Singing and dancing in the street, thousands of illegal immigrants and supporters rallied in California on Monday as part of a nationwide work boycott designed to demonstrate economic power.
"We are all fighting for a cause in which we all need the citizenship to be in the same country. Work and help this continent, to make it bigger. America continues to grow more and more. Latinos are helping to make it bigger and bigger", said Marco Lopez, a protester.
In Los Angeles, organisers chose Broadway street, because it''s the heart of Latino commerce.
Protesters were wearing white to symbolise peace and hold US flags to show their love for the country that has given them work.
They also sang the national anthem in English as traditional Mexican dancers wove through the crowd.
The overwhelming message, from the protest, is a desire to be part of the melting pot that is the U-S.
What they want, they say, is to come out of the shadows, to be acknowledged for the work they do, the goods they buy and, in some cases anyway, the taxes they pay.

STORYLINE:
Angry over recent raids and frustrated with Congress, thousands of people protested across the United States on Tuesday to demand a path to citizenship for an estimated 12 million illegal immigrants.
From New York to Detroit to to Los Angeles, thousands of people chanting "USA" marched through the streets carrying American flags.
Organisers say immigrants feel a sense of urgency to keep immigration reform from getting pushed onto the backburner by the 2008 presidential elections.
Nationwide, however, the rallies produced only a fraction of the million-plus protesters who turned out last year, as fear of raids kept many illegal immigrants from coming out, while organisers and activists began channelling their energies elsewhere.
In Los Angeles, where May 1 protests in 2006 brought out several hundred thousand at various activities, only about 10-thousand turned out for a downtown rally. A second rally was expected in the afternoon.
In Chicago, where over 400-thousand swarmed the streets a year earlier, police officials put estimates at about 150-thousand - by far the country's largest turnout.
Organisers had long predicted lower turnouts, blaming stepped up immigration raids, frustration that marches haven't pushed Congress to pass immigration reform legislation and a concerted effort by many groups to focus on citizenship and voter registration drives instead of street protests.
Still, they argued smaller crowds didn't mean the movement to win a path to citizenship for 12 million illegal immigrants had lost steam.
After last year's protests, reform legislation stalled in Congress and bipartisan proposals for illegal immigrants to gain citizenship have become more conservative.
Tuesday's protesters expressed frustration with the deadlock on Capitol Hill and hope that their nationwide effort would remind lawmakers their voices will not disappear.

Organisers of Saturday's massive protest march in Los Angeles are claiming a partial victory in their effort to shape the outcome of an ongoing political battle over immigration reform.
More than a half-million people, by official estimates, crowded into the streets of downtown Los Angeles, protesting a move by US lawmakers to pass a sweeping get-tough immigration measure.
Marches in Los Angeles and other US cities last Friday and over the weekend were in protest of the legislation, which critics say would make criminals out of millions of undocumented immigrants.
Organisers of the Los Angeles march told reporters on Tuesday they believe more than a (m) million people crammed the streets of the city in protest against the measure under debate in the US Senate.
Calling themselves the March 25th Coalition, organisers say the protests in Los Angeles and other cities are only the beginning of an effort to raise national awareness on the issue of immigrant rights.
They say those protests, which drew national media attention, have helped to sway lawmakers in the US Senate who are now considering a move to expand guest worker programs for immigrants.
But protest organisers say they're efforts will not end until some 12 (m) million undocumented immigrants in the US achieve citizenship.
