Northrop Frye, Archetypal Criticism
Canadian literary critic Northrop Frye offers the only alternative to the New Critics' pattern of the 'close reading' of a text in the twentieth century that does not either deny a common humanity or mount a war on the word. Frye's 1953 masterpiece Anatomy of Criticism actually suggests four legitimate means of reading literature, but it is the archetypal criticism for which he is most famous.
Following Carl Jung, Frye offers a mode of reading that understands human experience in universal terms, seeing primal, general, and universal themes in the great works of literature, and the 'great code' of art in the Bible. Dr. Jordan Peterson has to some degree repopularised Frye's approach with his psychological readings of literature and the idea of a 'collective unconscious' common to all hu...

Northrop Frye -- 2 reasons Christianity conquered Rome & paganism: The Bible is the KEY to mythology
Canada's great literary critic analyses how Christianity transmuted the best of paganism. To mythology. fragments already absorbed, albeit transformed, in the Old Testament, Christianity added the ethical and transcendent weight of Judaism. The messianic light of the prophets, even the sometimes dazzling but refracted flashes of ancient mythology, came into focus and literal flesh in the person of Jesus Christ. The new faith, combining the best of then existing cultures, became the world's largest religion. In large part because Christianity took over the discipline of Judaism, as well as its Scriptures, the new faith even conquered the Roman Empire in 3 centuries. In these ways, paganism and the great ancient empires prepared the world and paved the Way of Christianity

Northrop Frye - The Educated Imagination - Part 2 of 6 - The Singing School
In the 1962 Massey Lectures, Northrop Frye writes:
"What good is the study of literature? Does it help us to think more clearly or feel more sensitively or live a better life than we would without it? What is the function of the teacher and scholar or the person who calls himself, as I do, a literary critic? What difference does the study of literature make in our social or political or religious attitude?
"In my early days, I thought very little about such questions, not because I had any of the answers but because I assumed that anybody who asked them was naïve. I think now that the simplest questions are not only the hardest to answer but the most important to ask..."

Between 1980 and 1981 Prof. Northrop Frye held 25 lectures under the title ‘The Bible and Literature’. Each of these lectures was recorded and for each of them a transcript was provided. Later excerpts of these 25 lectures (each 50 minutes long) were made into 30 programs (each about 30 minutes). That means in some cases 1 lecture supplied material for 2 programs or the other way around
