Ashwini Vaishnav's Anger and Dhankhar's 'RSS Love': Parliament Highlights, 1st Aug 2024
In today's Parliament session, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav displayed notable anger, silencing opposition MPs while avoiding any mention of the recent rail accidents that resulted in 17 deaths. Instead, he focused on deflecting criticism and discussed the tag of "reel minister" attributed to him. Vaishnav also compared the NDA and UPA governments, accusing the UPA of not implementing the Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system. His speech concluded amidst calls for his resignation. Meanwhile, in the Rajya Sabha, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar's comments about the RSS being a reputable organization faced a point of order from Digvijay Singh, which was ultimately dismissed.

Israel's Netanyahu ordered Ismail Haniyeh's killing to scuttle peace talks: Former Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Oman and UAE, Talmiz Ahmad, to Karan Thapar for The Wire.
...........................................
One of India’s foremost experts on the Middle East and a former Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Oman and UAE, Talmiz Ahmad, has said that he believes Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu could have ordered the killing of the Hamas leader and former Prime Minister of Palestine, Ismail Haniyeh, to scuttle the peace talks because if a successful ceasefire had been agreed to Netanyahu would have lost his job as Prime Minister of Israel.
Mr. Ahmad does not believe that the Biden Administration in Washington would have been consulted leave aside had given prior clearance before the assassination of Haniyeh. He also believes that although Hamas and Iran will retaliate – and separately Hezbollah for the killing of Fuad Shukr 24 hours earlier – they will do so in their own time and in a measured way because they do not wish to provoke a wider regional conflict.
I am only giving you the big main points made by Mr. Ahmad. This is a very topical interview, on an issue that only happened in the late hours of last night i.e. early this morning. With his experience and insight, Mr. Ahmad is able to give us an invaluable analysis of the issues involved which is why this is an interview you should see if you want to understand why Haniyeh was killed and what could be the outcome.

Just a few reminders for everyone who's just become aware of us, in order to keep these briefings from being several hours long, I can't cover everything. I'm probably covering 1% of the world events when we conduct these briefings, so please remember that if I left it out, it doesn't necessarily mean that it's unimportant. Also, remember that I do these briefings quite often, so I might have covered an issue previously that you might not see if you are only watching our most recent videos. I'm also doing this in our spare time, so again I fully admit that these briefings aren't even close to being perfect; I'm going for a healthy blend of speed and quality. If I were to wait and only post a brief when it's "perfect" I would never post anything at all. So expect some minor errors here and there. If there is a major error or correction that needs to be made, I will post it here in the description, and verbally address it in the next briefing. Also, thanks for reading this far. It is always surprising the number of people that don't actually read the description box to find more information.

Modi's Ukraine visit will "make amends" & will be "a rebalancing" with the West; "bear hug" with Putin was "a setback . most unfortunately badly timed"; "Biden is rethinking some of his enthusiasm to India": Shashi Tharoor
...........................................
In an interview to discuss a visit to Ukraine in August which Prime Minister Modi is reported to be considering, Shashi Tharoor has said it would “make amends” and be “a rebalancing” for Modi’s visit to Moscow three weeks ago. Mr. Tharoor described Mr. Modi’s “bear hug” with Vladimir Putin as “a setback” adding it was “most unfortunately badly timed”. Mr. Tharoor said the bear hug, which coincided with a major NATO Summit in Washington and a Russian attack on a children’s hospital in Ukraine which killed 37, gave the wrong impression to the Western world. He said the same about a phrase in the Indo-Russian joint statement which spoke about the war “around Ukraine” rather than in Ukraine. He suggested that a visit to Ukraine would make amends for both.
In a 25-minute interview to Karan Thapar for The Wire, Shashi Tharoor, a former Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, a former Under Secretary General of the UN and a four time Congress MP, said “(President) Biden is rethinking some of his enthusiasm to India” and the message being conveyed by the US is “we have other partners in Asia”. Therefore, Mr. Tharoor said “tough conversations from Washington are not entirely surprising”.
Mr. Tharoor said so far Washington has been “indulgent” of India’s increasing reliance on Russian oil and, although not happy with Delhi’s refusal to criticize Russia for the invasion of Ukraine, has sought to treat this as an irritant and not allowed it to damage relations.
But, at the same time, Mr. Tharoor added there are signs that Biden could be “rethinking some of his enthusiasm to India”. In the interview Mr. Tharoor lists the reasons which lead him to this conclusion.
Mr. Tharoor said its possible that “Moscow will be miffed” by Prime Minster Modi’s Ukraine visit. There is, therefore, a danger that India could end up “caught between two stools”.
I am only giving you the big broad points made by Mr. Tharoor. This is not a precis or paraphrase of the interview. There is a lot more in the interview which you should see for yourself. I am simply recounting from memory the headline points he has made. I strongly recommend you see the full interview to understand the context as well as the details with which Mr. Tharoor has spoken.

Modi's Ukraine visit would be "a mistake . should be ruled out"; "can't see what traction from a visit at the moment"; "looks as if we are buckling under pressure": former Foreign Secretary Krishnan Srinivasan to Karan Thapar
...........................................
In strong and unequivocal criticism of the possibility Prime Minister Modi might visit Ukraine in August, one of India’s former Foreign Secretaries has said it would be “a mistake” and “should be ruled out”. Krishnan Srinivasan says “I can’t see what traction from a visit to Ukraine at the moment”. He said it “looks as if we are buckling under pressure”. He added: “I would be disappointed if the PM goes to Ukraine … I can’t see a positive outcome.”
In a 24-minute interview to Karan Thapar for The Wire, Krishnan Srinivasan, who is also a former Deputy Secretary General of the Commonwealth, strongly defended India’s multi-lateral foreign policy and its assertion of strategic autonomy. He argued that a visit to the Ukraine would undermine this rather than re-assert it, as the Indian government spokesman has claimed. It would look as if Mr. Modi is responding under pressure from Washington. Mr. Srinivasan said no country should be permitted to dictate India’s foreign policy.
Mr. Srinivasan argued that if the Prime Minister has a message to send to Ukraine he should do so at a lower level rather than himself convey it.
I am only giving you the big main points made by Mr. Srinivasan. This is not a precis or paraphrase of the interview. Mr. Srinivasan has said a lot more and I will leave you to see the interview and hear it for yourself.

U2 - The Unforgettable Fire
Ice.
Your only rivers run cold,
These city lights,
They shine as silver and gold,
Dug from the night.
Your eyes as black as coal.
Walk on by, walk on through,
Walk till you run.
And dont look back.
For here, I am.
Carnival, the wheels fly and the colors spin
Through alcohol.
Red wine that punctures the skin.
Face to face in a dry and waterless place.
Walk on by, walk on through
So sad to beseige your love so,
Head on, stay this time.
Stay tonight, in a lie.
Im only asking but I think that you know.
Come on take me away.
Come on take me away.
Come on take me home.
Home again.
And if the mountain should crumble,
Or disappear into the sea.
Not a tear, no not I stay in this time.
Stay tonight in a light.
Ever after, this love in time.
And if you save it all, save...

Or disappear into the sea
Not a tear, no not I
Stay in this time
Stay tonight in a lie
Ever after
This love in time
And if you save your love
Save it all tonight
Don't push me too far
Don't push me too far
Tonight
Tonight
