All Saints Day Pep Talk
What does a triathlon have to do with the Communion of Saints? Fr. Mike Schmitz draws parallels between his experience of completing a triathlon and the believer’s experience of journeying to heaven. In our spiritual race, those who have gone before us are encouraging us at every turn. Fr. Mike reminds us that if we find ourselves struggling in this journey, we should remember that we are surrounded by “a cloud of witnesses” that is more impressive than a stadium filled with sports fans.

All Saints Day - a Pagan Celebration
The origin of this holiday can be traced thousands of years back before the days of Roman Catholic Christianity, to the ancient Celts and their priests, the Druids.
The Druids believed that people needed to be cleansed after they died. The souls of the departed were transferred by magic to the bodies of animals.
"During the night of October 31, the enchanted souls were freed by the Druid god, Samhain [the god of the dead], and taken together into the Druid heaven. This festival was always accompanied by animal and sometimes human sacrifices and linked with all kinds of magic".
"In spite of the coming of the Roman Catholic empire, this Pagan festival continued to be observed until the sixth century. Gregory the Great (A.D. 540-604) advised the Archbishop of Canterbury to retain the hithe...

Samhain and the Origins of Halloween (As Well As All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day)
Halloween ! A festival whose roots are often said to be in the gaelic feast of Samhain (pronounce sow-in, or be mocked!), be it by horror movies or a lot of people on the internet -- which as we know are the most trustworthy sources of knowledge! But is it true ? Isn't Halloween simply the eve of All Saints Day ?
In this video (our first in english!), Camille, Antoine and Lays (well, Antoine's voice) are trying to figure out if what we can gather from medieval litterature and modern folklore can help us discern the christian from the pagan and scholarly myth from history.

All Saints’ Day is a solemn holy day of the Catholic Church celebrated annually on November 1. The day is dedicated to the saints of the Church, that is, all those who have attained heaven. It should not be confused with All Souls’ Day, which is observed on November 2 and is dedicated to those who have died and not yet reached heaven.
Although millions, or perhaps even billions, of people, may already be saints, All Saints’ Day observances tend to focus on known saints --that is those recognized in the canon of the saints by the Catholic Church.
Generally, All Saints ’ Day is a Catholic Holy Day of Obligation, meaning all Catholics are required to attend Mass on that day, unless they have an excellent excuse, such as serious illness.
Celebrations and customs vary around the world. In the United States, children go out trick-or-treating for candy the night before, while Catholics attend the Mass the following day. In Spain, Mexico and Portugal, offerings are often left for the dead. Across Western Europe, people visit graves and leave offerings of flowers, and in Eastern Europe, they light candles on the graves at night. In the Philippines, families paint and repair graves of their loved ones.
These celebrations often blur the distinction between All Saints' Day, which is dedicated to those who are in heaven, and All Souls' Day, which is dedicated for all those who have died.
In Mexico, the Day of the Dead holy days extend from October 31 through November 2. This holiday has spread in popularity into the United States and across latin America. It's generally celebrated from October 31 through November 2, and it coincides with the American Holloween holiday and the Catholic holy days
However, it's important to remember these basic facts:
Halloween is a secular holiday that comes the night before All Saints' Day.
All Saints' Day is on November 1, and it is a Holy Day of Obligation.
All Souls' Day in on November 2, and it is NOT a Holy Day of Obligation.
