Using your science to explore the climate history of Mars

Curiosity Rover's Shocking Mars Discover #shorts
In a jaw-dropping accident on Mars, NASA’s Curiosity rover cracked open an unassuming rock, and what spilled out was pure magic: yellow crystals of elemental sulfur, also known as brimstone. 🌟
🔍 The Surprise: Sulfates are fairly common on Mars, but this is the first time sulfur has been found in its pure elemental form on the red planet. Imagine stumbling upon an oasis of sulfur stones in the Martian desert! 🌄
🔬 The Clues: Sulfates usually form when sulfur combines with other minerals in water, which then evaporates, leaving the minerals behind. But pure sulfur? That’s a rare find. Curiosity’s discovery raises intriguing questions about Mars’ geological history and the conditions that led to this sulfur bonanza. 🤔

In February 2021, the robot "Perseverance" landed successfully on Mars. However, this success was never a given. The film shows the difficult work involved in developing the robot, right up to its successful landing.
The new robot NASA sent to Mars is called "Perseverance". Its mission? To search for evidence of past life on the Red Planet - an important and ambitious endeavor. It took years to design the space probe and its small helicopter drone, called "Ingenuity". This documentary follows the rover's development, right up to its landing in the Jezero Crater on February 18, 2021.
The mission proved to be a complete success: the robot landed safely and all the instruments on board functioned smoothly. As a result, "Perseverance" was able to deliver high-resolution images of Mars. But getting there was an arduous journey for all involved.
On site, "Perseverance" takes samples from the crater, which scientists believe was once a river delta. Geological traces of past life - so-called biosignatures - could be hidden in the rock. Eventually, these samples will be brought back to Earth for analysis. Among other things, they could provide insights into possible life on Mars.
The four-pound mini-helicopter "Ingenuity", which traveled in the belly of the rover, is now carrying out a series of test flights. These are the first of their kind to be undertaken on another planet. Another task of "Perseverance" is to test an innovative technology for extracting oxygen from the atmosphere. It is hoped that the gas can be used as fuel -- or to supply oxygen for future manned flights to Mars.

Cold, arid, and tens of millions of miles away from Earth, Mars has intrigued scientists for centuries. The existence of liquid on its surface was confirmed by NASA’s flyby mission, Mariner 4, in 1965, but the question of whether life exists on our neighbouring planet has remained a subject of much speculation.
In the 19th and 20th centuries, observers using only the naked eye and a telescope saw features on Mars which they interpreted as evidence for a dry but Earth-like climate, for vegetation which grew and decayed with the seasons, and for a great Martian canal network designed by a heroic but dying race of hydraulic engineers.
From its rocky craters to its polar ice caps, Carl describes our understanding of the geology and chemistry of Mars, revealing the discovery of its two moons, Phobos and Deimos, in 1877, and the bizarre one-time suggestion that these moons were artificial satellites launched by an ancient but not extinct Martian civilisation.

CARL SAGAN'S 1977 CHRISTMAS LECTURES:
What exists beyond Earth? Over six Lectures presented in 1977, American astronomer and cosmologist Carl Sagan explores the vast expanse of space that surrounds the third planet from the Sun.
Life on Earth
Where at first we could only discern the size of our planet and some knowledge of its atmosphere and configuration, the evolution of planetary exploration has revealed not only intricate details of Earth’s climate and geology, but a multitude of stars and planets besides our own.
Beginning with a closer look at the world we inhabit, Carl explores of the diversity of life on our own planet and the building blocks behind it, before questioning whether the same organic chemistry is occurring on planets in the outer solar system.
The Red Planet
In Lecture three onwards, Carl takes a closer look at our neighbouring planet, Mars. From early interpretations of terrestrial life on its surface to the surprising discoveries made by NASA’s Viking Program, the Red Planet has become the focus of efforts to discern whether intelligent life exists elsewhere in the universe.
When Carl delivered his Lectures in the late 1970s, NASA had only just begun its Voyager program to the furthest planets in our solar system and no extra-solar planets were known to exist. Now, over three decades later, astronomers are looking at planets that lie beyond our solar system to ask the very same question we pondered over Mars: is there life out there?
----
ABOUT THE CHRISTMAS LECTURES:
Set up by Michael Faraday when organised education for children was scarce, the Royal Institution CHRISTMAS LECTURES established an exciting new way of presenting science to young people. World-famous scientists have given the Lectures, including Nobel Prize winners William and Lawrence Bragg, Sir David Attenborough, Carl Sagan and Dame Nancy Rothwell.
First broadcast in 1936, the CHRISTMAS LECTURES is the oldest science television series. They have been broadcast every year since 1966 on the BBC and in later years on Channel Five, Channel Four and more4. In 2010, the Lectures returned to BBC Four, and this year were shown on the 26th, 27th and 28th of December. Find out more about the lectures here: https://www.rigb.org/christmas-lectures

🌐 The Mystery: The Gediz Vallis Channel, where Curiosity made this breakthrough, is littered with rocks resembling the sulfur find. Could elemental sulfur be abundant there? 🤷♂️
🌱 Life Connection: Sulfur is essential for all life—it’s used to create amino acids necessary for proteins. While we haven’t found Martians sipping sulfur lattes, these discoveries hint at past habitable conditions. 🌍

🌱 Life Connection: Sulfur is essential for all life—it’s used to create amino acids necessary for proteins. While we haven’t found Martians sipping sulfur lattes, these discoveries hint at past habitable conditions. 🌍

Space scientists exploring the Martian sand made a startling space discovery this week. Researchers had designed wet chemistry experiments to facilitate the detection of biological molecules such as amino acids and carboxylic acids. The samples picked up and analyzed by NASA's Curiosity rover revealed something very unique and interesting. For the first time, astrobiologists were able to detect the presence of organic molecules in the Martian sand. The organic compounds discovered include chemically derivatized benzoic acid and ammonia, among others. Mass spectra matching those of derivatized phosphoric acid and phenol made this discovery even more interesting. So does this finding imply that there's life on Mars? Does it in any way reveal the planet's history? We don't know yet. But it's definitely a significant space discovery that will pave the way for further astrobiological research on planet Mars.
