In this exciting chess moment, capturing the opponent's knight can set up an incredible tactical advantage for the player. By using the queen and bishop in coordination, a powerful fork is executed, putting immense pressure on the opponent. The concept of a fork involves attacking two or more pieces simultaneously, and when performed correctly, it can lead to a game-changing position.
The queen and bishop together are highly versatile, with the queen covering a wide range of squares and the bishop controlling key diagonals. When aligned in the right way, they create a potent combination that forces the opponent into a difficult situation. By capturing the opponent’s knight, the player forces them to make tough decisions, usually resulting in the loss of material. The beauty of this move lies in how it showcases the synergy between two of the most powerful pieces on the board.
The tactical brilliance of this capture and fork strategy is that it requires careful planning and precision. Chess is a game of patience, and a well-timed knight capture can shift the momentum in your favor. This move also demonstrates the importance of piece coordination and the ability to spot opportunities during the game.

RULES:
The rules are the same as regular chess except for these changes. You are allowed to capture your own pieces. Castling is allowed when there are pieces in between the rook and king, but all pieces in between are captured and removed from the board. Other than castling, you may not capture multiple of your own pieces in a single move, you still only capture the first piece you move into. The first player to checkmate their opponent, wins.

Differential Geometry | Math History | NJ Wildberger
Differential geometry arises from applying calculus and analytic geometry to curves and surfaces. This video begins with a discussion of planar curves and the work of C. Huygens on involutes and evolutes, and the related notions of curvature and osculating circle. We discuss involutes of the catenary (yielding the tractrix), cycloid and parabola. The evolute of the parabola is a semi-cubical parabola. For space curves we describe the tangent line, osculating plane, principle normal and binormal.
Surfaces were studied by Euler, who investigated curvatures of planar sections and by Gauss, who realized that the product of Euler's two principal curvatures gave a new notion of curvature intrinsic to a surface. Curvature was ultimately extended by Riemann to higher dimensions, and plays today a...

This video is an extract of my original video 'What Is Differential Geometry'. As the length of the previous video is more than an hour, I extracted the 'historical' part and emphasized on that. This video gives you a short but clear idea of how the first seed of differential geometry was sown, the further developments, who were the people who contributed in this field, hyperbolic geometry, and an account on modern differential geometry.

The theory of plane and space curves and surfaces in the three-dimensional Euclidean space formed the basis for development of differential geometry during the 18th century and the 19th century. Differential geometry is closely related to differential topology and the geometric aspects of the theory of differential equations. The differential geometry of surfaces captures many of the key ideas and techniques endemic to this field.

Title: What is Differential geometry?, Explain Differential geometry, Define Differential geometry
Created on: 2018-11-10
Source Link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Differential_geometry
------
Description: Differential geometry is a mathematical discipline that uses the techniques of differential calculus, integral calculus, linear algebra and multilinear algebra to study problems in geometry. The theory of plane and space curves and surfaces in the three-dimensional Euclidean space formed the basis for development of differential geometry during the 18th century and the 19th century. Since the late 19th century, differential geometry has grown into a field concerned more generally with the geometric structures on differentiable manifolds. Differential geometry is closely related to differential topology and the geometric aspects of the theory of differential equations. The differential geometry of surfaces captures many of the key ideas and techniques endemic to this field.

Curvature was ultimately extended by Riemann to higher dimensions, and plays today a major role in modern physics, due to the work of Einstein.

Ciprian Manolescu | Four-dimensional topology
In the Spring 2020 semester, the CMSA will be hosting a lecture series on literature in the mathematical sciences, with a focus on significant developments in mathematics that have influenced the discipline, and the lifetime accomplishments of significant scholars. Talks will take place throughout the semester. All talks will take place virtually.
Speaker: Ciprian Manolescu (Stanford)
Title: Four-dimensional topology
Abstract: I will outline the history of four-dimensional topology. Some major events were the work of Donaldson and Freedman from 1982, and the introduction of the Seiberg-Witten equations in 1994. I will discuss these, and then move on to what has been done in the last 20 years, when the focus shifted to four-manifolds with boundary and cobordisms. Floer homology has led t...

Shorter development time of systems with variable topology
In this demo, we show how to develop a dynamic controller for switching/variable parts of a pneumatic system. By installing our more efficient controller, we see a drastic reduction in the design and development time of the control system. Moreover, fewer system experiments are required thanks to the efficient and adaptive system modelling and controller architecture.

Topology: The Shapes of Space and the Spaces of Shapes
Mathematics is patterns and logic, imagination and rigor. It is a way of seeing and a way of thinking. Math Mornings is a series of public lectures aimed at bringing the joy and variety of mathematics to students and their families. Speakers from Yale and elsewhere will talk about aspects of mathematics that they find fascinating or useful. The talks will usually be accessible to students from 7th grade and up, although occasionally some familiarity with high-school subjects will be helpful.
Math Mornings lectures will occur on three Sundays each semester at Yale University. The inaugural lecture for the series was given by Yale Mathematics Professor Yair Minsky on November 4, 2012 who spoke "Topology: The Shapes of Space and the Spaces of Shapes."

JMR Development of Topology Optimized Bending Twisting Soft Finger
(ASME) J. Mechanisms Robotics
Title: Development of Topology Optimized Bending-Twisting Soft Finger
Authors: Zhili Chen, Hamed Rahimi Nohooji, Chee-Meng Chew
Department of Mechanical Engineering, National University of Singapore, Singapore
Abstract: This paper proposed a systematic framework to automatically design and fabricate optimized soft robotic fingers. The soft finger is composed of a soft silicone structure with inner air chambers and a harder outer layer, which are fabricated by molding process and 3D printing, respectively. The softer layer is utilized for actuation while the supportive hard structure is used to impose constraints. The framework applies a topology optimization approach based on RAMP method to obtain an optimal design of the outer layer of the soft fi...

Floer homology has led to numerous applications, and recently there have also been a few novel results (and proofs of old results) using Khovanov homology. The talk will be accessible to a general mathematical audience.

Please see www.yale.edu/scienceoutreach for further information about Math Mornings and for a list of free Yale STEM outreach programming and events.

The framework applies a topology optimization approach based on RAMP method to obtain an optimal design of the outer layer of the soft fingers. Two basic motion primitives (bending and twisting) of the soft finger were explored. A multi-segmented soft bending finger and a soft twisting finger were designed and fabricated through the proposed framework. This work also explored the combination of bending and twisting primitives by developing a combined bending-twisting soft finger. The soft fingers were characterized by free and blocked movement tests. The experiments showed that the triple-segmented soft finger can achieve a maximum of 50.5◦ no-load bending under the actuation pressure of 53 kPa. The blocked movement test on the multi-segmented soft actuating finger showed that this finger could generate up to a maximum of 0.63 N force under 57 kPa actuation pressure in 7 seconds of inflating time. The developed twisting soft finger was shown to achieve tip rotation of up to 219 degrees under 29 kPa actuation pressure. Finally, the potential capability of the bending-twisting soft fingers was verified through applications like screwing and object grasping.
