ON THIS DAY IN 1966
The merger, set to become official in 1970, was a strategic move to consolidate the best elements of both leagues. It created a single, stronger entity that could harness the growing popularity of professional football. The agreement included the merging of the two leagues' schedules, the establishment of a common draft, and the creation of two conferences: the American Football Conference (AFC) and the National Football Conference (NFC).
One of the most significant outcomes of the merger was the introduction of the Super Bowl, the championship game pitting the best team from each conference against each other. The first Super Bowl was played in January 1967, even before the merger was fully implemented, and has since become one of the most watched and celebrated sporting events in the wo...

The Player Who ACCIDENTALLY SIGNED An NFL CONTRACT | Jim Grabowski (1966 Packers)
Have you ever accidentally signed an NFL contract? No? Well, former Illinois fullback Jim Grabowski has. At the 1966 NFL Draft, the Green Bay Packers selected Grabowski; the Miami Dolphins did the same at the 1966 AFL Draft. And instead of letting the two teams get into a bidding war with each other like he and his attorney originally intended, he accidentally made a critical mistake that might have cost him a good chunk of money, and may have been an omen to his career in professional football.

The Cowboys Spent SIX HOURS on One NFL Draft Pick | Mel Renfro (1964 NFL Draft)
Imagine a team spending six hours on one draft pick. Well, as absurd as this sounds, the Dallas Cowboys did this. In the 1964 NFL Draft, the Dallas Cowboys took two hours to make their first round selection, and six hours to make their second. This is the story behind the absurdly long times it took the Cowboys to draft Scott Appleton and Mel Renfro
