Orte is a town and comune (municipality) in the province of Viterbo, in the Italian region Latium Lazio, located about 60 kilometres (37mi) north of Rome and about 24 kilometres (15mi) east of Viterbo.
Geography
Orte is situated in the Tiber valley on a high tuff cliff, encircled to North and East from a handle of the Tevere river. It is an important road and rail hub.
History
The Etruscans inhabited the area from the 6th century BC and called it *Hurta, as testified by the findings in a necropolis nearby, now preserved in the Vatican Museums. Orte was theatre of battles between Etruscans and Romans (310 and 283 BC), near the Vadimone lake, in both of which the Romans were victorious.
The Romans domination made it the municipality of Horta (also Hortanum). Under the rule of Augustus it received numerous public works. Subsequently, because of its strategic position, Orte was occupied by the Ostrogoths, the Byzantines and the Lombards. During the late 9th to early 10th century, it was, along with much of central Italy, a stronghold of, or threatened by the Saracens.
Howard E. Barker (born 28 June 1946) is a British playwright.
The Theatre of Catastrophe
Barker has coined the term "Theatre of Catastrophe" to describe his work. His plays often explore violence, sexuality, the desire for power, and human motivation.
Rejecting the widespread notion that an audience should share a single response to the events onstage, Barker works to fragment response, forcing each viewer to wrestle with the play alone. "We must overcome the urge to do things in unison" he writes. "To chant together, to hum banal tunes together, is not collectivity." Where other playwrights might clarify a scene, Barker seeks to render it more complex, ambiguous, and unstable.
Only through a tragic renaissance, Barker argues, will beauty and poetry return to the stage. "Tragedy liberates language from banality" he asserts. "It returns poetry to speech."
Themes
Barker frequently turns to historical events for inspiration. His play Scenes from an Execution, for example, centers on the aftermath of the Battle of Lepanto (1571) and a fictional female artist commissioned to create a commemorative painting of the Venetian victory over the Ottoman fleet. Scenes from an Execution, originally written for Radio 3 and starring Glenda Jackson in 1984, was later adapted for the stage. The short play Judith revolves around the Biblical story of Judith, the legendary heroine who decapitated the invading general Holofernes.
The Harz is the highest mountain range in Northern Germany and its rugged terrain extends across parts of Lower Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia. The name Harz derives from the Middle High German word Hardt or Hart (mountain forest), Latinized as Hercynia. The legendary Brocken is the highest summit in the Harz with a height of 1,141.1 metres (3,744ft) above sea level. The Wurmberg (971 metres (3,186ft)) is the highest peak located entirely within Lower Saxony.
Geography
Location and extent
The Harz has a length of 110 kilometres (68mi), stretching from the town of Seesen in the northwest to Eisleben in the east, and a width of 35 kilometres (22mi). It occupies an area of 2,226 square kilometres (859sqmi), and is divided into the Upper Harz (Oberharz) in the northwest, which is up to 800 m high, apart from the 1,100 m high Brocken massif, and the Lower Harz (Unterharz) in the east which is up to around 400 m high and whose plateaus are capable of supporting arable farming.
The following districts (Kreise) fall wholly or partly within the Harz: Goslar and Osterode am Harz in the west, Harz and Mansfeld-Südharz in the north and east, and Nordhausen in the south. The districts of the Upper Harz are Goslar and Osterode (both in Lower Saxony), whilst the Lower Harz is on the territory of Harz and Mansfeld-Südharz districts (both in Saxony-Anhalt). The Upper Harz is generally higher and features fir forests, whilst the Lower Harz gradually descends into the surrounding area and has deciduous forests interspersed with meadows.

In Rehearsal: The Possibilities by Howard Barker
Howard Barker forces us to face innumerable themes of war in The Possibilities. Through various snapshots that take the audience to suspended places in time, our collective human weakness to continually repeat our cruel history is ripped open for examination. The human psyche can be tormented and tricked through oppression, guilt, and feelings of helplessness. As these sensibilities are manipulated, so is our ability to see all the possibilities available to us, and our right to stand by our personal morality.

"I came to the city. I saw the people were filthy. And those who were not filthy were still filthy..."
Sodom. The day before the city's total annihilation. Among the grimy tables of a run-down café, an angel tells Lot that God wants him to flee, before the city is obliterated. However, Lot's irresistible wife has other ideas... As the angel and Lot's wife embark on a dangerous game of seduction, cruelty and desire, we are drawn ever deeper into the dark and impenetrable forest that is the marriage between Lot and the bewitching woman he worships...
"I must learn to keep my mouth shut when there are angels in the room..."
This November, the Print Room presents the UK premiere of this powerful and imaginative Howard Barker play. A haunting and deeply moving portrait of a marriage in the face of apocalyptic destruction, LOT AND HIS GOD is a beautifully witty reimagining of the biblical story of Lot, exposing the human truth behind the legend...
Howard Barker has been acclaimed as "England's greatest living dramatist" (The Times). His plays challenge, unsettle and expose with a vital energy, poetic language and vivid imagination.
