Free: The Future of a Radical Price
In the digital marketplace, the most effective price is no price at all. Savvy businesses are raking it in with indirect routes from product to revenue with such models as cross-subsidies (giving away a DVR to cell cable service) and ΓÇ£freemiumsΓÇ¥ (offering Flickr for free while selling the superior FlickrPro to serious users. New media models have allowed successes like ObamaΓÇÖs campaign ΓÇ£billboardsΓÇ¥ on Xbox Live, Webkinz dolls and RadioheadΓÇÖs name-your-own-album experiment. A generational and global shift is at playΓÇöthose below 30 wonΓÇÖt pay for information knowing it will be available somewhere for free: in China today 95 of music consumption is pirated. Chris Anderson visits Google to present his book "Free" This event took place on July 9, 2009, as part of the Authors@Google series.
Chris Anderson is the author of the international bestseller The Long Tail. He is the editor in chief of Wired magazine and was a U.S. business editor at The Economist. He began his career at the two premier science journals Science and Nature. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics from George Washington University and studied Quantum Mechanics and Science Journalism at the University of California.
In his revolutionary bestseller, The Long Tail, Chris Anderson demonstrated how the online marketplace creates niche markets, allowing products and consumers to connect in a way that has never been possible before. Now, in Free, he makes the compelling case that in many instances businesses can profit more from giving things away than they can by charging for them. Far more than a promotional gimmick, Free is a business strategy that may well be essential to a company's survival.
The costs associated with the growing online economy are trending toward zero at an incredible rate. Never in the course of human history have the primary inputs to an industrial economy fallen in price so fast and for so long. Just think that in 1961, a single transistor cost $10; now Intel's latest chip has two billion transistors and sells for $300 (or 0.000015 cents per transistor--effectively too cheap to price). The traditional economics of scarcity just don't apply to bandwidth, processing power, and hard-drive storage.
Yet this is just one engine behind the new Free, a reality that goes beyond a marketing gimmick or a cross-subsidy. Anderson also points to the growth of the reputation economy; explains different models for unleashing the power of Free; and shows how to compete when your competitors are giving away what you're trying to sell.
In Free, Chris Anderson explores this radical idea for the new global economy and demonstrates how this revolutionary price can be harnessed for the benefit of consumers and businesses alike.

"Free", this book mainly talks about how to use free strategies to achieve commercial success in the era of digital economy. The author of this book is American Chris Anderson, the editor-in-chief of the famous "Wired" magazine. He is known as "the spiritual leader of the information age" and "Kevin Kelly's successor". Chris Anderson once proposed a very famous long-tail theory to analyze the profit model of enterprises in the digital economy era. The traditional market theory believes that the market follows the "20-80 Law", that is, 20% of the products generate 80% of the profits, which means that best-selling products bring most of the profits.
The long-tail theory holds that in the era of digital economy, due to the unlimited expansion of storage space and the infinite approach to zero production marginal cost, even the tail products with extremely low demand, even if only one person buys them, can be produced and sold. The profits of enterprises do not come from best-selling products, but from these tail products. And this book is in the same line as the long-tail theory. It is Anderson's thinking on extending the long-tail theory to the application level. It summarizes the business model suitable for the new economy from the perspective of price.

Free By Marcus Miller Ft. Corrinne Bailey Rae
This is one of my favorite songs. It's one of those songs you put on and just groove too.
