Alpha is the second studio album by Britishrock band Asia, released in 1983. It was certified Platinum in the United States, eventually selling close to two million copies.
Released one year before the departure of guitarist Steve Howe, Alpha was the last album with the band's original line-up until 2008's Phoenix, after the original members reunited in 2006, and the last album with Howe until Aqua in 1992.
Writing and recording
Alpha is dominated by the songwriting tandem of John Wetton and Geoff Downes. All the tracks on the album are written by Wetton/Downes, except for "The Smile Has Left Your Eyes", by Wetton only. Steve Howe, guitarist and a key songwriting contributor on the debut album, was left out due to reasons not entirely clear. His only songwriting credit was for "Lyin' to Yourself" (Wetton/Howe), the B-side of the single "The Smile Has Left Your Eyes".
ALPHA or alpha-ethyl-3,4-methylenedioxybenzylamine, is a lesser-known psychedelic drug and a substituted benzylamine. It is also the benzylamine analogue of MDA. ALPHA was first synthesized by Alexander Shulgin. In his book PIHKAL (Phenethylamines I Have Known and Loved) in the MDA page, the threshold dosage is listed as 10 mg. At mild threshold dosages (around 10mg) there are eyes-closed "dreams" with some body tingling, at higher doses (up to 140mg) was reported to produce a pleasant, positive feeling. This compound is not anoretic at any dose. It lasts about 3 hours. Very little data exists about the pharmacological properties, metabolism, and toxicity of ALPHA.
The original meaning of this character was like NOP—when sent to a printer or a terminal, it does nothing (some terminals, however, incorrectly display it as space). When electromechanical teleprinters were used as computer output devices, one or more null characters were sent at the end of each printed line to allow time for the mechanism to return to the first printing position on the next line. On punched tape, the character is represented with no holes at all, so a new unpunched tape is initially filled with null characters, and often text could be "inserted" at a reserved space of null characters by punching the new characters into the tape over the nulls.
Today the character has much more significance in C and its derivatives and in many data formats, where it serves as a reserved character used to signify the end of a string, often called a null-terminated string. This allows the string to be any length with only the overhead of one byte; the alternative of storing a count requires either a string length limit of 255 or an overhead of more than one byte (there are other advantages/disadvantages described under null-terminated string).
"Control" is the second North American single released from alternative rock band Garbage's fifth studio album, Not Your Kind of People, and was sent to radio stations across United States in October 2012. The band mastered a radio version of the song for airplay featuring a third chorus in place of the breakdown that marks the album version of the song. Garbage later pressed a limited edition 7" vinyl single for "Control" and released it through their website. It was backed with a remix of the lead single "Blood for Poppies".
"Control" is about giving up any control in your life, surrendering yourself to whatever is going on," explained Shirley Manson, "...and committing yourself to it in that moment." The band were inspired by the song "When the Levee Breaks" by Led Zeppelin and used it as a reference point to bring guitars into the mix and seeing how far they could push their sound and channel the groove. "Control" features a harmonica part performed by Butch Vig.
Metro Station is the eponymously titled debut length album by pop band Metro Station. The album was released on September 18, 2007 under Columbia/Red Ink.
Four singles were released from the album; "Shake It" and "Seventeen Forever" charted on the Billboard Hot 100. The album debuted at #189 on the U.S. Billboard 200, but reached a peak of #39 in June 2008. The single "Shake It" was certified Platinum in 2008. Since its release, Metro Station has sold approximately 400,000 copies in the United States.
The album was released in the UK on March 30, 2009. The version of the album released in the UK contains 2 exclusive bonus tracks including a brand new track, "After the Fall". The first UK single, "Shake It", was released a week before, on March 23, 2009.
"No Man's Land" makes heavy use of sitar. "Cinnamon Road" also utilizes sitar, but with a conventional pop music structure. The longest track, "Sphinx Lightning"', recapitulates every style explored by Tangerine Dream over the previous decade.
The album title refers to Hyperborea, a mythical, idyllic land in the Ancient Greek tradition, supposedly located far to the north of Thrace and where it was claimed the sun shone twenty-four hours a day.
In the 90's the Alpha processor was one of the most powerful CPUs you could lay your hands on. With a number of operating systems available for it, from both DEC (VMS, Tru64) and 3rd parties. It even have the most successful none x86 port of Windows NT. For many the Alpha was then next machine up if their x86 PC just did not have the CPU power they needed.
BN: In the intro I say the PDP-11 is 8bit, its not its 16bit. That was a slip of the tongue, I even wrote 16bit in my script, is that what I said no, did I spot it after watching through the video many many times, no.

Last of the DEC Alpha’s
A bit on computer history this time. Although this DS10 computer is badged Compaq it was a Digital Equipment Corporation design (DEC) using it Alpha processors. Compaq took over the DECs PC business in 1998 but it wasn’t long before HP picked up both. The Alpha processor held the speed record for a RISC processor at the time and was used in machines that could support DECs own operating system VMS, but also UNIX and Windows NT. Unlike Microsoft who clamed NT stood for 'New Technology', DEC circles claimed it was the 3 next letters in the alphabet from VMS becoming 'WNT' reflecting the design input from DEC.
There is a bonus end to the video on an unusual mouse used by DEC on earlier VAX machines.

I have not yet seen other videos about this Alpha, so I decided to share some experiences today.
