(23 May 2016) With results in the Austrian presidential elections still too close to call on May 22nd 2016, the mood was celebratory at the right-wing Freedom Party post-election event at Vienna's Prater.
Freedom Party candidate Norbert Hofer told his supporters they had won "in any case" even if they did not come out on top after the counting of nearly 700,000 absentee ballots.
The direct votes gave Hofer 51.9 percent to 48.1 percent for Alexander Van der Bellen, a Greens politician running as an independent and standing for a message that sharply contrasts with Hofer's anti-immigrant and Eurosceptic rhetoric.
But final projections that included still-to-be-counted absentee ballots put each at 50 percent with Van der Bellen narrowly ahead.

Left-leaning candidate Alexander Van der Bellen won the election to become Austrian president on May 23rd, but his right-wing rival was only narrowly behind, a result that reflects the growing strength of Europe's anti-EU political movements.
Right-winger Norbert Hofer had been narrowly ahead of Van der Bellen, a former Green party leader running as an independent, after the counting of votes cast on May 22nd.
But around 700,000 absentee ballots still remained to be counted May 23rd, and those numbers swung the victory to Van der Bellen.
Interior Minister Wolfgang Sobotka said Van der Bellen collected 50.3 percent of the votes compared with 49.7 percent for Hofer of the Freedom Party.
Only a little more than 31,000 votes separated the two, out of more than 4.6 million ballots cast.

In order to win Hofer needs at least 40 percent of the absentee ballots which will be counted on May 23rd.
