The 2006–07 Guinness Premiership was the 20th season of the top flight of the English domestic rugby union competitions, played between September 2006 and May 2007. It was announced during the 2005-06 season that the 2006-07 competition would end two weeks early due to the 2007 Rugby World Cup in France, as England would be defending their title. At the end of the previous season, Harlequins gained promotion to this season, while the Leeds Tykes were relegated. The Champions of this season were Leicester Tigers, beating Gloucester RFC 44-16 on May 12 in the Final at Twickenham, while the Northampton Saints were relegated. Leeds Tykes are set to return in 2007-08 under their new name of Leeds Carnegie, after being promoted.
From the start of the season, all half-time intervals were increased from the traditional 10minutes to 15minutes. The move has been explained as allowing clubs to capitalise on growing capacities and maximise refreshment income.
The English Premiership, currently known as Aviva Premiership Rugby or more commonly the Aviva Premiership because of the league's sponsorship by Aviva, is a professional league competition for men's rugby union football clubs in the top division of the English rugby union system. There are twelve clubs in the Premiership. The competition has been played since 1987, and has evolved into the current Premiership system employing relegation to and promotion from the RFU Championship, known as National Division One before the 2009–10 season. Clubs competing in the Premiership qualify for Europe's two main club competitions, the European Rugby Champions Cup and the European Rugby Challenge Cup. The current champions are Saracens. The most recently promoted side is Worcester Warriors, who, after defeating Bristol in the 2015 RFU Championship Final, returned to the top flight after a one-year absence.
History
Beginnings: English domestic rugby union until 1972
The governing body of rugby union in England, the Rugby Football Union (RFU), long resisted leagues as it was believed that the introduction of leagues would increase 'dirty' play and put pressure on clubs to pay their players (thereby contravening the amateur ethos). Instead, clubs arranged their own friendlies and had traditional games. The only organised tournaments were the County Cups and County Championship — the former played by clubs and the latter by County representative teams. The Daily Telegraph and a few local newspapers — such as the Yorkshire Post — compiled 'pennants' based on teams' performances, but as the strength of fixture lists varied, it was at best an estimate of a team's performance throughout a season.
The 2007–08 Guinness Premiership was the 21st season of the top flight of the English domestic rugby union competitions, played between September 2007 and May 2008. Due to the 2007 Rugby World Cup the season started slightly later than normal, as England were trying to defend their title. Leeds Tykes, which renamed themselves Leeds Carnegie shortly after the 2006-07 season, were promoted from National Division One 2006-07, taking the place of Northampton Saints who were relegated.
During the season, London Wasps went from 10th in the league during October, to beat Leicester in the Guinness Premiership Final.
Participating teams
Table
If teams are level at any stage, tiebreakers are applied in the following order:
Number of matches won
Difference between points scored and allowed
Total number of points scored
Aggregate number of points scored in matches between tied teams
Number of matches won excluding the first match, then the second and so on until the tie is settled
The 2009–10 Guinness Premiership was the 23rd season of the top flight of the English domestic rugby union competitions, played between September 2009 and May 2010. Defending champions Leicester Tigers topped the regular season league table and then won their third title in four years and their ninth overall after they defeated Saracens in the Premiership final at Twickenham on 29 May 2010.
This was the final season for the competition as the Guinness Premiership. Effective with the 2010–11 season, the competition will be known as the Aviva Premiership for at least four seasons.
The previous season
The season saw the introduction of the controversial ELVs, although only 13 of the rules were used, as opposed to the 30 that were trialled in the Super 14. Most were abandoned at the end of the season.
Leicester Tigers finished top of the league after the home-and-away season and went on to win the championship, first defeating Bath 24–10 in the semifinals and then edging London Irish 10–9 in the final at Twickenham.
