ACHERON RIVER
Mythology:
In ancient Greek mythology, Acheron was known as the "river of woe", and was one of the five rivers of the Greek underworld.
In the Homeric poems the Acheron was described as a river of Hades, into which Cocytus and Phlegethon both flowed.
The Roman poet Virgil called it the principal river of Tartarus, from which the Styx and Cocytus both sprang. The newly dead would be ferried across the Acheron by Charon in order to enter the Underworld.
William Blake's depiction of "The Vestibule of Hell and the Souls Mustering to Cross the Acheron" in his Illustrations to Dante's "Divine Comedy" object 5 c. 1824-27. The original for the work is held by the National Gallery of Victoria.
The Suda describes the river as "a place of healing, not a place of punishment, cleansing and purging the sins of humans".
According to later traditions, Acheron had been a son of Helios and either Gaia or Demeter, who had been turned into the Underworld river bearing his name after he refreshed the Titans with drink during their contest with Zeus. By this myth, Acheron is also the father of Ascalaphus by either Orphne or Gorgyra.
The river called Acheron with the nearby ruins of the Necromanteion is found near Parga on the mainland opposite Corfu. Another branch of Acheron was believed to surface at the Acherusian cape (now Karadeniz Ereğli in Turkey) and was seen by the Argonauts according to Apollonius of Rhodes. Greeks who settled in Italy identified the Acherusian lake into which Acheron flowed with Lake Avernus. Plato in his Phaedo identified Acheron as the second greatest river in the world, excelled only by Oceanus.
Following Greek mythology, Charon ferries souls across the Acheron to Hell. Those who were neutral in life sit on the banks
He claimed that Acheron flowed in the opposite direction from Oceanus beneath the earth under desert places. The wo© Escape to nature All rights reservedrd is also occasionally used as a synecdoche for Hades itself. Virgil mentions Acheron with the other infernal rivers in his description of the underworld in Book VI of the Aeneid. In Book VII, line 312 he gives to Juno the famous saying, flectere si nequeo superos, Acheronta movebo: 'If I cannot bend the will of Heaven, I shall move Hell.' The same words were used by Sigmund Freud as the dedicatory motto for his seminal book The Interpretation of Dreams, figuring Acheron as psychological underworld beneath the conscious mind.
The Acheron was sometimes referred to as a lake or swamp in Greek literature, as in Aristophanes' The Frogs and Euripides' Alcestis.
In Dante's Inferno, the Acheron river forms the border of Hell. Following Greek mythology, Charon ferries souls across this river to Hell. Those who were neutral in life sit on the banks.

The springs of the Acheron River are situated in an area of breathtaking natural beauty. The river is located 25km from Parga and 44km from Preveza, in Greece. The surrounding area has lush vegetation and crystal-clear waters, creating a stunning and unparalleled landscape. The river springs from the area known as the village Glykí at an altitude of 1.600 metres in the mountains of Soúli and discharges in Ammoudiá on the Ionian coast. The Acheron River is a protected ecosystem recognized by the Natura 2000 Network. In ancient Greek mythology, the river was known as the "river of pain" and was one of the five rivers of the Greek underworld. It was believed that the souls of the dead were transported across the river towards the god of the underworld, Hades. According to legend, the goddess Thetis bathed her son
Achilles in this river, holding him by the heel and giving him immortality.
Nowadays, the Acheron River is a famous tourist attraction where visitors can participate in various activities such as rafting, canoeing, mountain biking, and fishing. It is also a perfect place for nature enthusiasts to enjoy the beautiful scenery. Along the river, there are several restaurants and cafes for refreshments.
One of the popular destinations near the Acheron River is the Nekromanteion, an ancient sanctuary dedicated to the god of the underworld, Hades. The sanctuary communicated with the dead souls, and visitors could explore the crypts and underground corridors leading to the underworld. It is an exciting and unique experience for those interested in mythology and ancient history.

The word is also occasionally used as a synecdoche for Hades itself.

Hermes, in his guise as guide of the dead, and Charon would lead the shades down the Acheron River and the Lake Acherousian to Hades. Nowadays, only the call of the wild inhabits the valley, inviting you to come river trekking down the Acheron. You start at the village of Glyki, about 40km from Igoumenitsa. The landscape in uniquely charged and the experience unforgettable.
Angelina Jolie was here a couple of years ago and she just knows the best places to visit!
I urge you to start walking inside the river as far as you can. Most people do not walk more than 500 meters. Yet, the more you walk where no one else follows, the more you feel a part of the landscape; a unique feeling that you are somehow completing the picture of this bracing wilderness, just you alone and the water. By turns, its currents are deep and fast, and then shallow and soothing; they grab you for a vigorous tussle with the elements or lead you silently to beautiful pools they have sculpted out of the river banks. Tiny fish scuttle around your feet … so far no snakes! After a while you get used to the cold and you accept the temperature as if it were normal.
You’ll open up to a sensation of absolute freedom. You’ll while away the hours in the blissful company of friends. They’ll be time also for a bite to eat in a couple of handily placed taverns or maybe even a go at rafting- now it’s your turn to be the master of these dark waters!
Acheron is indeed the heaven on earth
When you look back on your experience of the Acheron, peace and tranquility will flood your soul and you’ll be borne on its generous whirling current all over again. This will be the moment when you realize that no matter how darkly tarnished by the brush of mythology, here is a place that in truth is a little piece of heaven on earth. Damned no longer… except for the damned fine job that nature has done in putting the record straight!
Acheron River in Parga, Epirus: The springs of Acheron River is an area of outstanding natural beauty located at the border of Thesprotia and Preveza, close to the villages of Kanalaki and Glyki. Apart from the natural beauty, the springs of Acheron is known worldwide for its mythological contents. In ancient Greek mythology, Acheron was one of the five rivers of the Greek underworld.
According to the tradition, Zeus was devastated when the Titans drunk from the water and then he condemned the river to remain eternally under the earth while its water became darker. Acheron River is located 25km from Parga, in a beautiful surrounding with rich vegetation and crystalline waters which comprise a unique natural landscape. In many parts of the river where the water flow is normal, there are lakes and water pits which have the ideal living conditions for many amphibians and fish. In other locations, the river flows impetuously through steep and precipitate high cliffs. In the rocky side slopes of Acheron, there are many birds of prey that nest in the forest slopes of the canyon.
Acheron River comprises a fantastic short trip for its magnificent transparent water and the surrounding rocky landscape. It is actually one of the least known places in Parga thus it retains its unspoiled natural beauty and secret energy. It flows from the mountains of Souli Epirus and after a long way, it reaches the Ionian Sea in Ammoudia beach.
Just a few km away from the sea, there is a forest with plants growing in the water, looking almost exotic due to their weird shape. After you cross the forest, you will see the edge of the river, reaching the imposing roman bridge, an ideal place for a picnic. There is no doubt that Acheron is a magnificent location with white rocks reflecting in the blue-green water. Today, Acheron River is an ecosystem that is recognized and a protected area by the Natura 2000 Network.
AKHERON (Acheron) was the god of the underworld river and lake of pain. The daimon Kharon (Charon) ferried the souls of the dead across its dark waters in his skiff.
