Broadway History - The Richard Rodgers Theatre
Previously called Chanin's 46th Street Theatre, it was the first theater built by The Chanin Organization, in 1925. Founded by Irwin S. Chanin, owner of a major New York construction company, the organization began building theaters in the 1920s. Chanin did not have much money growing up and he was intent on democratizing the theatergoing experience so that all patrons—those paying higher prices for the best seats and those sitting in the less expensive seats—would all enter through the same door. Theater architect Herbert J. Krapp achieved Chanin’s goal at the Richard Rodgers. He also pioneered stadium seating, which gave the audience better site lines and acoustics. The orchestra was raked steeply upwards at the rear, rising over the entrance lobby with one large balcony above.

While Krapp’s theaters for the Shuberts were simply designed, his theaters for the Chanins were more elaborate; they included Renaissance-style brick and terra-cotta facades. This theater was landmarked for its elaborate facade, which featured a triple-arched loggia set within a colonnade of five Corinthian pilasters and adorned with terra-cotta ornamentation including theatrical masks. Other significant architectural features included a domed ceiling and ornate plasterwork on the proscenium arch, boxes, and balcony front. Continuously operated as a legitimate theater, it has been home to some of Broadway’s greatest hits: Damn Yankees, On Your Toes, Guys and Dolls, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, and Nine. Purchased by the Nederlander organization in 1982, it was renamed the Richard Rodgers in 1990 to honor the great composer.

(We were obviously prohibited from taking any footage of the performance. Even openly recording the pre-performance line of King George, warning us to silence all cell phones, prompted an usher to give me an even sterner warning. Lilly thought we were going to get kicked out - and who knows - maybe we were. In any case, “enjoy my show!”)
Lilly has been obsessed with Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton since it’s debut on Disney+. A student or theatre and an aspiring singer herself, Lilly has really enjoyed all of Miranda’s works. So seeing Hamilton at the Richard Rodgers Theatre on Broadway was a MUST DO while in New York City…but, it almost didn’t happen!
Our road trip had us arriving in NYC in early August 2022, but the final run for Hamilton on Broadway was forecasted to end in mid-June. While looking for other shows online, we found that Hamilton had been extended at Richard Rodgers through the fall. We must have stumbled on this just as it was posted, because there were a lot of great seats left. We quickly secured five seats in the middle of the first row upon the first mezzanine. The view was spectacular!
On the Spectrum: Levi has come a long way in his ability to endure overstimulation. But, if a three-hour show wasn’t bad enough, his tolerance for Hamilton has been eroded with Lilly’s continual watching and singing of the show. Within minutes of the show starting, we knew Levi needed help. I took him downstairs and asked the staff if they had any special-needs accommodations. Although not specific to autism, a staff member came up with the best solution by lending Levi a pair of noise-canceling wireless headphones. The headphones were more attuned to the performers’ voices, so Levi was able to focus on what was being said more than the accompanying musical score and cheering. He is NOT a fan of cheering. Thank goodness for Richard Rodgers’ smart staff!
The current cast, listed below, lent their own artistry and persona to the characters that both separates and dare say enhances the live performance from the popular Lin-Manuel Miranda original cast that is shown on Disney+. The show was adapted to include a song from the later-produced Hamilton Mixed Tape. Nik Walker owned his dubious role as Aaron Burr, while Krystal Joy Brown’s power theatric performance seemed to steal the show.
Miguel Cervantes as Alexander Hamilton
Nik Walker as Aaron Burr
Mandy Gonzalez as Angelica Schuyler
Euan Morton as King George
Krystal Joy Brown as Eliza Hamilton
Tamar Greene as George Washington
Kyle Scatliffe as Marquis de Lafayette/Thomas Jefferson
Fergie L. Philippe as Hercules Mulligan/James Madison
Aubin Wise as Peggy Schuyler/Maria Reynolds
Daniel Yearwood as John Laurens/Phillip Hamilton
Hamilton is a sung-and-rapped-through musical by Lin-Manuel Miranda. It took over seven years to compose. It tells the story of American Founding Father Alexander Hamilton. Miranda said that he was inspired to write the musical after reading the 2004 biography Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow.
Hamilton is the story of the unlikely Founding Father determined to make his mark on the new nation as hungry and ambitious as he is. From bastard orphan to Washington's right-hand man, rebel to war hero, a loving husband caught in the country's first sex scandal, to the Treasury head who made an untrusting world believe in the American economy. George Washington, Eliza Hamilton, Thomas Jefferson and Hamilton's lifelong friend/foil Aaron Burr all make their mark in this astonishing new musical exploration of a political mastermind.
Critics’ Reviews:
"'Hamilton' is the most exciting and significant musical of the decade. Sensationally potent and theatrically vital, it is plugged straight into the wall socket of contemporary music. This show makes me feel hopeful for the future of musical theater."
Review by Terry Teachout from The Wall Street Journal
"Historic. 'Hamilton' is brewing up a revolution. This is a show that aims impossibly high and hits its target. It's probably not possible to top the adrenaline rush."
Review by Ben Brantley from The New York Times.

The Richard Rodgers Theatre, located at 226 West 46th Street in the Theater District of Midtown Manhattan in New York City, is a historic Broadway theater with a rich history. It was opened in 1925 and designed by Herbert J. Krapp for Irwin Chanin. The theater has approximately 1,400 seats across two levels and is currently operated by the Nederlander Organization. Both the facade and the auditorium interior of the Richard Rodgers Theatre are designated as New York City landmarks.
The facade of the Richard Rodgers Theatre is divided into two sections. The eastern section, which houses the auditorium, is designed in the neo-Renaissance style and features white brick and terracotta. The ground floor of the auditorium has an entrance under a marquee, with a loggia of three double-height arches above it, as well as an entablature and balustrade at the top. The western section of the facade comprises the stage house and is seven stories high, faced in buff-colored brick. The auditorium itself contains neo-Renaissance detailing, steep stadium seating in the orchestra level, a large balcony, and a shallow domed ceiling. The slope of the seats in the orchestra level causes the rear of the orchestra to be one story above ground, and there are also box seats on two tiers near the front of the auditorium.
The Richard Rodgers Theatre was the first Broadway theater developed by Irwin S. Chanin, and it was initially leased to the Shubert brothers when it opened. The Shuberts eventually bought the building outright in 1931 and renamed it the 46th Street Theatre. In 1945, the theater was taken over by Robert W. Dowling of the City Investing Company, and in 1960, it was purchased by producer Lester Osterman. In 1978, it was sold to producers Stephen R. Friedman and Irwin Meyer, and then acquired by the Nederlander Organization in 1981. In 1990, it was renamed the Richard Rodgers Theatre in honor of the renowned composer Richard Rodgers.
Over the years, the Richard Rodgers Theatre has been home to numerous successful Broadway productions. It has hosted eleven Tony Award-winning shows, including Guys and Dolls, Redhead, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, 1776, Raisin, Nine, Fences, Lost in Yonkers, In the Heights, and Hamilton. Other notable long-running shows at the theater have included Panama Hattie and One Touch of Venus. The Richard Rodgers Theatre continues to be an iconic and beloved venue in the Broadway theater scene, attracting audiences from around the world to experience the magic of live theater in the heart of New York City.
