Amahl and the Night Visitors 1964 recorded 1963
This is the final NBC/Hallmark Hall of Fame broadcast of the Christmas opera. "Amahl" had been a TV tradition since its original live broadcast on Christmas Eve of 1951, Each broadcast was presented live. This was the first time the show was preserved using the new video tape system. NBC re-broadcast this presentation several times. However, because this production was put together without the composer's input, Menotti withdrew the video once the rights reverted back to him, and this presentation, with Marha King as the Mother and Kurt Yaghjian as Amahl, has not been seen since. No copyright infringement as this is in the public domain.

This version was produced mostly in a set in London with some scenes in Israel. It has an all star cast of Teresa Stratas, Robert Sapolsky, Giorgio Tozzi, Willard White, Nico Castel, Michael Lewis and was conducted by Jesus Lopez-Cobos. The VHS tape was off color and too dark which had to be corrected. Some smearing could not be easily fixed. The audio was recorded in mono. The production was under the supervision of the compose Gian Carlo Menotti, the composer and librettist. A copy of the introduction to the original 1951 broadcast by Menotti is included at the end.
The king’s costuming resembles the Bosh Adoration of the Magi which inspired this production. Stratas was known as a superb singing actress and she is true to form here. Nico Castel was wonderful in comic role as King Kaspar. Since it was not a live production the orchestra and singing were recorded separately from the video.
This production was made on film. The US VHS tape is an old conversion from film which has lots of problems including severe ghosting. While this doesn't cause problems in most of the video because of the static nature of many scenes, it does smear fast action such as the dancing. With modern digital technology it may be possible to get a much clearer version if the original film still exists. Normally films are telecined with 3 perfect progressive frames and 2 interlaced frames to convert from 24fps to 30fps by adding an one extra frame to every 4. The VHS copy has interlacing all the time with ghosting of the previous frame on 3/5 of the interlaced half frames. This copy still has ghosting with imperfect detelecining.

Place: Near Bethlehem.
Time: The first century, just after the birth of Christ
Amahl, a disabled boy, has a problem with telling tall tales. He is sitting outside playing his shepherd's pipe when his mother calls for him ("Amahl! Amahl!"). After much persuasion, he enters the house but his mother does not believe him when he tells her there is an amazing star "as big as a window" outside over their roof ("O Mother You Should Go Out and See"; "Stop Bothering Me!").
Later that night, Amahl's mother weeps, praying that Amahl not become a beggar ("Don't Cry Mother Dear"). After bedtime ("From Far Away We Come"), there is a knock at the door and the mother tells Amahl to go see who it is ("Amahl ... Yes Mother!"). He is amazed when he sees three splendidly dressed kings (the Magi). At first the mother does not believe Amahl, but when she goes to the door to see for herself, she is stunned. The Three Kings tell the mother and Amahl they are on a long journey to give gifts to a wondrous Child and they would like to rest at their house, to which the mother agrees ("Good Evening!"; "Come In!"), saying that all she can offer is "a cold fireplace and a bed of straw".
Amahl then talks with King Kaspar, who is childlike, eccentric, and a bit deaf. Kaspar shows Amahl his box of magic stones, beads, and licorice, and offers Amahl some of the candy ("Are You a Real King?"; "This is My Box"). The mother returns from fetching firewood and tells Amahl to stop bothering the kings ("Amahl, I Told You Not to Be a Nuisance!"). He defends himself, saying "They kept asking me questions," when of course it has in fact been Amahl asking the kings questions. Amahl is told to go fetch the neighbors ("All These Beautiful Things"; "Have You Seen a Child?") so the kings may be fed and entertained properly ("Shepherds! Shepherds!"; "Emily! Emily"; "Olives and Quinces"; "Dance of the Shepherds").
After the neighbors have left and the kings are resting, the mother attempts to steal for her son some of the kings' gold that was meant for the Christ Child ("All That Gold"). She is thwarted by the kings' page ("Thief! Thief!"). When Amahl wakes to find the page grabbing his mother, he attacks him ("Don't You Dare!"). Seeing Amahl's defense of his mother and understanding the motives for the attempted theft, King Melchior says she may keep the gold as the Holy Child will not need earthly power or wealth to build his kingdom ("Oh, Woman, You Can Keep That Gold"). The mother says she has waited all her life for such a king and asks the kings to take back the gold. She wishes to send a gift but has nothing to send. Amahl, too, has nothing to give the Child except his crutch ("Oh, No, Wait"). When he offers it to the kings, his leg is miraculously healed ("I Walk, Mother"). With permission from his mother, he leaves with the kings to see the Child and give his crutch in thanks for being healed.

This is a new restoration as of 2020 by J. Clement. This version was produced mostly in a set in London in 1979 with some scenes in Israel. It has an all star cast of:
Teresa Stratas as the mother
Robert Sapolsky as Amahl
Giorgio Tozzi as King Melchior
Willard White as King Balthazar
Nico Castel as King Kaspar
Michael Lewis as the Page
Conducted by Jesus Lopez-Cobos
Philharmonia orchestra & Ambrosian Chorus
The VHS tape was off color and too dark which had to be corrected. The audio was recorded in mono. The production was under the supervision of Gian Carlo Menotti, the composer and librettist. A copy of the introduction to the original 1951 broadcast by Menotti is included at the end. The king’s costuming resembles the Bosh painting Adoration of the Magi which inspired this production. Stratas was known as a superb singing actress and she is true to form here. Nico Castel was wonderful in the comic role as King Kaspar. Sapolsky was an enthusiastic Amahl. Menotti made some changes to his libretto and added new music for the shepherds gathering scene. Opera composers have often changed their works over time. The shepherd’s costumes and the house interior are all in realistic earth tones, but the kings are garbed in Technicolor robes. This new restoration is brighter with smoother motion and clearer detail.
Since it was not a live production, the audio was recorded separately from the action. This production was made on film. The US VHS tape is an old conversion from film which has lots of problems including severe ghosting. It smears fast action such as the dancing. Using Avisynth it was possible to extract a 24fps copy of the original movie with only some slight ghosting in a few scenes frames. Unfortunately the method caused some flickering of details in a few scenes. The film spots were smeared across several frames, but frame by frame editing removed most of them along with small tape problems. A tape glitch in the middle had to have extensive editing to make it unobvious. While it is not possible to upscale to a true HD version, this copy has increased crispness which gives some HD impression.
Normally films are telecined with 3 perfect progressive frames and 2 interlaced frames to convert from 24fps to 30fps by adding one extra frame to every 4. The VHS copy has interlacing all the time with ghosting of the previous frame on 3/5 of the interlaced half frames. This looked OK on the old SD TVs, but is very smudgy on HD sets. It is hoped that in the future the original film can be properly digitized for Blu-Ray to yield a much better copy.
