blocks long. And until there’s another overreaction to something that happens here, this riot zone is pretty peaceful and quiet. Too bad it can’t stay this way all the time, but vandals and criminals and idiots can’t seem to remain civil. They’ll jack this part of town up again, sadly.
This is where a big part of the homeless gather downtown. It’s in an area off of Burnside, near Portland’s Chinatown. These blocks and blocks of downtown have been overtaken by tents, and it's an area that kind of ruins a whole section of downtown. When I was here, it was all mostly contained to one area.
Don’t get me wrong - the homeless spill out into the surrounding blocks and leave trash everywhere and harass people and cause issues. And almost all bathrooms in the area have a keypad to get in to prevent homeless people from using area bathrooms to do what homeless people do in there. But it’s not really that dangerous here in downtown’s tent city. At least to me. Sure it looks bad, but I walked around in this area at night and it was actually pretty quiet. It was like the homeless people were all given sedatives or something. And the maple leaves on the sidewalk certainly helped to cover up a lot of the grimy homeless mess, too.
You can see a lot more of this in another video I did that only covered Portland’s homeless problem. And when you drive around into other parts of the city, it’s clear that it is a BIG
problem.
