1923 Great Kantō earthquake
The Great Kantō earthquake (関東大震災, Kantō daishinsai) struck the Kantō Plain on the Japanese main island of Honshū at 11:58:44 a.m. JST (2:58:44 UTC) on Saturday, September 1, 1923. Varied accounts indicate the duration of the earthquake was between four and ten minutes.
The earthquake had a magnitude of 7.9 on the moment magnitude scale (Mw), with its focus deep beneath Izu Ōshima Island in Sagami Bay. The cause was a rupture of part of the convergent boundary where the Philippine Sea Plate is subducting beneath the Okhotsk Plate along the line of the Sagami Trough.
Earthquake
This earthquake devastated Tokyo, the port city of Yokohama, and the surrounding prefectures of Chiba, Kanagawa, and Shizuoka, and caused widespread damage throughout the Kantō region. Its force was so great in Kamakura, over 60 km (37 mi) from the epicenter, it moved the Great Buddha statue, which weighs about 93 short tons (84,000 kg), almost two feet.
Estimated casualties totaled about 142,800 deaths, including about 40,000 who went missing and were presumed dead. The damage from this natural disaster was the greatest sustained by prewar Japan. In 1960, the government declared September 1, the anniversary of the quake, as an annual "Disaster Prevention Day".

A Kantō earthquake (関東地震, kantō jishin) is a megathrust earthquake occurring in the Kantō region of Japan that originate from slippage in the Sagami Trough. Kantō earthquakes are thought to occur with a 200-year return period.

The Japanese imperialists killed tens of thousands of innocent Koreans and this atrocity was a holocaust unprecedented in human history. The Korean people still remember that heinous crime with their hearts burning with towering anger and hatred against the Japanese imperialists.
The holocaust perpetrated by the Japanese imperialists in the Kanto area was an organized and premeditated crime, in which they reduced innocent Koreans to scapegoats for maintaining power. It was, at the same time, a hideous crime against humanity that resulted from the constitutional brutality of the samurais.
The genocide was a thrice-cursed inhuman crime that could be perpetrated only by the human butchers steeped in chauvinism to the marrow.
The bloody mass killings of Koreans in the wake of the great Kanto quake are just a part of numerous crimes committed by the Japanese imperialists against the Korean people. It is only a short story in the history of the Japanese imperialist aggressors, characterized by the invasion, plunder, destruction and massacre.
In the past century, the Japanese imperialists occupied Korea and committed untold sins against the Korean nation, for which Japan should atone for all ages. However, the Japanese reactionaries are making desperate efforts to evade their due legal and moral responsibility.
Such desperate and persistent mischievous behavior of the Japanese reactionaries only adds fuel to the burning will of the Korean people to surely force Japan to pay dearly for the crimes. Japan is inviting destruction irretrievable with anything.
Japan will have to pay dearly for all crimes committed by the Japanese imperialists against the Korean people, including the massacre of Koreans in the wake of the great Kanto quake.

Heinous Chauvinism against Koreans
Recorded in the crime-woven history of the Japanese imperialists is the great Kanto earthquake during which they killed a large number of Koreans resident in Japan and inflicted sufferings on them.
A great earthquake measuring 7.9 on the Richter Scale unprecedented in the history of Japan hit the Kanto area on the morning of September 1, 1923. It destroyed hundreds of thousands of houses and other buildings in a moment and caused conflagration one after another, leaving over 1.2 million victims. More than 200 000 people lost their lives under the collapsed buildings and were burnt to death.
At that time, the residents in the disaster-stricken area raised their voices of protest against their government for failing to take any immediate relief measures.
In order to divert elsewhere the dissatisfaction of the enraged public on them, the Japanese authorities spread false rumours that Koreans were raising uprisings, setting fires and poisoning wells. They also issued a “royal ordinance” No. 401 on mercilessly killing the Koreans resident in Japan by labelling them as the “enemies”.
According to this, the Japanese army, gendarmerie, police, “vigilante corps” formed with civilians and other right-wing hooligans were mobilized to kill more than 23 000 Koreans in a cold-blooded way, which went beyond human imagination.
Nearly a century has passed since then. However, far from making sincere apology and reparation for the massacre of the Koreans, Japan has persisted in an attempt to distort its crime-woven history and taken every opportunity to discriminate against the Koreans resident in its country and suppress them.
The following are typical examples: The random shooting at the Central Hall of the General Association of Korean Residents in Japan (Chongryon), the act of vandalism at a Korean kindergarten in Tsurumi, the facts that last year, the Japanese government excluded the childcare facilities under Korean schools from application of the “system for free infant education and upbringing”, that the Saitama city authorities followed the example to prohibit the supply of medical masks to the kindergarteners of Korean school, and that, in May, Japanese right-wing gangsters thronged to Korea University with placards, which read “Korea University is a murderous university”, “Tokyo Metropolis should cancel the approval of its corporate body”, etc., slinging mud at Chongryon and its university.
These are state-sponsored crimes openly committed with the connivance of the Japanese authorities that engage in imbuing their whole society with chauvinism against Koreans in a systematic way after setting the anti-DPRK hostility as a state policy.
The Korean people will never forget the hot-blooded outcry from the souls of victims of the great Kanto earthquake.

A list of Korean victims killed during the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923... including those murdered by Japanese soldiers... has been found among official Japanese records.
The Japanese government office responsible for providing relief at the time... had recorded more than 50-thousand earthquake victims... and two Japanese researchers identified 71 Korean victims among them.
This is the first time Japan's official data has been found to support the Koreans' death during the Great Kanto Earthquake.
So far, historical records from Korean newspaper Dongnip Sinmun published in 1923 Shanghai,... have shown more than 6,000 Koreans were massacred.
Official records during Korean President Rhee Seung-man's administration in 1952 also provides a list of two-hundred-ninety murder cases.
"The Japanese government has been trying to deny or downsize the issue of Koreans massacred during the Kanto Earthquake. But this list of names found among official Japanese records is clear evidence."
Some experts believe the massacre contributed to the deaths of more Koreans than the earthquake, as most Korean victims lived on the outskirts of Tokyo, while the earthquake struck the center of the city.
"After the earthquake, a major civil unrest in Japanese society led to rumors that Koreans poisoned wells and planned a riot... which inflamed anti-Korean sentiment."
The number of Koreans killed is expected to increase after a thourough review of Japan's list of earthquake victims is complete.

Many Japanese believe that Tokyo is susceptible to major earthquakes every 70-100 years. The last was exactly a century ago on September 1, 1923, a massive earthquake that reduced a thriving Tokyo to rubble. 100 years later, what do we know about this awful tragedy?
The Great Kanto earthquake showed what a major event can do to a big city. Actually, it was an avalanche of disasters: a major earthquake, a 12-meter-high tsunami, aftershocks, firestorms and fire tornados that had never been seen before. These were followed by a major outbreak of typhoid fever, countless refugees, a typhoon and serious shortages of food and water. The scale of the catastrophe was enormous: between 100,000-140,000 people died from the earthquake and fires with a further 40,000 missing. Three million people were left homeless.
In this film, we show unique historic images and tell stories that cannot be read in textbooks. Earthquakes are recurring events and, as if in slow motion, we can see how future earthquakes are preparing right now.

All-Time Greatest Crime Committed by Japanese Imperialists

97 years have elapsed since the hideous massacre of Koreans by the Japanese imperialists in the Kanto area.
The Japanese imperialists killed tens of thousands of innocent Koreans and this atrocity was a holocaust unprecedented in human history. The Korean people still remember that heinous crime with their hearts burning with towering anger and hatred against the Japanese imperialists.
The holocaust perpetrated by the Japanese imperialists in the Kanto area was an organized and premeditated crime, in which they reduced innocent Koreans to scapegoats for maintaining power. It was, at the same time, a hideous crime against humanity that resulted from the constitutional brutality of the samurais.
The genocide was a thrice-cursed inhuman crime that could be perpetrated only by the human butchers steeped in chauvinism to the marrow.
The bloody mass killings of Koreans in the wake of the great Kanto quake are just a part of numerous crimes committed by the Japanese imperialists against the Korean people. It is only a short story in the history of the Japanese imperialist aggressors, characterized by the invasion, plunder, destruction and massacre.
In the past century, the Japanese imperialists occupied Korea and committed untold sins against the Korean nation, for which Japan should atone for all ages. However, the Japanese reactionaries are making desperate efforts to evade their due legal and moral responsibility.
Such desperate and persistent mischievous behavior of the Japanese reactionaries only adds fuel to the burning will of the Korean people to surely force Japan to pay dearly for the crimes. Japan is inviting destruction irretrievable with anything.
Japan will have to pay dearly for all crimes committed by the Japanese imperialists against the Korean people, including the massacre of Koreans in the wake of the great Kanto quake.

Heinous Chauvinism against Koreans
Recorded in the crime-woven history of the Japanese imperialists is the great Kanto earthquake during which they killed a large number of Koreans resident in Japan and inflicted sufferings on them.
A great earthquake measuring 7.9 on the Richter Scale unprecedented in the history of Japan hit the Kanto area on the morning of September 1, 1923. It destroyed hundreds of thousands of houses and other buildings in a moment and caused conflagration one after another, leaving over 1.2 million victims. More than 200 000 people lost their lives under the collapsed buildings and were burnt to death.
At that time, the residents in the disaster-stricken area raised their voices of protest against their government for failing to take any immediate relief measures.
In order to divert elsewhere the dissatisfaction of the enraged public on them, the Japanese authorities spread false rumours that Koreans were raising uprisings, setting fires and poisoning wells. They also issued a “royal ordinance” No. 401 on mercilessly killing the Koreans resident in Japan by labelling them as the “enemies”.
According to this, the Japanese army, gendarmerie, police, “vigilante corps” formed with civilians and other right-wing hooligans were mobilized to kill more than 23 000 Koreans in a cold-blooded way, which went beyond human imagination.
Nearly a century has passed since then. However, far from making sincere apology and reparation for the massacre of the Koreans, Japan has persisted in an attempt to distort its crime-woven history and taken every opportunity to discriminate against the Koreans resident in its country and suppress them.
The following are typical examples: The random shooting at the Central Hall of the General Association of Korean Residents in Japan (Chongryon), the act of vandalism at a Korean kindergarten in Tsurumi, the facts that last year, the Japanese government excluded the childcare facilities under Korean schools from application of the “system for free infant education and upbringing”, that the Saitama city authorities followed the example to prohibit the supply of medical masks to the kindergarteners of Korean school, and that, in May, Japanese right-wing gangsters thronged to Korea University with placards, which read “Korea University is a murderous university”, “Tokyo Metropolis should cancel the approval of its corporate body”, etc., slinging mud at Chongryon and its university.
These are state-sponsored crimes openly committed with the connivance of the Japanese authorities that engage in imbuing their whole society with chauvinism against Koreans in a systematic way after setting the anti-DPRK hostility as a state policy.
The Korean people will never forget the hot-blooded outcry from the souls of victims of the great Kanto earthquake.

1923 Great Kantō earthquake
The Great Kantō earthquake (関東大震災, Kantō daishinsai) struck the Kantō Plain on the Japanese main island of Honshū at 11:58:44 a.m. JST (2:58:44 UTC) on Saturday, September 1, 1923. Varied accounts indicate the duration of the earthquake was between four and ten minutes.
The earthquake had a magnitude of 7.9 on the moment magnitude scale (Mw), with its focus deep beneath Izu Ōshima Island in Sagami Bay. The cause was a rupture of part of the convergent boundary where the Philippine Sea Plate is subducting beneath the Okhotsk Plate along the line of the Sagami Trough.

This earthquake devastated Tokyo, the port city of Yokohama, and the surrounding prefectures of Chiba, Kanagawa, and Shizuoka, and caused widespread damage throughout the Kantō region. Its force was so great in Kamakura, over 60 km (37 mi) from the epicenter, it moved the Great Buddha statue, which weighs about 93 short tons (84,000 kg), almost two feet.
Estimated casualties totaled about 142,800 deaths, including about 40,000 who went missing and were presumed dead. The damage from this natural disaster was the greatest sustained by prewar Japan. In 1960, the government declared September 1, the anniversary of the quake, as an annual "Disaster Prevention Day".
