What Happens When You Fire An 1851 Navy Race Revolver ?
See super fast revolver fanning in this video!
In this video I explore an 1851 Navy single action revolver race gun. Even though it still works in single action only, just like the originals from the 19th century, it is capable of firing a shot every .05 seconds or even faster depending on the shooter's skills. I explain what makes this extreme performance possible as well as showing general operation of this fantastic revolver.
Live ammo was 38 special, full case bp compressed, 158 gr swc.

From the Vault: Wild Bill Hickok's Colt 1851 Navy
Get ready for a History Rush, folks! Brownells Gun Tech™ Keith Ford is at Rock Island Auction Co. to give us a long look at a Colt 1851 Navy revolver attributed to Old West legend James Butler "Wild Bill" Hickok. While the gun's provenance isn't perfect, Rock Island's Joel Colander points to several factors that indicate it WAS Wild Bill's Colt. It is one of a pair of matching ivory-gripped, heavily engraved 1851s only 17 serial number apart, formerly owned by the Buffalo Bill Museum in Cody, Wyoming. The serial numbers fit the period when Wild Bill was known to carry Colt 1851s with ivory grips. Hickok historian Joseph Rosa has concluded that this gun was indeed owned by Wild Bill. Rosa is no pushover: he has also disproven Hickok ownership of several guns attributed to the law man, scout...

In 1855, Prussian customs officials in Antwerp discovered a shipment of 3,000 Colt 1851 Navy model revolvers (and their accouterments) hidden in bales of cotton being shipped from New York to Russia. Prussia was a neutral power in the ongoing Crimean War, but had prohibited transit of arms across its borders. Squeezed by a British blockade of its ports in the Baltic, Russia tried to being in these pistols through Prussia anyway, and was caught (much to the embarrassment of Colt, who was trying to sells his revolvers to the British at the same time).
After three years of stalling, the Prussian government decided to keep 1,000 of the revolvers for issue to its own navy, and sell the remaining 2,000 at auction. The navy revolvers and their accessories (powder flasks and cappers) were stamped with “KM” (Königliche Marine, or Royal Navy) and sequential inventory numbers. They would be the first repeating pistols issued to the Prussian Navy.

Rosa is no pushover: he has also disproven Hickok ownership of several guns attributed to the law man, scout, gambler, showman, and gunfighter. Rosa believes this gun and the matching Colt 1851 in the Cody were the same two Colts auctioned off to help cover Hickok's funeral expenses after that fatal poker game in Deadwood, Dakota Territory. They sold for only 25¢ a piece! A shocking price for guns that cost a pretty penny when they left the Colt factory. The Rock Island gun is not in mint condition. There's some holster wear, and it's definitely been used but WELL cared for. The engraving is still crisp, and the nicely aged ivory grips are in beautiful condition.
