Breaking the Silence: Crash Course Film History #10
Nothing changed movies like the arrival of synchronous sound. NOTHING! Acting, directing, cinematography, and presentation all had to be rethought. Some studios were more quick to take on the challenge while others waited until the last moment. Some actors made graceful transitions while others struggled with the new format. But this was the big turning point and a major completion point to what movies would ultimately become.

The Strange World of Early Sound Films
In the late 1920s the first Sound Films or 'Talkies' were released. Following the success of the Jazz Singer Hollywood was keen to release fully talking films to capitalise on its success. However, the first years of the talkies produced some strange results. As a result of the difficulty studios had in producing sound films these new pictures, many of the early sound films suffered from technical and artistic problems. Nevertheless, as the technology developed and Hollywood adapted, these issues were overcome begining the industry that we know today.

Sound is often the unsung hero of movies. But what we hear in a film usually isn't a reflection of what things sound like in real life. Instead film sound can be incredibly expressive and impressionistic. [Video Contains Spoilers for The Batman]

Understanding Movies 101 -- Sound in Movies: Some Basics
If you like this video or this channel, please consider donating to this channel to cover my expenses. The video has been demonetized. A gift of $10 or $5 or $1, via the "Applause" button right below the video really helps me out. Thank you!
This is the most basic of lessons on sound in movies. Sound--music, sound effects, dialogue, and voiceover--is an overlooked part of movie criticism and even basic judgments about movies. This video will help you listen a bit better to movies than you already have.
Included in the video are discussions about film music, composers, and the difference that music makes when it's played over a movie.
I will introduce you to the terms "diegetic" and "non-diegetic" sound.
See joshmatthews.org for more great movie criticism.

DIEGETIC VS NON-DIEGETIC SOUND EXPLAINED
Film sound comes in two basic types — diegetic vs non-diegetic. Each has a role in the cinematic experience, and in this video, we’re going to explain everything. Including the definitions of each type, their most common and not-so-common applications, and how filmmakers can use the soundtrack to tell better stories.
We always say that we “watch” movies, but have you ever really “listened” to a movie? There is quite a lot of storytelling happening on the soundtrack, but we usually take it for granted. Naturally, our eyes do the heavy lifting as they process all that visual information, but film sound is actually an unsung hero in the overall experience.
WHAT IS DIEGETIC SOUND
To understand diegetic vs non-diegetic sound in film, we first have to understand what “diegesis” means. The concept of diegesis goes all the way back to the Ancient Greeks and it refers to “the act of narrating a story,” including the details the narrator adds or leaves out. In film, this essentially means “the world of the film and everything in it.” And when it comes to film sound, if the characters can hear it, it’s diegetic; otherwise, it’s non-diegetic.
But which is which and why does it matter? Let’s continue with a breakdown of diegetic sound.
DIEGETIC SOUND IN FILM
Again, if the characters can hear it, it’s diegetic sound — even if they only hear it in their head. This is called internal diegetic sound and includes thoughts, narration, music, etc. We can also divide diegetic sound into two subcategories: on-screen and off-screen. This refers to the source of the sound. When we hear birds in a forest scene but can’t see them, it’s still considered diegetic.
NON-DIEGETIC SOUND IN FILM
On the other hand, non-diegetic sound is everything the characters cannot hear. This includes sound effects, some forms of narration, and, the most common element, the musical score. But sometimes sound can actually switch between diegetic vs non-diegetic, which is called trans-diegetic sound. This often helps to blur the line between fantasy and reality.
There are countless ways to use film sound to lure us into or shock us out of the cinematic experience. Now that you know the basics of diegetic vs non-diegetic sound, it’s your turn to make us truly listen to a movie.

About me:
I've been making short films for 20 years, starting at age 11. I directed my first feature film, Bad is Bad, in 2010. Made for only $6,000, the film went on to reach over 7 million views and garner critical acclaim. More recently, my short film, Will "The Machine", screened and won awards at film festivals around the world. Released online in 2019, it reached over 1 million views in just a month. I also work as a video editor, cutting ads for clients such as Apple, Netflix, and Beats by Dre.

Getting clean cinematic audio in your film doesn't have to cost a fortune. Here's my best tips and tricks for recording great audio as a low budget filmmaker.
One thing I forgot to mention - get some decent over the ear headphones (not earbuds) to monitor your sound on set. This topic was too big for one video!
Disclaimer: 7RYMS sent me their mics for free, but had no say over my review or how I featured them. The noise floor was higher than the DJI Mics, but they were reliable and I think they're a good value.

Sound is often the unsung hero of movies. But what we hear in a film usually isn't a reflection of what things sound like in real life. Instead film sound can be incredibly expressive and impressionistic. [Video Contains Spoilers for The Batman]
An important source for this video is Dolby's interview with the sound team. If you're interested in more about the film's sound design it's worth watching: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uZ_3Kdm_ZhE
