The 1970–71 season was the 91st season of competitive football in England.
Football League
First Division
Arsenal won the league championship at the end of a season which would soon be followed by their FA Cup final tie with Liverpool. Arsenal secured the league title at White Hart Lane, the home of bitter rivals Tottenham. They narrowly overcame Leeds to win the league, with a 12-point gap separating Leeds from third-placed Tottenham. Wolves and Liverpool joined these two teams in the UEFA Cup. Chelsea missed out on the top five on goal average but compensated for this shortcoming by achieving European Cup Winners' Cup glory over Real Madrid.
Burnley and Blackpool (who won this year's Anglo-Italian Cup) were relegated to the Second Division. Burnley returned from 1973–74 to 1975–76 but Blackpool had to wait 39 years to regain their top flight status for the 2010–11 season.
Wilf McGuinness was sacked at the end of 1970 after 18 unsuccessful months as manager of Manchester United. Sir Matt Busby was re-appointed as manager on a temporary basis, but never considered returning to his old job on a permanent basis. Leicester City manager Frank O'Farrell was appointed at the end of the season, ahead of more reputable candidates including Jock Stein and Don Revie.
Association football is the national sport in the United Kingdom, where the first modern set of rules for the code were established in 1863, which were a major influence on the development of the modern Laws of the Game. With over 40,000 association football clubs, England has more clubs involved in the code than any other country as well as the world's first club (Sheffield F.C.), the world's oldest professional association football club (Notts County F.C), the oldest national governing body (the Football Association), the first national team, the oldest national knockout competition (the FA Cup) and the oldest national league (the Football League). Today the UK's top domestic league, the Premier League, is one of the most popular and richest sports leagues in the world.
The first fully professional football competition in the world, the League's early years were dominated by teams from the North and Midlands, where professionalism was embraced more readily than in the South. Its status as the country's pre-eminent league was strengthened in 1892, when the rival Football Alliance was absorbed into the Football League. Former Alliance clubs comprised the bulk of a new Second Division, from which promotion to the top level could be gained. It was not until 1931 that a Southern club were crowned champions, when Herbert Chapman's Arsenal secured the title. Arsenal scored 127 goals in the process, a record for a title-winning side (though runners-up Aston Villa ironically scored one goal more, a record for the top division).
List of winners of English Football League One and predecessors
A national third tier of English league football was established in 1958–59, as the Third Division. This followed on from the regional third tier that had been established in the south in 1920 and the north in 1921. In 1992, with the departure of the First Division clubs to become the Premier League, the third tier became known as the Second Division. Since 2004 it has been known as Football League One.
First episode of this great series; first broadcast summer 1995.
I had to remove the background audio ('The Wonder of You') from the section discussing Bertie Mee, which explains the somewhat odd audio during this part of the video.

1970-71 Season (BBC)
After the enormous success of the goals compilation from ITV, I have decided to do the same with the BBC. First, the 1970-71 season.
Something to be noted is that I have lost many of the original files during those years, and some goals and matches come from my "On This Day" series, which may affect your viewing. The list of games will appear in due course.

Episode 2 of the this enjoyable series, taped – mercifully – by me, on to an already ageing VHS tape in the mid-90s.
Because of the somewhat draconian nature of copyright claims made by UEFA, I have had to completely obscure the picture from the clip of West Germany defeating England in the 1972 European Championship, in the 36th minute of the video. It was either that, or have the entire video blocked.

The Arsenal Football Club, commonly known as simply Arsenal, is a professional football club based in Holloway, North London, England. They compete in the Premier League, the top tier of English football. In domestic football, Arsenal have won 13 league titles (including one unbeaten title), a record 14 FA Cups, two League Cups, 17 FA Community Shields, and a Football League Centenary Trophy. In European football, they have one European Cup Winners' Cup and one Inter-Cities Fairs Cup. In terms of trophies won, it is the third-most successful club in English football.
Arsenal were the first club from southern England to join the Football League in 1893, and it reached the First Division in 1904. Relegated only once, in 1913, it continues the longest streak in the top division, and has won the second-most top-flight matches in English football history. In the 1930s, Arsenal won five League Championships and two FA Cups, and another FA Cup and two Championships after the war. In 1970–71, it won its first League and FA Cup double. Between 1989 and 2005, they won five league titles and five FA Cups, including two more doubles. They completed the 20th century with the highest average league position. Between 1998 and 2017, Arsenal qualified for the UEFA Champions League for an English football record nineteen consecutive seasons. The streak ended in 2017, when Arsenal finished in fifth place, one point away from the fourth spot occupied by Liverpool.
In 1886, munitions workers at the Royal Arsenal in Woolwich founded the club as Dial Square. In 1913, the club crossed the city to Arsenal Stadium in Highbury, becoming close neighbours of Tottenham Hotspur, and creating the North London derby. Herbert Chapman won the club its first silverware, and his legacy enabled a trophy-laden period in the 1930s. He helped introduce the WM formation, floodlights, and shirt numbers; he also added the white sleeves and brighter red to the club's jersey. Arsène Wenger is the club's longest-serving manager and has won the most trophies. He won a record seven FA Cups, and his third and final title-winning team set an English record for the longest top-flight unbeaten league run at 49 games between 2003 and 2004, receiving the nickname The Invincibles.
In 2006, the club moved to the nearby Emirates Stadium. With an annual revenue of £367.1m in the 2021–22 season,[ Arsenal was estimated to be worth US$2.26 billion by Forbes, making it the world's tenth-most valuable football club, while it is one of the most followed on social media. The motto of the club is Victoria Concordia Crescit, Latin for "Victory Through Harmony.".

Another mammoth video, with more than 3 hours of action from the 1970-71 season. This will be the last new video for a while, instead concentrating more on updating earlier seasons with new footage. Timestamps as follow:
0:07 - August 1970
22:34 - September 1970
35:00 - October 1970
58:52 - November 1970
1:15:08 - December 1970
1:38:37 - January 1971
2:07:57 - February 1971
2:17:52 - March 1971
2:33:38 - April 1971
2:51:58 - May 1971
3:00:55 - June 1971
Note: at 2:51:31, it should read 04/28, not 08/24.
Walking down the street in the city Now I am one of the boys, looking pretty And people turn their heads as I walk by And girls says to me; if you don’t want me I must die But I ignore them, I aint got the time I keep on walking as horny girls stand in line ‘Cause I know they are after my shoes My tiny red dr. martens boots I know, I know Everybody wants my dr. martens boots Went into a pub to get a beer When everybody stopped talking and started to stare The pub owner said; you’ll get anything for free But I know what he wanted out of me I can’t just give away my new air wear Then I could go around naked for what I care My martens is the only thing I wear My martens is the only thing I hold dear
