Abstract art uses a visual language of shape, form, color and line to create a composition which may exist with a degree of independence from visual references in the world.Western art had been, from the Renaissance up to the middle of the 19th century, underpinned by the logic of perspective and an attempt to reproduce an illusion of visible reality. The arts of cultures other than the European had become accessible and showed alternative ways of describing visual experience to the artist. By the end of the 19th century many artists felt a need to create a new kind of art which would encompass the fundamental changes taking place in technology, science and philosophy. The sources from which individual artists drew their theoretical arguments were diverse, and reflected the social and intellectual preoccupations in all areas of Western culture at that time.
Abstract art, nonfigurative art, nonobjective art, and nonrepresentational art are loosely related terms. They are similar, but perhaps not of identical meaning.

What Is Abstract Art?
What is abstract art? Why do artists insist on making it and why do the majority of the public dislike it so much? In this video we explore this topic in broad strokes. No pun intended. We take a look at the history of abstraction, what it was reacting against and why artists chose to depict their world in this way. We also take a quick look at some of the methods and modes of abstraction, ways it can be inspired and how it can be read and understood in artworks.
Asking what is abstraction is a pretty complex topic and this video only offers an overview. Future videos will explore some of the concepts listed in this video in more detail including materiality, the works of Kandinsky and the spiritual successor of abstraction, abstract expressionism.

What Makes a Good Abstract Painting?
I often meet artists who are frustrated with their attempts to make abstract paintings. They feel a pull towards abstraction, but they don't like the results. I believe there are two reasons why this happens... a) lack of clear intention and b) lack of knowledge in a few key areas. The good news is that both can easily be fixed. The issue is NOT a lack of talent ... you just need a little bit more information.
I am on a mission to help artists find their own unique voice and make exciting, original artwork that is truly unique. If this sounds exciting, join my weekly artist's newsletter at https://www.louisefletcherart.com/contact

been a friend to you for some time now
see how you hide from the world
and i know you feel like you shouldn't cry , let it out
cos you know everybody hurts
you , you don’t know you’re beautiful
you don’t even have to try
i know growing up is difficult
but you gotta live your life
there’s always gonna be someone trying to tear you apart
always gonna be sticks and stones and broken hearts
they’re gonna try and tell you who you are
not everybody can understand abstract art
abstract art
where you see weakness , i see power
and some would pay any price
but it can’t be bought , no it can’t be sold
it’s just your own design

you don’t even have to try

The issue is NOT a lack of talent ... you just need a little bit more information.

lyrics
been a friend to you for some time now
see how you hide from the world
and i know you feel like you shouldn't cry , let it out
cos you know everybody hurts
you , you don’t know you’re beautiful
you don’t even have to try
i know growing up is difficult
but you gotta live your life
there’s always gonna be someone trying to tear you apart
always gonna be sticks and stones and broken hearts
they’re gonna try and tell you who you are
not everybody can understand abstract art
abstract art
where you see weakness , i see power
and some would pay any price
but it can’t be bought , no it can’t be sold
it’s just your own design
you , you don’t know you’re beautiful
you don’t even have to try
i know growing up is difficult
but you gotta live your life
there’s always gonna be someone trying to tear you apart
always gonna be sticks and stones and broken hearts
they’re gonna try and tell you who you are
not everybody can understand abstract art
abstract art
you , you don’t know you’re beautiful
you don’t even have to try
i know growing up is difficult
but you gotta live your life
there’s always gonna be someone trying to tear you apart
always gonna be sticks and stones and broken hearts
they’re gonna try and tell you who you are
not everybody can understand abstract art

In this episode of "The Way I See It," actor and comedian Steve Martin looks at paintings by two early pioneers of American abstraction and takes us on a journey of seeing—shape and color transform into mountains, sky, and water.
