The Beauty of Sovana in 1 Minute | Travel Italy #shorts
Originally settled by the Etruscans, Sovana fell to the Romans by the 3rd century BC. In the Middle Ages, Sovana became the base of the Aldobrandeschi family. Nowadays, the town is just one street, with the ruins of the Aldobrandeschi Citadel on one end, Piazza del Pretorio in the middle and the Sovana Cathedral at the other end. The bulge on which Sovana stands is surrounded by archeological sites of Ancient Etruscan necropoli.

Monumenti funebri arnolfiani per Luca Savelli (1266) e per Onorio IV Savelli con Vanna Aldobrandeschi (1288)
Roma, Basilica di San Maria in Ara Coeli - Cappella di San Francesco
Monumenti funebri della famiglia Savelli
Funerary Monumentf in the Savelli Chapel (now Chapel of Saint Franciscus),
attributed to Arnolfo di Cambio (c.1287)
- Tomba di Luca Savelli
the Roman senator Luca Savelli.
-Tomba di Giovanna Aldobrandeschi, le spoglie del figlio Giacomo, papa nel 1285-87 con il nome di Onorio IV - The tomb of Luca Savelli’s wife Giovanna (‘Vana’) Aldobrandeschi
Then there is the Savelli Chapel (actually the Chapel of Saint Franciscus), also on the right side. We have previously met the Savelli family (see Rome: Santa Sabina), which played an important role in medieval Roman politics. The tomb on the left in this chapel is the final resting place of the Roman senator Luca Savelli. The tomb is attributed to Arnolfo di Cambio (ca. 1240-1300/10), who used an ancient pagan sarcophagus as a base for Luca’s chest
The tomb of Luca Savelli’s wife Giovanna (‘Vana’) Aldobrandeschi is on the other side of the chapel. It has the coat of arms of the Aldobrandeschi family in the centre and that of the Savelli family on either side. You might be surprised to find the effigy of a man lying on top of the sarcophagus. In fact, the effigy does not belong here at all. It represents Pope Honorius IV (1285-1287), who was born Giacomo Savelli. Luca Savelli and Vana Aldobrandeschi were his parents. His tomb, also by Arnolfo di Cambio, was originally in Old Saint Peter’s Basilica. It was demolished when the old basilica was dismantled to make way for a splendid new church. The effigy survived, and apparently someone thought it appropriate to combine it with the tomb of the pope’s mother.

* Luca Savelli was a Roman senator who in 1234 sacked the Lateran. He was born in 1190, died in 1266, and was married to Vana Aldobrandeschi. Luca's tomb is found at the Santa Maria in Aracoeli "Our Lady of The Heavenly Altar", along with his wife, and his son Giacomo (Honorius IV). The papal tomb was actually designed for Luca's wife Vana.

Rocca of Piancastagnaio
The front inside the walls with the quarterdeck. A square tower of the walls, in the background the Mastio della Rocca. One of the surviving gates of the city walls, facing south.
Piancastagnaio is located on the slopes of Mount Amiata and can be reached by following the Via Cassia until the junction for Abbadia S. Salvatore / Vetta Amiata / Piancastagnaio.
Since the XI century the area of southern Tuscany around the castle of Piancastagnaio was the subject of the expansionist policy of the powerful family of the Aldobrandeschi and the whole territory is rich in historical evidence related to their potentato.
As almost always speaking of the Aldobrandeschi possessions also Piancastagnaio was disputed to the noble family by the monks of the San Salvatore Abbey from the year 1000, later it was claimed by the Visconti di Campiglia and during the XIIIth century it became the object of further disputes between Siena and Orvieto. The Orvietani obtained control of the powerful fortress in 1303, keeping it for about fifty years.
At this point the heirs of the Aldobrandeschi, the Orsini of Pitigliano, entered the disputes, this time to oppose the aims of the Sienese Republic. Only between 1415 and 1430 Siena finally managed to take possession of Piancastagnaio, who was annexed to the Capitanato di Radicofani.
Contemporaneously the fortress was the subject of extensive renovation that made it suitable to be the residence of Captain Sienese.
In 1600 the settlement became a grand-ducal fief and finally, with the Leopoldine reforms, the capital of the homonymous community.
Built on the slopes of Mount Amiata, the village has a circular shape, once enclosed by a fortified wall surrounded by square towers and four doors. The walls have been almost completely demolished, there are still three towers, two semicircular and one square, the main door next to the fortress and three other very simple doors, in the southern part of the walls' Porta Romana Porticciola 'e' Porta of Voltaia '. The mighty Rocca Aldobrandesca still stands today at the highest summit of the town. The building has a quadrilateral shape and is equipped with high walls strongly scarped. Two towers rise from the fence, the largest, both as solidity and height, had the formwork, the other, located in the opposite corner, defended the underlying gateway to the city. The whole complex was equipped with a defensive apparatus to protrude on corbels, still almost intact, and the battlements mostly disappeared. La Rocca is in excellent condition thanks to a careful restoration work completed at the end of the 18th century.

😍Sono certa che vi piacerà moltissimo. 😉
🥩Ristorante consigliato : hotel Aiole.
👣Escursione consigliata ai boschi del Monte amiata, dal prato delle Macinaie a Castel del Piano ci sono le foreste più belle, perfette anche per un pic nic
🇬🇧 During an hot summer season I visited Santa Fiora , Grosseto , on the Amiata Mountain 🌲🌲🌲
GOOD IDEA!!!
SANTA FIORA is one of the MOST charming village in Tuscany, and definitely on my TOP 5 FAVORITE!!!! 💛💚🧡
📌For 8 centuries Santa Fiora was the capital of an extraordinary county ruled by the powerful ancient Aldobrandeschi earls until 1400 and then by the noble family Sforza. A small town, divided in three districts and perched at the top of a volcanic steep rocks. Exceptionally rich of waters springs, is set on Amiata Mountain , an old volcano of 1750 metres above the sea level with a lush forest.
Let's discover Santa Fiora, more then a medieval village. Learn the history of the old palace, the beautiful robbiane altar pieces, the story of the three contesses, the Jewish quarter, the preindustrial watermill, the church over the spring and the peschiera, a large pool with a lush garden, dating back 1500. 😍
Amazing natural environment and great walks in the forest 🌲🌲🌲🌲

🥩Ristorante consigliato : hotel Aiole.
👣Escursione consigliata ai boschi del Monte amiata, dal prato delle Macinaie a Castel del Piano ci sono le foreste più belle, perfette anche per un pic nic
