Ancient City of Aleppo (UNESCO/NHK)
Located at the crossroads of several trade routes from the 2nd millennium B.C., Aleppo was ruled successively by the Hittites, Assyrians, Arabs, Mongols, Mamelukes and Ottomans. The 13th-century citadel, 12th-century Great Mosque and various 17th-century madrasas, palaces, caravanserais and hammams all form part of the city's cohesive, unique urban fabric, now threatened by overpopulation.

Those streets they look like a wasteland
I stop and wonder, do we even care?

The History of Aleppo during the Bronze Age
In this program we'll take a look at some of the earliest recorded history of one of the world's longest continuously occupied cities - Aleppo (Halab). For much of the Bronze Age, Aleppo was the capital of the wealthy and powerful kingdom of Yamhad. Fending off attacks from Shamshi-Adad's Kingdom of Upper Mesopotamia, it eventually succumbed to the might of the Hittite Empire, only to rise again centuries later. Along with Aleppo's most ancient history, we'll also take a look at artwork from the period.

► Thank you to Rami from Syrian Guides: https://syrianguides.com/
Aleppo Bab Al Ahmar - Located on the outside of Aleppo Citadel you’ll find this traditional Syrian restaurant that specializes in breakfast dishes. Rami and I had a breakfast feast to begin our day with some of the Levantine food classics like hummus and foul, and a special dish called Maamounieh. Total price - 250,000 SYP ($16.66) for everything
After breakfast we continued to visit the Aleppo Citadel and Al-Madina Souq. Although so much was destroyed, it’s amazing to see that Aleppo is coming back to life, and people are rebuilding. Within the winding alleys of the market we tried a simple falafel, which was fantastic, but just a start to the next falafel we’d be trying later in the afternoon. We also visited an 800 year old soup factory at Jebeili Soap Factory and ate local Aleppo Syrian kebabs at Abu Dibo Kebab.
Cordoba Restaurant (https://maps.app.goo.gl/PsaMAmhjF4Xn72qx5) - One of the greatest restaurants in Aleppo, Syria is Cordoba, famous for their Aleppo cuisine, and especially for serving of the best versions of Kebab karaz - Aleppo sour cherry kebab. Total price - 470,000 SYP ($31.33) for everything
Amo Hamido Falafel (https://maps.app.goo.gl/zgmSKmLZSdP46Lug9) - Next up we went to what is probably the most famous and popular Syrian street food spot in Aleppo, known for their giant falafel sandwiches! Price - 15,000 SYP ($1) per sandwich
Sujuk Sandwich (https://maps.app.goo.gl/LKfNJpLVrrNBxtg97) - We continued on this Syrian street food tour in Aleppo to eat an Armenian sujuk sandwich, which was extremely tasty. Price - 17,000 SYP ($1.13) per sandwich
Abu Hagob Restaurant - Finally we had a dinner at a legendary Armenian Syrian restaurant where they made a meal of many small plates to eat with arak. The kibbeh nayyeh, raw minced lamb and bulgur, was especially delicious. Total price - 250,000 SYP ($16.66) for everything
Aleppo, Syria is and always has been a food capital of the world!

Aleppo (x3)
Aleppo Living..
Those streets they look like a wasteland
I stop and wonder, do we even care?
They got no where to run home to, they got no one that they can call
Their world is broken, only God knows how they're coping
But we pretend that we can't see them
The world turns and our hearts get colder
What can I do I'm just a one man soldier?
Carry on watching TV on the sofa
Tell ourselves it'll soon be over
Cos we were supposed to be there for them
Lord, where did the Ummah go?
They were crying out there for us
But that's the life that they live their in Aleppo
Knee deep in Aleppo
Their sleeping in Aleppo..
Aleppo
Aleppo Living.. (x2)
I say these words so you can see, the Muslims dropped the ball.
Those were all of our family, but we didn't wanna know..
How dare we fight bout issues concerning you & me
Cos when that cookie crumbled, we had no unity
But we gotta be willing to change, cos lord knows this will happen on another day
Yes we gotta be willing to change, cos lord knows this will happen on another day
But what's a change gonna do if it's not today
When we ain't got time to stop and pray
Meanwhile another home got bombed today..
But that's the life that they live their in Aleppo
They're Knee deep in Aleppo
They're sleeping in Aleppo..
Aleppo (x2)
Gunshots every night in Aleppo
Another plane in the sky in Aleppo
Every day is a fight in Aleppo
Oh oh oh, Aleppo
Ya Allah send peace to Aleppo
Let everyone eat in Aleppo
We don't no screams from Aleppo
Oh oh oh, Aleppo living..

In this program we'll take a look at some of the earliest recorded history of one of the world's longest continuously occupied cities - Aleppo (Halab). For much of the Bronze Age, Aleppo was the capital of the wealthy and powerful kingdom of Yamhad. Fending off attacks from Shamshi-Adad's Kingdom of Upper Mesopotamia, it eventually succumbed to the might of the Hittite Empire, only to rise again centuries later. Along with Aleppo's most ancient history, we'll also take a look at artwork from the period.

Tutorial 2: Extracting Information from Documents
Tutorial description: This workshop provides an introduction to information extraction for social science–techniques for identifying specific words, phrases, or pieces of information contained within documents. It focuses on two common techniques, named entity recognition and dependency parses, and shows how they can provide useful descriptive data about the civil war in Syria. The workshop uses the Python library spaCy, but no previous experience is needed beyond familiarity with Python.

Ancient Subversion: The Philistines and the Palestinians
Ethno and religio-centrism dominates the historiography of the Levant, and this has lead to deception and subversion.
But this subversion is not only a modern phenomenon. It has been going on for over 2000 years.
The Philistines, the namesake of the Palestinians, were a Canaanite tribe, and possibly even a member group of the multiethnic Phoenician Empire, which peaked during the time of the biblical narrative.
Efforts to subvert and demonize the Philistines continue to this day, but originated when the Hebrew Bible was authored, most notably during the reframing of the biblical historical narrative which took place during the Deuteronomistic Reform of the 6th and 7th centuries BCE.
These efforts are almost invariably linked to modern attempts to subvert the indigeneity and national...

A History of Islamism
The story seems relatively simple. We drop bombs, this reinforces anti-western stereotypes and provides fertile soil from which Jihadism grows. These current Western obsessions with foreign fighters and Jihadi expansionism are not new, and of course there is a deep intertwining of jihadism with Western interests, and thus our own sense of identity. So how are we to view what’s going on? And what import does this have for those interested in European, or ‘White’ identity?

Iraqi food making kebabs from lamb is the most popular street food
Kebab is a widely available food in Iraq and in general street food. It is prepared from minced lamb. In some places, lamb and beef are minced with fat using grilled skewers and grilled over charcoal or wood. In many countries, kebabs are called "grills". The origin of kebab is an Aramaic word. The origin of kebabs goes back to the famous Aleppo kitchen, where the people of Aleppo were the first to prepare kebabs. History records the people of Aleppo's fondness for many types of grills and their uniqueness with the types of luxurious kebabs that have spread in many countries. It has its own flavor in Iranian street food, for example, saffron is added to lamb and beef before grilling over charcoal. The varieties and seasoning methods of Turkish street food differ from city to city. There is...

The Battle of the Hydaspes was fought in 326 BC between Alexander the Great and King Porus of the Paurava kingdom on the banks of the Jhelum River (known to the Greeks as Hydaspes) in the Punjab region of the Indian subcontinent (modern-day Punjab, Pakistan). The battle resulted in a Greek victory and the surrender of Porus.[a] Large areas of the Punjab between the Hydaspes (Jhelum) and Hyphasis (Beas) rivers were absorbed into the Alexandrian Empire, and Porus was reinstated as a subordinate ruler.

MEMS COLLOQUIUM LECTURE
Michael D. Danti, Assistant Professor of Archaeology, Boston University; Consulting Scholar, University of Pennsylvania Museum; and Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London
Syria and Iraq are facing the worst cultural heritage crisis since the Second World War. Michael Danti's talk will address one of the greatest challenges: the cultural cleansing perpetrated by the so-called Islamic State (or ISIS) and the work of the American Schools of Oriental Research to safeguard cultural assets.
The American Schools of Oriental Research Cultural Heritage Initiatives (ASOR CHI) work with Syrians and Iraqis to safeguard cultural sites and objects from neglect, damage, destruction, and theft as part of a program developed with the U.S. Department of State. Among the many atrocities perpetrated by ISIS is the deliberate destructions of historic mosques, churches, schools, monasteries, and cemeteries, as well as numerous famous monuments at archaeological sites such as Palmyra, Nimrud, Nineveh, Hatra, and the Old City of Mosul. ISIS brazenly commits these war crimes to advance its radical ideology and gain global media exposure. At the same time, the organization funds its terrorist activities through the looting of cultural property from archaeological sites, museums, libraries, and private collections. Irreplaceable ancient and medieval heritage, embedded in the urban fabric and daily life of modern communities, is endangered as extremists erase cultural memory, manipulate cultural identity, and eliminate cultural diversity.
Bio:
Michael D. Danti is an archaeologist who specializes in the ancient Near East. His interests center on the emergence of complex societies, agropastoral economies, tribe-state relations and pastoral nomadic societies. He directs archaeological projects in Iraqi Kurdistan and Syria, focusing on the Bronze and Iron Ages. From 1991 to 2010, Dr. Danti’s research focused on the Early Bronze Age site of Tell es-Sweyhat near Raqqa and Aleppo on the Euphrates River. He is a principal investigator for the American Schools of Oriental Research's Cultural Heritage Initiatives (ASOR CHI). ASOR is an international, collaborative effort to respond to the destruction of cultural heritage in Syria and northern Iraq. Groups of concerned citizens in Syria and Iraq have been taking action, and ASOR's international team has formed alliances and partnerships with these groups.

These efforts are almost invariably linked to modern attempts to subvert the indigeneity and national identity of the Palestinians, thus justifying the Zionist takeover of Palestine in the 20th century, almost 2000 years after the Jews were largely expelled from the Levant region.

There is Orfali kebab in Urfa, Antakya kebab in Antakya, and Sultani kebab in Istanbul street food. Kebab in Syria in general and in Aleppo in particular is distinguished by its unique taste due to the quality of the luxurious Syrian lamb with a distinctive taste and because of the good pasture where the city of Al-Bab in Aleppo and the city is famous for its fertile pastures that produce sheep and cows with luxurious meat, where the meat of these sheep forms the backbone of most dishes In the Halabi kitchen, including the famous Aleppo kebab, where the people of Aleppo prepare it in many ways, either without additives. And the mint and the mixture is destroyed and it is called kebab al-khakhsh. Kebabs are spread in various countries of the world, especially in the Middle East countries such as Iraq, Turkey, Egypt, Greece, Syria, Jordan, Cyprus, Lebanon, Palestine and

The name kebab comes from the ancient Syrian Aramaic word "kababu", which means burning and charring. In the 14th century, the word was used to denote the method of grilling ground meat spherically in street food. The word shish kebab also refers to grilled cuts of meat that are grilled on a skewer (shish means skewer). In the Western world, the word is used to denote barbecue on skewers in street food, such as veggie kabob, which is a grilled vegetable, or corn-chicken kabob, which is minced chicken skewers topped with sweetened cornmeal that is grilled in street food.
mix it up
The mixture of kebabs in street food varies from country to country. In North American street food, roast lamb is covered in a sugary nutty sauce. In street food Greece and Turkey, kebabs are seasoned only with pepper and salt. In the street food of Lebanon, lightly greased lamb is purified to give it a special flavor and mixed with the meat. The Syrian street food is famous for the Aleppo kebab, which is very popular in many countries. The city of Aleppo is characterized by the types of Aleppo kebabs that are more and more diverse, and have their own mixture and distinctive delicious taste.
its types
Kebab or kofta, which is minced lamb meat with spices and some vegetables such as parsley and onions. In Lebanon, veal is mixed with lamb to impart a distinct creamy flavour.
Shish kebabs are meat cubes stacked on a skewer and grilled over charcoal. Vegetables such as onions, peppers or zucchini can be added. In Syria and Palestine (disambiguation) pieces of fat are added from the tail of the sheep (the game)
Vegetable kebab: It is a street food grill to cut vegetables such as zucchini, tomatoes, eggplant, onions and peppers of all kinds, red, yellow and green.

King led the 1955 Montgomery bus boycott and later became the first president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). As president of the SCLC, he then led an unsuccessful 1962 struggle against segregation in Albany, Georgia, and helped organize the nonviolent 1963 protests in Birmingham,
Alabama. He helped organize the 1963 March on Washington, where he delivered his famous "I Have a Dream" speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.
On October 14, 1964, King won the Nobel Peace Prize for combating racial inequality through nonviolent resistance. In 1965, he helped organize the Selma to Montgomery marches. In his final years, he expanded his focus to include opposition towards poverty, capitalism, ]
King was planning a national occupation of Washington, D.C., to be called the Poor People's Campaign, when he was assassinated on April 4 in Memphis, Tennessee. His death was followed by riots in many U.S. cities. Allegations that James Earl Ray, the man convicted of killing King, had been framed or acted in concert with government agents persisted for decades after the shooting.
King was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Gold Medal. Martin Luther King Jr. Day was established as a holiday in cities and states throughout the United States beginning in 1971; the holiday was enacted at the federal level by legislation signed by President Ronald Reagan in 1986. Hundreds of streets in the U.S. have been renamed in his honor, and a county in Washington was rededicated for him. The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., was dedicated in 2011.

The Battle of the Hydaspes was fought in 326 BC between
Alexander the Great and King Porus of the Paurava kingdom on the banks of the Jhelum River (known to the Greeks as Hydaspes) in the Punjab region of the Indian subcontinent (modern-day Punjab, Pakistan).

Alexander's decision to cross the monsoon-swollen river despite close Indian surveillance, in order to catch Porus's army in the flank, has been referred to as one of his "masterpieces".[21] Although victorious, it was also the most costly battle fought by the Macedonians.[22] The resistance put up by King Porus and his men won the respect of Alexander, who asked Porus to become one of his satraps.
The battle is historically significant for opening up the Indian subcontinent to Ancient Greek political (Seleucid, Greco-Bactrian, Indo-Greek) and cultural influences (Greco-Buddhist art), which continued to have an impact for many centuries.

Background
After Alexander defeated the last of the Achaemenid Empire's forces under Bessus and Spitamenes in 328 BC, he began a new campaign to further extend his empire towards India in 327 BC. After fortifying Bactria with 10,000 men, Alexander commenced his invasion of India through the Khyber Pass.[24] Whilst possessing a much larger army, at the battle, an estimated 40,000 infantry and 5,000 cavalry crossed the river in time to engage the enemy.[6] During this battle, Alexander suffered heavy losses compared to his earlier victories.
The primary Greek column entered the Khyber Pass, but a smaller force under the personal command of Alexander went through the northern route, taking the fortress of Aornos (modern-day Pir-Sar) along the way—a place of mythological significance to the Greeks as, according to legend, Herakles had failed to occupy it when he campaigned in India. Here, the Hindu clans of Hindu Kush gave Alexander's army the toughest opposition they had faced, but Alexander still emerged victorious, despite being outnumbered, depending on the source, somewhere between 3:1 and 5:1.[25]
In early spring of the next year, Alexander formed an alliance with Taxiles (also known as Ambhi Kumar), the King of Taxila. They combined their forces against Taxiles's neighbour, the King of Hydaspes, King Porus, who had chosen to spurn Alexander's command for him to surrender and was preparing for war.[26]
Motives
Alexander had to subdue King Porus in order to keep marching east.[citation needed] To leave such a strong opponent at his flanks would have endangered any further exploits. Alexander could not afford to show any weakness if he wanted to keep the loyalty of the already subdued Indian princes. Porus had to defend his kingdom and chose the perfect spot to check Alexander's advance. Although he lost the battle, he became the most successful recorded opponent of Alexander.[citation needed] According to historian Peter Green, Porus's performance in the battle out-classed both Memnon of Rhodes and Spitamenes.[25]
