The 3rd United States Infantry Regiment is a regiment of the United States Army. It currently has three active battalions, and is readily identified by its nickname, "The Old Guard," as well as "Escort to the President". The regimental motto is Noli Me Tangere (from Latin: – "Touch me Not"). The regiment is a major unit of the Military District of Washington (MDW).
The regiment is the oldest active duty regiment in the US Army, having been first organized as the First American Regiment in 1784.
Mission
The regiment's mission is to conduct memorial affairs to honor fallen comrades and ceremonies and special events to represent the U.S. Army, communicating its story to United States citizens and the world. On order, it conducts defense support of civil authorities in the National Capital Region and deploys elements in support of overseas contingency operations.
The infantry is the branch of a military force that fights on foot. As the troops who are intended to engage, fight, and defeat the enemy in face-to-face combat, they bear the brunt of warfare and typically suffer the greatest number of casualties. Historically, as the oldest branch of the combat arms, the infantry are the tip of the spear of a modern army, and continually undergo training that is more physically stressful and psychologically demanding than that of any other branch of the combat arms.
Infantry can enter and maneuver in terrain that is inaccessible to military vehicles and employ crew-served infantry weapons that provide greater and more sustained firepower. The transport and delivery techniques of modern infantrymen to engage in battle include marching, mechanised transport, airborne by parachute or by air assault from helicopter and amphibious landing from the sea.
History and etymology
In English, the 16th-century term Infantry (ca. 1570s) describes soldiers who walk to the battlefield, and there engage, fight, and defeat the enemy in direct combat, usually to take and occupy the terrain. As describing the branch of the combat arms, the term Infantry derives from the French Infanterie, which, in turn, is derived from the Italian Fanteria and ultimately from the Latin Infantera; the individual-soldier term Infantryman (1837) was not coined until the 19th century. Historically, before the invention and the introduction of firearms to warfare, the foot soldiers of previous eras—armed with blunt and edged weapons, and a shield—also are considered and identified as infantrymen.
The regiment claims its descent from the first European garrisons in America. The first muster of militia troops in the continental United States took place on 16 September 1565, in the newly established Spanish presidio town of St. Augustine in what is now the state of Florida.
The 162nd Infantry Regiment is a regiment of the Oregon Army National Guard with headquarters in Springfield, Oregon. In January 2006 as part of the Army's transformation towards a modular force, the 1st Battalion, 162nd Infantry Regiment was inactivated. Many members continued to serve with the 2nd Battalion and other units within the 41st Infantry Brigade Combat Team.
World War II
At one point in World War II, from 1943 until early 1944, the 2d battalion of the 162d was commanded by Archibald Roosevelt, the son of 26th US President, Theodore Roosevelt.
Present
Members of C Company, 1st Battalion, 162nd Infantry Regiment, deployed to Eskan Village in Kuwait in June 1999 through April of 2000 to provide security for Patriot sites there. The unit was set to replace a National Guard unit from Arkansas who were deployed there.
Soldiers from the 1st Battalion, 162nd Infantry Regiment deployed to Asahikawa, Japan to participate in NORTHWIND 94 to partake in extreme cold weather training.

🇺🇸U.S. Army 3rd Infantry Regiment “The Old Guard” Soldier Plays Fife During Ceremony 🎶 #army
The fife and drum were a particularly significant part of war in the 18th century. The musicians helped the unit by assisting in boosting morale, coordinating movements, and keeping discipline in a military unit during the Revolutionary War.
The Soldier playing the fife is part of the 3rd Infantry Regiment also known as “The Old Guard”. He is wearing a uniform similar to what Soldiers would have worn in General George Washington's Continental Army. He is seen playing “The First of September” on fife during a ceremony at the Camden Burials on 4/21/23.

To put this into a barney style context that even I can comprehend. Modern infantry fighting vehicles of the past 4 decades usually range from merely 18.7 tons like the Russian made BMP-3, up to a modest 43 tons with the German Puma IFV. However, the VN-20 stands in a weight-class all its own. At 50 tons, the VN-20 is one of, if not the heaviest infantry fighting vehicle in the world.

British Army's future infantry leaders prepare for huge test
Soldiers from the British Army's Union Division have taken part in a military training exercise to learn the necessary skills to become future leaders and attend promotional courses held in Brecon.
The Section Commander and Platoon Sergeants' Battle courses are both held in the Welsh countryside and it is where all infanteers must go to prove they have the qualities to lead troops on operations.
Due to Brecon's harsh landscape, combined with some of the UK's worst weather, it's become a place most troops revere, with a daunting reputation – hence the 'Brecon myth'.

I mean just look at this image for scale of a human standing next to the giant towering creature. Us short kings would need a booster seat and a step ladder just to get into it. But what do you really get in return for all that extra lbs. The vehicle has room for 3 crew to work the insane number of weapon systems plus 6 dismounted Chinese infantry soldiers in the rear compartment who are ready to rock. This is when it dawned on me. When looking at its specifications and capabilities the VN-20 we’re looking at shock trooper vehicle. This thing is meant for assault offensive take ground operations meant to punch through stubborn defensive lines.
But this extra armor and weapons creates major trade offs. One of the possible limitations with the heavier standard weight could limit the VN-20 from adding additional armor and weapon packages in the future. Although I’m not sure what extra armor you could possibly hope to toss on there. According to reports allegedly it’s equipped with Level 6 STANAG 4569 rated armor which means it can stop incoming 30mm cannon rounds so the American’s bradley would bounce right off it essentially. Allegedly, allegedly!

The Sentinels at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier stand guard 24 hours a day year-round to protect those that gave everything in service of their nation. What does it take to become a Sentinel? In our new series "Behind the Old Guard," we take an in-depth look at some of the specialty units in the 3d U.S. Infantry Regiment.
(Video by Staff Sergeant Chris Ballentine)
(Historic and aerial photos courtesy of U.S. Library of Congress http://www.loc.gov/)

The Old Guard Ceremonial Equipment Branch, also known as the “Flag Shop”, is a one-of-a-kind organization in the U.S. Army. Assisting with ceremonial support for the Military District of Washington and beyond, the Flag Shop provides everything needed from the National Colors, to period-authentic Revolutionary War uniforms and beyond. We talked with Private First Class Cameron Mulloy about what the Flag Shop does, and why they are such a valued part of the Old Guard. (Video by U.S. Army Sgt. Sean-David McDonald)
Performing ceremonies in the Military Disctrict of Washington and funeral services in Arlington National Cemetery requires precision and dedication. Upon arrival, all soldiers E-6 and below spend three weeks training hard in the Regimental Orientation Program, learning everything from uniform wear and appearance to the specialized Drill and Ceremony conducted here in the Old Guard. This week's Behind The Scenes showcases the instructors of ROP, and how they prepare soldiers to be the best. (U.S. Army video by SSG Jake Hughes)

The United States Army Old Guard Fife & Drum Corps was created in 1960 to support official ceremonial functions, revive the Army's musical heritage and showcase the professionalism of U.S. Army soldiers. Today the Corps serves as a living example of the rich traditions and proud history of this nation. They perform for thousands of people across the country each year as well as playing for the President of the United States and a variety of events right here in the D.C. area.
"There is no greater honor then to serve those fallen before us." -- Soldiers assigned to The 3d U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard) have the distinct duty of rendering final military honors to their fallen comrades. (U.S. Army video by Army SSG Jedhel Somera).
Take a look at what you can expect to find at training, if you apply to join the British Army as an Infanteer.
