The World of Alternative Investing
In this episode, we dive into alternative assets. Alternatives have seen incredible growth in the last decade, and have provided new strategies for investing in public and private markets, as well as better ways to generate alpha, income and diversification in traditional stock and bond portfolios. There are many kinds of alternative assets, and all have specific benefits and risks that require investors to understand each of them individually. Alternatives have also become much more accessible, and the growth of their overall asset size increasingly means that all investors—regardless of whether they’re actually invested or not—need to know what is happening in alternative markets.

Theme: Real Estate | Is warehousing the hottest investment in India?
In this episode of the State of Economy Podcast, businessline's Abhishek Law speaks with Anshul Singhal, Managing Director of Welspun One, an integrated fund and development management platform pioneering India's first warehousing-focused alternative investment fund.
The podcast begins with discussing about India's rapidly expanding warehousing market. Singhal provides a comprehensive overview of the market, highlighting the impressive 15-19% CAGR in demand, and suggests that the real numbers, especially in Tier 2, 3, and 4 cities, could be closer to a staggering 25%.
He discusses the projected growth of the real estate sector, from $300 billion to a trillion by 2030, and how warehousing plays a crucial role in this expansion. Singhal emphasises the connection between consumer beha...

Assets which, as the name suggests, represent an alternative to let's say the S&P 500 and Treasuries. From "old school" assets like art and agriculture equipment to digital assets and even education-oriented assets, there is no shortage of options.

After all, even one investment grade work of art is not within reach for the average investor, so fractional ownership solutions such as the ones Hedonova offers are here to fill this void. In a nutshell, a budget of only $5,000 is enough to gain exposure to over 12 alternative assets.
For more info, head on over to their website, with the URL being:

What percentage of your net worth you allocate toward alternative investments is, of course, up to you. The main takeaway is simply that in an increasingly complex economic and financial landscape, thinking outside the box makes perfect sense. And, I might add, may very well end up becoming a necessity.

In this video I'll discuss the fundamentals of alternative investments such as hedge funds, private equity, venture capital, and others.
Video that explains what an Accredited Investor is:
https://www.youtube.com/shorts/O4j0VdysD9s
Alternative investments are investments that do not fall neatly into the conventional pre-packaged stocks, bonds, and cash categories.
Why invest in these? For two reasons. First are the significant returns that these types of investments can bring, and second, the diversification they can offer to a portfolio.
There are also a few down sides to alternative investments. For one thing, they are sometimes subject to a less clear legal structure. Some of these investments have no requirement to register with the SEC and receive little to no oversight. This, in turn, makes them more prone to scams and fraud than conventional investments. Many alternative investments are also not exactly liquid, which just means they can be difficult to quickly sell and turn back into cash, and sometimes also difficult to valuate properly as compared to stocks and bonds.
Alternative Investment #1:
A hedge fund is a collection of money pooled from accredited investors. The fund is usually privately set up by a money manager and organized as a limited partnership or an LLC. Once set up and funded, the hedge fund can invest in publicly traded assets, such as stocks, bonds, currencies, commodities, and derivatives. It can also invest in just about anything else as guided by its stated investment strategy and style.
Alternative Investment #2:
This is another major class of alternative investments and is essentially private money for purposes of investment. More specifically, private equity, or PE, is a pooled investment fund, operated by a private equity investment management company, and the fund’s investing goals are to buy and restructure distressed companies that are not publicly traded.
Alternative Investment #3:
The third major category of alternative investments, and that is venture capital, or VC. VC is somewhat similar to private equity but with a focus on cultivating startup companies, not turning around existing ones.
Alternative Investment #4:
These five items are antiques, art, collectibles, rare coins, and wine. They’re all grouped together for convenience, as all five have rather similar pros and cons. In general, are all risky and difficult alternative investments to specialize in, but can appreciate and give significant returns in some cases.

Singhal emphasises the connection between consumer behaviour and warehousing demand, explaining how the rise of e-commerce, quick commerce, and omni-channel retail has fueled the need for efficient logistics solutions.
The conversation also touches upon the Indian budget and its impact on the warehousing sector. Singhal shares his positive outlook on the budget's investment-friendly reforms, particularly those related to infrastructure spending, and simplified land acquisition.
He addresses concerns about flattish infrastructure investment numbers, explaining that warehousing's unique position between infrastructure and real estate allows it to adapt to market fluctuations.
Also, Singhal discusses the ease of raising funds for warehousing projects in India, citing the impressive $10 billion invested in the sector over the past three to five years, and reveals Welspun One's plans to double its portfolio and raise ₹4,000 crore through a mix of international and domestic funds. Tune in to gain valuable insights into this booming sector and understand how warehousing is shaping the future of Indian business.
