The album spawned many singles and radio hits, including, 'My Only', 'Death Goes To Disco', 'Loner', 'Our Song', 'Going Away', 'Taking Over', and, most recently, 'All For You' (most songs from the album are in fact released as a single).
Always and Never went Gold after only a week of release and debuted to place number 5 on the RIANZNew Zealand Top 40 Albums Chart. From then on, the album stayed in the Top 40 for 5 weeks (from 30 January until 27 February).
New Zealandcritics took notice of the tight riffs and hooks, wide range of subject matter, and musical diversity (the album included fast, punk songs, as well as more mature-sounding songs that deal with themes such as death).
Joel Little, the lead singer, said, when asked about the subject matter of the album:
"I don’t know, it’s not always about what’s pissing us off, just what we’re feeling at the time. Our earlier singles were more about things you care about when you’re 18, like not being able to get a girlfriend or whatever, going to parties and stuff. As you get a bit older you explore different themes. The new album is a bit of a wide range, there’s some happier party kinda tunes, then there’s some serious ones about like people who have died and that kind of thing. I think that if you just write about what’s going on in your life, there’s always gonna be someone out there that can relate, because we all go through some of the same things."
Most of Coheed and Cambria's albums are concept albums based on a science fiction storyline called The Amory Wars, a series written by Claudio Sanchez, which has been transcribed into a series of comic books as well as a full-length novel. The band has released eight studio albums, three live albums, and several special-edition releases. Their most recent release, The Color Before the Sun, is the band's first non-conceptual album since their inception. It reached #10 on the Billboard 200 while its predecessors The Aftermath:Descension; Year of the Black Rainbow and Good Apollo, I'm a Burning Star all reached the top 10.
The Amory Wars, originally titled The Bag.On.Line Adventures, is an ongoing series of comic books written by Coheed and Cambria frontman Claudio Sanchez and published by Evil Ink Comics. The story of The Amory Wars is also the focus of the band's music. Each studio album released by the band (with the exception of The Color Before the Sun) tells a chapter in the science fiction saga originally narrated by Sanchez's lyrics. Many individual songs on these albums (e.g., "The Crowing," "Everything Evil," "Three Evils") use a particular song structure known as "terminally climactic form" in order to depict a particularly violent action from the comic books once in a pivotal moment only heard at the song's ending.

The Lying Lies & Dirty Secrets Of Miss Erica Court
by: Coheed & Cambria
They move too fast to be words behind your teeth The give and go of most of your memories But I'm not the one that they need pray for If I've got it all then what does do Leave it alone Oh that once little boy we used to know Are you willing... well? Help!!! Now off to the hell your God has sold To find That never again will you rely On the words of your friends In the unwritten end For when you go they won't be following Now sell all your friends For the unwritten end Cause when you go they won't be following him I'll move the knife to show you of my cut With the worst of truth from here I drew no blood So you're not as real just what I thought up You're just a page I'll burn from a book That has nothing to show Of that once little boy we used to know Am I killing you? Help!!! Now off to the hell your God has sold To find That never again will you rely On the words of your friends In the unwritten end For when you go they won't be following Now sell all your friends For the unwritten end Cause when you go they won't be following No, no, I said "When you go they won't be following" Whoa, no, I said "When you go they won't be following him" Believer... believe it or not you'll know When it ends and how it goes
