Almoravid Empire | 1035CE – 1121CE
Happy Holidays, everyone!
The Muslims of Al Andalus were in trouble. The Christians to the north were constantly at war with them. Toledo had fallen. All the Ta’ifas were within reach. Their doom was inevitable. For a moment, it looked like Muslims were about to be expelled from Spain. However, to the south, a new empire was emerging. A religious movement born in the hot desert of Northern Africa that would become a force to resist the Christian advance in Spain.
Additional Facts:

The fact that “at the start of the empire, taxes were low but the revenues were high” and “at the end of the empire, the taxes were high but the revenues were low” was written about by Ibn Khaldun which was read by Ronald Reagan, who got a huge boner from it.

FULL DOCUMENTARY Of The Almoravids (original)
This is Part 1 of our Full Documentary Series on The Berber (Amazigh) Almoravids (Al Murabitun). They started out as a need for islamic revival within moroccan tribes. It was a purely religious movement that picked up steam in the 1040s and started to attract more and more followers. By 1060, they unified most tribes in North West Africa. In 1085, the Kings of the Taifas, the small city-states in Al Andalus call upon them for help, which kicks off a 20 year process of RE-reconquista (basically taking back the territorial gains made by the Christians in their own reconquista)
From defeating the Kingdom of Buraghwata run by a Fake Prophet, to delaying the Reconquista by some 400 years, this Muslim dynasty, ran by Yusuf Ibn Tashfin for 46 years, had a fascinating run.

1)
The fact that “at the start of the empire, taxes were low but the revenues were high” and “at the end of the empire, the taxes were high but the revenues were low” was written about by Ibn Khaldun which was read by Ronald Reagan, who got a huge boner from it.
2)
In my last episode, I accidentally said that Alfonso took Zaragoza after Toledo but in fact, he had only besieged the castle and hadn’t reduced it yet. That was my mistake and I apologize for it.

At the end of the 11th century, a group of Berber warriors emerged from the fringes of the Sahara Desert to assert their power over all of Morocco. Known as the Almoravid’s, they would go on to conquer much of al-Andalus, aka Muslim Iberia. An African power conquering Europe, you don’t expect to hear that everyday! This is the Almoravid Invasion of Iberia!

The Almoravid Empire: The Rise and Legacy of a Berber Islamic Dynasty
Almoravid Empire, Berber, Islamic dynasty, North Africa, Iberian Peninsula, Abdallah ibn Yasin, Sahara Desert, military prowess, territorial expansion, Morocco,...
Almoravid Empire, Berber, Islamic dynasty, North Africa, Iberian Peninsula, Abdallah ibn Yasin, Sahara Desert, military prowess, territorial expansion, Morocco, Senegal, Mali, Spain, Portugal, Mauritania, history, rise, legacy, cultural impact, religious zeal, Islamic faith, military conquests, empire building, historical significance.
The Almoravid Empire was a fascinating and influential Berber-based Islamic dynasty that left an indelible mark on the history of North Africa and the Iberian Peninsula. Founded in 1040 CE by the visionary Berber religious leader Abdallah ibn Yasin, the Almoravids began as a coalition of Berber tribes hailing from the vast Sahara Desert region. Driven by a zealous commitment to spreading the Islamic faith and expanding their territorial influence, they embarked on a journey that would shape the course of history for over a century.
At its zenith, the Almoravid Empire's dominion spanned vast territories, encompassing modern-day Morocco, Western Sahara, Senegal, Mali, Spain, Portugal, and Mauritania. This extensive empire was a result of their military prowess, strategic alliances, and remarkable organizational skills. The Almoravids' military might was characterized by their innovative tactics and the skilled use of cavalry, allowing them to triumph over adversaries and consolidate their rule.
One of the most remarkable aspects of the Almoravid Empire was their commitment to their Islamic faith. As fervent advocates of orthodox Sunni Islam, they implemented strict adherence to religious principles across their domains. Their religious zeal inspired cultural and architectural achievements, evident in the construction of grand mosques and other religious structures.
The Almoravid Empire also played a crucial role in shaping trade and commerce in the region. Their control over strategic trade routes facilitated the movement of goods and ideas, fostering cultural exchange and economic prosperity. The city of Marrakesh, founded by the Almoravid ruler Yusuf ibn Tashfin, became a vibrant center of trade, learning, and art during this era.
As with many empires, the Almoravids faced their share of challenges and eventual decline. Internal struggles and the rise of rival dynasties gradually weakened their grip on power. The rise of the Almohad Dynasty in the 12th century marked the beginning of the Almoravid Empire's decline.
Nevertheless, the legacy of the Almoravid Empire lives on. Their influence on North African and Iberian history left lasting impressions on culture, architecture, and the spread of Islam. The Almoravids' legacy continues to be a subject of interest and study, shedding light on the remarkable achievements of this Berber Islamic dynasty that shaped the course of history in the medieval period.
