Neil deGrasse Tyson Explains The Weirdness of Quantum Physics
Quantum mechanics is the area of physics that deals with the behaviour of atoms and particles on microscopic scales. Since its inception, the many counter-intuitive aspects and results of quantum mechanics have provoked strong philosophical debates and many interpretations.
Neil deGrasse Tyson explains quantum physics in a way that is understandable even for the lay person. In Quantum Mechanics there is no such thing as absolute certainty when looking for something. This phenomenon is known as Uncertainty Principle and was Introduced first in 1927 by the German physicist Werner Heisenberg. Heisenberg realized that one implication of quantum physics is that the act of measurement always disturbs the object measured.
Neil deGrasse Tyson explains that the whole computer world is based on t...

In this Big Think interview, theoretical physicist Sean Carroll discusses the concept of time and the mysteries surrounding its properties. He notes that while we use the word "time" frequently in everyday language, the real puzzles arise when we consider the properties of time, such as the past, present, and future, and the fact that we can affect the future but not the past.
Carroll also discusses the concept of entropy, which is a measure of how disorganized or random a system is, and the second law...

Correction to what I say at 14:22 -- The KATRIN experiment does not look for neutrinoless double beta decay, it's trying to measure the absolute neutrino masses. There are several other experiments looking for neutrinoless double beta decay. Sorry about that mixup!
Some physicists are claiming that there is something "wrong" with our understanding of the universe. Oftentimes, it's just to justify asking for funding for new experiments, a better detector, a new telescope, a bigger collider, but what if there's something more than that? Do we have evidence of new physics? Or not? In this video, we will look at dark matter and dark energy, quantum gravity, the mass of the Higgs-boson, neutrino masses, and the matter-antimatter asymmetry.

Neil deGrasse Tyson explains that the whole computer world is based on the principle of Quantum Physics. We are able to manipulate the electrical properties of silicon only because we can study the wave nature of electrons.
Our daily routines are often governed by technology that is directly related to Quantum Physics, thus our lives rest upon these fundamental scientific discoveries.
Another hard concept to grasp is Quantum entanglement. Einstein referred to it as "spooky action at a distance. It occurs when a pair or group of particles is generated, interact, or share spatial proximity in a way such that the quantum state of each particle of the pair or group cannot be described independently of the state of the others. But Neil deGrasse Tyson and Lawrence Krauss explain this concept with everyday life examples which makes it a little bit easier to understand.
As Neil deGrasse Tyson points out, the first quantum phenomena were observed more than a century ago. However scientists are still learning about this realm of our universe.

The mind-bending physics of time | Sean Carroll

In this Big Think interview, theoretical physicist Sean Carroll discusses the concept of time and the mysteries surrounding its properties. He notes that while we use the word "time" frequently in everyday language, the real puzzles arise when we consider the properties of time, such as the past, present, and future, and the fact that we can affect the future but not the past.
Carroll also discusses the concept of entropy, which is a measure of how disorganized or random a system is, and the second law of thermodynamics, which states that there is a natural tendency for things in the universe to go from a state of low entropy to high entropy. He explains that the arrow of time, or the perceived difference between the past and the future, arises due to the influence of the Big Bang and the fact that the universe began in a state of low entropy.
Carroll also touches on the possibility of time travel and the concept of the multiverse.

About Sean Carroll:
Dr. Sean Carroll is Homewood Professor of Natural Philosophy — in effect, a joint appointment between physics and philosophy — at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, and fractal faculty at the Santa Fe Institute. Most of his career has been spent doing research on cosmology, field theory, and gravitation, looking at topics such as dark matter and dark energy, modified gravity, topological defects, extra dimensions, and violations of fundamental symmetries. These days, his focus has shifted to more foundational questions, both in quantum mechanics (origin of probability, emergence of space and time) and statistical mechanics (entropy and the arrow of time, emergence and causation, dynamics of complexity), bringing a more philosophical dimension to his work.

Press release - written by Stewart Lee:
I’m nearly 50. I don’t know what’s going on anymore, I’ll admit. The internet’s availability of all sources ever simultaneously has destroyed my understanding of cultural development as a logical progression. All music is time travel, forward and backward both at once, now.
But three years go my friend Simon Oakes, of prog-psych conceptualists Suns Of The Tundra, directed me to a Youtube clip of The Physics House Band. Impossibly youthful looking, and sounding like vintage Seventies stadium-prog behemoth, a Yes or a Rush, but stripped of any errors of taste and judgment, fed amphetamines, made ashamed of their record collections, slapped in front of the whole school, immersed instead in post-rock procedure and practise, and made to apply their obvious talent and ability to a more worthwhile end than their forebears.
Three years on here’s their second album, a super-dense sci-fi mindfuck of a thing, music scholarship charity case keyboards in combat with squally spacerock guitars, dub boom bass and multi-time-sig clatter; a territory staked out over mushrooms at break-time, on the top floor of the multi-story car park, overlooking the ‘70s Bauhaus shopping centre concrete functional fountain square, but now gone all Escher in the aftermath, like a black and white architectural schematic drawing dipped in tie-dye.
Mercury Fountain doesn’t stop, a twenty nine minute surge of tracks that it would be a crime to split apart, the kind of part work The Physics House Band’s progenitors aimed at but never quite produced, settling instead for gatefold sleeves that gave the illusion of structure and intent; a fulfillment of the Red-era King Crimson manifesto, channeled by boy-conduits that needn’t have even have known the source documents, learning their lessons instead from hints woven into the post-punk works of Radiohead, Tortoise, The Mars Volta and 21st century sub-krautrock.
Mercury Fountain loads you into a water canon and shoots you out through its intermingled opening tracks, the group finally allowing you a pause for breath at the half way point, during A Thousand Small Spaces; and then you’re kicked out of the airlock back into the Negative Zone again in Obidant, the laws of physics in reverse, Newton’s apples flying upwards past your grasping fists, your hair on end, arching to follow them, until you’re finally abandoned into the techtonic drift of Mobius Strip II.
It’s a two black Americano experience that makes me wish I still had pin-sharp hearing to lose. Another minute would be too much.

Class 12 Semiconductors: We cannot imagine our life without computers today. But what makes a computer tick? What's making this technology grow at such an exponential rate? It's all due to semiconductors. As unbelievable as that might sound, altering the properties of semiconductors allows us to build these computers. In this topic, we will explore the world of semiconductors. It's a journey from what semiconductors are all the way to creating building blocks of these computers.
Khan Academy is a nonprofit organization with the mission of providing a free, world-class education for anyone, anywhere. We offer quizzes, questions, instructional videos, and articles on a range of academic subjects, including math, biology, chemistry, physics, history, economics, finance, grammar, preschool learning, and more. We provide teachers with tools and data so they can help their students develop the skills, habits, and mindsets for success in school and beyond. Khan Academy has been translated into dozens of languages, and 15 million people around the globe learn on Khan Academy every month. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, we would love your help!

'Death Sequence' ~ a new EP feat. a special collaboration with Stewart Lee - releasing on Unearthly Vision on 3rd May!
Pre-order: https://goo.gl/Po6Q6d
+ New headline shows announced:
1 May ~ Bristol, Exchange https://goo.gl/5N4WCG
3 May ~ London, Bush Hall https://goo.gl/BuqWUL
The Physics House Band are Sam Organ (guitar/keys), Adam Hutchison (bass/keys), Dave Morgan (drums) and Miles Spilsbury (saxophone/keys). The four create avant-garde compositions that capture everything from jazz to prog to psych to doom-metal, all combined together with a furious energy transcending to their mind-bending live shows. Their recently completed third record explores further into the expanses of intense darkness and light. Soft ambient synths explode into chaotic battles between angular guitars and saxophones. The gentle moments are softer, the intense moments more visceral than ever. This is a band that has to be experienced live.
The bulk of this record was written over a two week period in a secluded farmhouse turned studio on Start Point, a Devonshire headland located between the English channel and the Celtic Sea. Ideas were stripped back and rebuilt relentlessly over the fortnight until pieces emerged, becoming more chaotic and dense as the cabin fever drew ever closer. This record is a reflection of that time – the madness that comes from such an insular experience, but also the peace and gentleness of being removed from the constant overstimulation of the city.
The Physics House Band have toured performed notable shows with supported the likes of Alt-J, Omar Rorriguez-Lopez, Django Django, Tera Melos, LITE, Jaga Jazzist and gained major support from BBC Radio 6 Music, NPR, Anthony Fantano / The Needle Drop, The Guardian, The Independent, The Quietus + more
